  1. post to floridacaching.com that is our state web site and I am sure you will get some help.
  2. another idea I have kicked around for some time and doesn't technically deface property is to use concrete sealer. it goes on clear and remains invisible till till it has gotten wet. you could stencil coords or symbols then cachers would have to wet the area for the hidden numbers to be revealed. I have not tried this yet but in theory I think it would work.
  3. add me in as well would love one for the back of the jeep.
  4. I am a local live right here in Palatka, have found this cache and may others in the area as well as hid many in the area. I know the cache owner personally and would love to talk to you with any concerns you may have about this cache or other land management issues you may have in this area. As the president of the local caching organization we are actively working with a number of land management groups and individuals so we would to like talk to you about your experience. I will pm you my number so we can talk. The Federation President Northeast Florida Geocachers Assoc.
  5. Poker runs we have done in the past have been handled in a variety of ways. I have seen it done with multiple decks of cards in the caches and out. I have seen it done with one deck and chips and a hand is dealt based upon the number of chips revovered up to 7 with 5 cards playable. I have also seen 2 or 3 bonus caches set up where there are extra cards available. The problem being for cachers is they don't know if the bonus cards have been picked up or not. The last time we held a poker run we set up 2 parallel trails on oppostie ends of a park and then the teams had to split. half the team went on one trail and the other went on the other trail. It then became a multi-cache type hunt one team found their cache and called their counter part to move them to their next cache and so forth. Each team started on a different cache and there there was little chance of all the teams being jammed up at one cache. There were 10 total caches but each tema only had cards in 5 of the caches. We set up two bonus caches in extreme areas for the teams and they had to choose if they wanted to go after them for the bonus cards.
  6. Since it is a boring and rainy day today I thought I would sit and read 6 pages of the same arguments again about the logging practices of others. Now first off I would like to state that I agree with Criminal and others that logging an event multiple times is wrong. Secondly I would like to state that I agree with the other side that how people log their caches should be up to them. What I think we miss through all of this argument because we get caught up in the whole numbers aspect or the liars aspect is who sets the standards by which we play the game. If you all would indulge me for a minute here I would like to make my observation on this. I believe there are 2 conflicting chains of thought at work. Criminal's and other's view I believe is that there is a Global Community Standard of how the game should be played. In that view everyone should follow the same standard as established by the Geocaching community as a whole. Finds should be 1 event 1 log, 1 cache 1 log ect. In this view things are quite cut and dried. ( Criminal if that is not your opinion I apologize.) On the other hand this is my opinion there is a Local Community Standard evolving in the sport. The sport is becoming a decentralized community. In this Standard each local community establishes the standards by which they play the game, for example pocket caches maybe acceptable here but not in other places, logging events multiple times maybe acceptable there but not here. The essence of this system is that when people compare themselves to others they understand the values and norms of that community and can judge accordingly. Under this Standard we still follow the basic tenets of caching but the periphery of how the game is played is varied to meet the needs of the local community. I think at one time the Global Community Standard was the norm of Geocaching and was wholly acceptable as a standard but with the evolution of the game it is simply not feasible for the Caching community to try and hold to that standard any longer. As each community takes on it's own unique styles of caches and preferences the game will morph to that paticular communities standards and needs. I don't believe that we can judge others and how they play the game using a Global Standard any longer because the game has evolved beyond that point. When we try to continue using that standard many cachers will come up short simply because we don't see that standard as being relevant any longer. As each community has grown to meet the needs of their local community by hiding the types of caches that community prefers so should the other standards of game be based upon the desires of the local community. I think if we all could move to this decentralized view of the game we don't lessen the game itself we merely come to understand that each community sets it own norms. GC.Com continues as a listing service and the game is defined at the local level thereby meeting what each of us needs to be an active supportive member of the game.
  7. Just an update to the thread OBJets and LJ &Co have gone to Brazil in search of the Ape Cache this week. They promised to pick up that Gold Federation coin for me Joe. I hope to hear from them soon how the trip went.

  9. Even though it is not posted as an event our local organization that Clan Baron belongs to as well has been donating to Toys for Tots and other organizations for 5 years now . We conduct the drive through our web site and forums. Each year has gotten bigger and better. Last year we brought a pick up truck full of toys to a local charity.
  10. The OP works fro the assumption that all cache placemnts are permanent therefore we need to relax the min distance guideline. I disagree what we need to do as cache hiders is continually evaluate our hides and as they get older we should archive and allow for new placemtns in the area. Will a conituned saturation decrease the quality of caches I don't think so we will just have to find better ways to maintain those caches we have placed.
  11. I deleted my post above from my Reviwer account to post under my User account I din't want there to be any confusion on who was commenting. Hey Geoholic28 I just wanted to say thanks for your opinion and standing by Jax. Most of the cachers from the area admantly refuse to surf these forums for the exact nature of this thread. I don't know the OP or the situation he speaks of but it is the generaliztion that people tend to use that really bothers not only myself but other cachers from Jax as well as other areas. We have people come to Jacksonvile they hunt 20 or 30 caches by selecting 1&1 caches they don't do any pre-planing, they contact none ofn the locals or even bother to look at our Group boards. Then out of the 1000's of caches available they from an opinion on every cache in Jacksonville. The bigger issue is that they totally fail to take into account that caches are hid by the wants and needs of the local community. I keep hearing Sex Shops and Strip Clubs yet these people have no idea behind the reason for these hides they simply rush to judgemnt about 1% of the caches be indicative of the of the whole. I apologize for taking this thread off topic but I just thought maybe it was about time a Jax cacher got a word in when we get referenced so much. Again thanks to GeoHolic28, The Horse Geeks and all the other cachers who visit Jax give us the oppurtunity to meet you all and spend a little time with you and get to show you what we really have to offer here.
  12. Not sure if this is the same issue or not but this is what happened with me and the new 60cx. Ihave used GSAK and Magellan for years with no issues. Once I got a new 60cx anytime I try to turn GSAK on with Garmin Gstart on GSAK goes haywire all kinds of error messagaes and eventaully have to reboot to satop. So now I turn off Garmain Gstart, do my filter in GSAK export a mapsource file close GSAK open Mapsorce imprt the file and all is well. I hope that helps.
  13. n29 53.914 w081 18.837 here are the coords for the Zero Mile Marker in St Augustine , Pars they are about 20 feet off since I could get exactly up to the stone but it shopuld be close enough. The Fed
  14. 1 Gold 1 silver found my Ape Cache The Maryland Cache with a group of cachers from Florida on a 36 hour marathon trip to DC and Maryland.
  15. I have used the wite and the orane firetacks and I prefer the orange. The white can still be seen in the day if the trail is well traveled. The orange tends to blend better. I actually had a cacher find one of my night caches using a huge, ridiculous flashlight in the daytime. I like the discussions on the leds I have been kicking these ideas around for a few years now. I have some areas in The Ocala National Forest where people will never go without caching so I hope to follow this discussion further.
  16. I had a cache hid about 3 feet from the old location on on Ft Marion Circle. Yes they have moved it due to the construction of the new high rise parking garage. I know exactly where it is at the visitor center I will be working over the weekend in St Aug and swing by there and hide a new cache. I mean get you a new set of coords. I have often wanted to find someone on your end to try and set a similar cache and do a twin cities kind of thig. If you are interested let me know if nothing else I will get the coords for you. The Original cache was A not so tourist view#?. It is to be featured in a upcoming book on geocaching.
  17. I have done 2 cave caches and both were enjoyable. I know of one other cacve cache that is up to the challenge that you put forth and each has is it's own merits and challenges. I agree with IK from previous threads I know the cave people are quite protective of caves. Not being up on the safety issues involved I think her advice is right on point. My one concern from you post is the fact that rare plants are present. If this is the case and these caves are on land regulated by some management agency I am sure you would be hard pressed to get permission which in this case seems imperative. Good luck with the placement if the obstacles can be worked out I would hunt it.
  18. Well mine is a Success Story in the making hopefully. I ordered somthing from Amazon on their super saver shipping for my wife on the 19 expected ship date was Jan 15th. I was fine with that for the holiday and late ordering and all no problem. I checked a few days later to see the item shipped Dec 21st almost a month ahead of projected ship date my expected delivery date is still showing Jan 22 but the item is sitting at the UPS delivery destination and I should recieve it Monday or Tuesday. If it gets's here then that will be some fine service.
  19. if not an electronic compass doe it have the same compass the meridans have? I assume it is a magnetic compass? or simply a compass screen that moves when you are moving vs an electronic that gives direction either way.
  20. I don't see on the specs anywhere does the xl have a compass with it? I don't want to derail the thread and make this a should have or not thread it is just a must for me when caching.
  21. Well it appears that since Lady Cacher was so good this year that I wasn't all that bad either since I recieved a similiar envelope in my mailbox too. Thanks Santa I really appreciate the cool coin and I will do as instructed and return to my childlike faith in you. The Federation

  24. I have the following coins available for trades: 1 Maryland unactivated 2 Washington 2005 1 Santa Cruz Geocachers 1 SilverMarc 1 DFW Bronze I am looking for older or unusal coins or personal coins I don't already have. If you need one of these coins send me a link to your coin list and I will see what you have I can use or make me an offer.
  25. The Federation coins were done by The Caching Place. My personal feeling was excellent service and excellent qualtiy. They are not the cheapest but they were by far the most customer focused of any of the coin manafacturers I talked to. Since their site is now online the additional services they offer more than balances the difference in price.
