  1. I am returning to the world of geocaching, but find that using a cell phone to do this is so different from my caching past. is there anyone that would like to mentor me in the ways of using the new technology? Particularly, does any one have info on using my US android when out of the US? I would like to do my downloads and such when on WiFi and not have to pay the verizon extortion fees.
  2. It would be nice to have an "almost" wheelchair accessable button for those caches where the hike in is accessable to chairs, but the grag would require standing or maybe less than 20 steps. Many folks in chairs have some mobility, but need the chair for distance. Or group caching where one member is in a chair.
  3. As the setter of the deLorme Challenge, I have started seeing immitators, and variations on the theme, and I am flattered and over joied to see them. With the rise of so many lampost caches, and "in the bushes at my work" caches that I really could do without, I would like to propose a new cache type that would perk our creativity: Compilation Caches. The guidelines for Compilation Caches would requirement finding and signing a series of physical cachesit would require finding of at least 50 of a certain type of caches (on every page of a certain deLorme map, or all the counties of a state, or all 50 states, or one on each continent)...(ok maybe one on each contenent that does not contain the south pole). I would hope that the requirements would aim at about a year's effort to achieve by any normal human. (OK so we are not normal, and possibly the word human might not apply at times.)
  4. When I travel, I try to contact a local cacher to clue me in on the great caches. When I am working, or worse dealing with family, getting out to do one or two caches is how I reward myself. I get really miffed when I find that I have just wasted my precious one or two caches looking for lamp posts at Wally World. Now I can ask cachers if they have an "out of towner" list. I am using the list to put together caches that are in English for an upcoming trip to the Netherlands. Now I have a convienient place to put the notes that come to me from local cachers. Thanks Jeremy
  5. I am taking my mother to visit her mother. We fly into Austin Drive to Waco and I get to make a side trip to Katy (oh joy) Mom isn't very mobile, so trips have to be short enought for me to do in 45 minutes or so, or for her to get to. I would rather n ot waste time with the walmart/grab and go caches But I really would like to find some fun finds. (I need to do some caching to keep my sanity) Any suggestions, about caching that is, my sanity is hopeless
  6. yep, I'll be there with the petaluma navy, and austin the cache hound
  7. Yep, you are expecting way too much accuracy and speed. I call it the Garmin dance..although it is a phenomana experianced by all brands. When you get close, ignore the arrow. Watch the distance, and walk slow. Or set the unit down for a minute while you do some of the back and forth looking. Think like a cacher. And remember that the cache placer will probably have experianced the same amount of variation. And sometimes the reading is just plain wrong!
  8. I am now ready to start thinking about replacing my Etrex Legend after the recent flambe incident. I had borrowed a magellen sport trak. I found the screen a bit clunky. I will be using a Magellan GPS315 for a while, and I think it will be even more rudimentary. I liked the Legend, in fact it was my second one (the first having been stolen) But found the support to be a bit lacking (understatement there, I could never get past the 'did you download the new software" autmatic reply) AND I think my aging eyes need something a bit larger. On the other hand, I do have the map set for it, and I know how it works. (as in better the devil you know) and it did fit nicely in my pocket I have a lovely pocket pc, and was wondering about the GPS units that plug into them. So I guess what I am asking is what do you like, and not like, about specific units that are on the market today?
  9. Actually I was on a caching/work trip. I am a vendor at small Renn. Faires. I had just done a lovely new show in jackson (promotor is a cacher in the Sacto area.) One member of the Petaluma Navy was with me and we had a whole bunch of your Sacto caches planned for our day off. All of my wares (ie my entire business) and all of my caching supplies, and my DELORMA MAP were in the van. The van was found torched, but the garmin, and the map were missing. I am really stressing about how to verify the finders for the Delorme Chalenge. This isn't the best place to post the idtifying stuff about the GPS, but if it is found it can be identified. And I have never seen a GPS at a flea market. So look for bad guys , dressed in well laced up bodices , that know right where they are . And my thanks to those of you that have offered your kind encouragement to me. I hope to get out there on the 14th.
  10. I need a favor from those of you in the Sacto area. My Garmin Legend may show up in a local pawn shop or flea market. If you see it please call the cops. It was taken from my van just before they torched it. (Giving "hot car" a whole new dimention.) Thanks ever so much.
  11. Leapin Tiger starts right there. A beautiful hike past a waterfall, and you can see all the way to the Faralons. It has a great vertical componant, but the trail is well maintained.
  12. Do you really need a "why?" We all cache because we are addicts.
  13. The Petaluma Navy is not doing much caching because their Captian has started work 2 hours from home. He is looking for a room to rent for 2 or 3 nights a week. Let me know if you have any suggestions.
  14. Having put good stuff, and soso stuff in my caches, I would like to point out that the point is the hunt, not the booty. What is good, and what is junk is really in the eye of the beholder. A McToy to you might be a McTreasure to a kid. My favorite stuff to find are the hand made trinkets like beautiful knot left in a cache in the Sacramento area, or "objects 'd cache" like Skrwl's pins. As to other folks caches, I always try to trade up, always leave it better than I found it. Often I will TNLN for a couple of caches, then leave something really good in the third cache. Yes some people are jerks. But the choice on how to deal with them is yours. I suggest that you just keep making fun caches, and others will follow your lead
  15. This should be added to the Darwins: SF cron yesterday had a small article about some streakers in Ohio (?) that did the Dennies "buffette". THey returned to the get away car, to find it had been stolen.
  16. AAA makes the best (and free to members) maps of the old fationed paper kind. Your local host can get them for you (or drop me a line with a US snail mail address and I will mail you some)
  17. <c>Some time is for prose<br> Some time is consumed by rhyme<br> Haiku for caching</c>

  19. I have been to two delightful library caches. I set two in libraries, but they dissapeared suddenly on the same day.
  20. I have really been enjoying locationless caches lately, and have been wondering if there were ever going to be new ones. It seems that there are two problems with them: Too Specific (stuff only in Finland), OR Too broad (yellow jeeps). And there are too many OKed. Here is my suggestion: allow only 2 new locationless caches a month (one US, one international) to be selected by a group of approvers. Haicoole
  21. After having slept on it, and looked at the new format on a slightly better screen, it looks a bit better. Here is a thought: the old version must be archived somewhere, how about putting a link for those of us that are hard to retrain. Haicoole
  22. Add me to the list of "Need a better way to seperate out Not found from Found & Hidden caches" I use old computers, and the subtleties make the list almost unusable. Haicoole
  23. On one hand, I really appreciate the volunteers of any kind, especially those that put in the efforts to keep our little game going. But today I was contacted by an admin about why a virtual cache I have is temporarily disabled (a valid question). But it seems that this admin has only 4 finds...but on his/her profile openly states that the account is only being used as an alias. This just seems a bit secretive. Haicoole
  24. Unfortunatly, the deductable on my insurance about equals my loss...sigh. And my appologies to the referance, granddad! Haicoole
  25. Gee, public transit has really improved over there...Do I flag it down, or does it stop at every bus stop? Haicoole
