  1. While at my favorite Taget store the other day I noticed a line of metal picnicware that was had a compass design on it. I, of course, snatched some up for that all important geocaching get together we all plan. They have plates and bowels of various sizes. It is very attractive and fits in well to a geocaching picnic or outting. HAPPY CACHING!!!

  3. Easy enough - just hop in a car with a friend who has radar with your Garmin V and you will soon have the answer. The Garmin V is *very* accurate - pretty understood that speedometers are off varying amounts (can take them to a shop and get them calibrated but normally no need to). The GPS was right on with the moving radar - kinda cool too. HAPPY CACHING!!!

  5. A test call to 911? I can only speak for our area but I think making "test" calls to Comm Centers that are already overburdened not a good idea in addition to a trivial (and possibly unlawfu) use of the service. Get a cell phone with a minimal plan - an FRS radio - or alternative device. I think making "test" calls to 911 should not be advised - not stepping on toes here - just my thought. On the topic of alternatives to 911, Florida has *FHP throughout the State for reporting Drunk Drivers, traffic obstructions and such. I know other States have similar toll-free, no charge cell services - in the case of Florida the call is routed to the Troop that is closest to the caller (by site). HAPPY & SAFE CACHING.

  7. Canada - because of the position of the Detroit Aiport if a plane left and flew directly South - the first Country (other than the USA) it entered would be Canada. Next?

  11. Not knowing where else to turn and having seen so many helpful responses I thought I would ask here for some assistance. I have a colleague in Seminole County (FL) who has a policy that they can not take their issued (Sheriff's Office) car more than fifteen miles beyond the County line. Is there a way - or can you send me a map - with a fifteen mile border around Seminole County, FL. I tried to do this with my mapping stuff - but am not that technically astute - still trying to figure out my Garmin V. Any help is appreciated - to NetDep@aol.com. In advance - THANKS & HAPPY CACHING!!!!

  13. I recently completed a flight from Orlando -> Seattle and back again within a week. I like to travel light so I took only two carry ons (Continental - my personal fav). I had a duffle and a daypack. I carried: my Garmin V, two FRS radios, a digital camera with tripod/disks, my Palm m505, Nokia phone and several chargers, cables and assorted "gadgets". All of my "toys" were in my daypack and it made it through the x-ray both ways with never a question. It was stopped and looked at but it did seem the screeners were professional and quite good at what they did. On the plane - having read the appropriate sites/threads on the topic - I CHOSE not to ask (better to beg forgiveness and all that) but just whipped out my Garmin (reserved window seats for this very purpose) and watched the speed climb. I did not make a spectacle out of anything and only one person asked me about it and I just replied - it is a GPS - no further comment and no further questions. I really enjoyed watching it for a bit. Actually - I get more questions about my Palm Pilot than my GPS. Caching is a different issue - people are very curious. As far as the plane - there was no problem with security - and onboard there was no problem (for me). Now if ANYONE had asked me to put it away or made further inquiry I would have done just that - put it away. I was not flying the plane - so my GPS was out for "fun." If that helps great - common sense and courtesy - just like the rest of geocaching I had a great trip and managed to put Travel Dawg in a cache that has since moved so he is on his way as well!! If you travel have a safe trip and HAPPY CACHING

  15. I like game. We take our toys out and find the "treasure" to trade then come back to our keyboards and brag about how brave we were. Our competition? Ourselves. I also like game because, and this may just apply to me, I need more fun in my life - I needed to "lighten up" and this game has helped that. Not to mention the enjoyment I get out of reading the posts and visiting with the very nice people that are geocachers. So - for me - it is a game.

  17. Although I have only one travel bug (Travel Dawg) I think having the copy on my key ring is neat. I like the idea that when I place my own cache (soon) I will put a couple of TB's in it and have those copies as well. I vote for keeping - they are inexpensive now - can't think of much else that is as inexpensive as this hobby, compared to other outdoor hobbies...HAPPY CACHING

  19. Just a short (famous last words) comment here. Just got done reading Jeremy's "rules" and they seem extremely fair. This is, after all, a game/sport/hobby. It seems that from a couple of postings above on the "clarification" of commercial caches - we would need Mr. Seneca (Attorney at Law) to unwind all of them. Know what? The approvers made a judgement - let it be - seems a lot of time was taken to object (pun) to something that will not be overruled (really killing myself here). Yes, I am new and my opinion matters little - but let's keep it light & fun - and not take ourselves too serious - that is the fun of this: it still is - fun. (And Mr. Seneca - did you recently start adding the tag line about your sig being a joke??? Was someone offended?? Is there no end???) HAPPY CACHING!!!

  21. Yes, willing to travel from Orlando to Portland for such an event...would give me a reason to be back to the beautiful Pacific NW...BRING IT ON!!!
  22. Since we are all touting our Garmin V's here I thought I might chime in!! Trust me on this - I am NO gadget wonderkid and even I have figured out some of the Garmin V. On a recent vacation to Seattle (from Orlando) I put in the lon/lat of a cache I wanted to visit that was near where I was staying. With my friend driving (who knew the area) the Garmin V took us right to the park (in a route he would have driven) and then I switched to "off road" mode and found the cache. So, you can enter waypoints (in either of the above fashions) and it does work GREAT - I really enjoy this...and one of the reasons, I think, is the ease and sophistication of the Garmin V.

  24. m315 has a great idea and I can also say that getting the videos is a good idea. I got a Garmin V and got both the Garmin video and another that was done more for boaters but still had good info in it. If you had to choo se, based on my experience, I would say get the one done by the maker - seemed better done and more comprehensive and also a little more professional...and enjoy - it does get under your skin pretty QUICK!!!
