  1. Cool thanks. I had never see one but figured if possible someone would have done it.
  2. or vice versa. I am always thinking of unique and different ideas. Any idea if you could somehow combine them. I have not thought out all the logistics but publish an unknown that is solvable in the field AND make it part of a multicache. Just thinking outside of the geocaching box
  3. I hope you realize that geomate jr. units were downgraded to junk status when the original corporate owners abandoned it. A new corporate entity recently bought it from them. They have not yet proven to me that they will return the geomate to it's original functionality. Some users have indicated loading a much smaller PQ data set to them for their kids to use. I guess they figure if it gets destroyed there was no value lost. No harm done. At the moment I would hold off trading anything of real value for one. If you were aware of the shortcomings and still want one, Good Luck in your quest. In case anyone is interested I successfully loaded the Mid USA cache list yesterday. I think that their website may be back in action.
  4. We have some top notch reviewers in my area. Usually never longer than 4 hours. Under 30 minutes is not unheard of and if you catch them when they are online I have seen under 10 minutes. Every once once in a while they take a day off. If it takes longer than I day I get antsy that i did something wrong like like forget to activate lol
  5. Some people don't care about trade items or trackables and see no value in hiding a container larger than required for the log. Some people prefer inexpensive/free containers, and don't want to pay for an ammo box, a Lock & Lock container, etc. But even if you can hide a larger container, that doesn't mean that a larger container will survive as a geocache. Those who find a larger container may draw unwanted attention to it, and the next thing you know, it has been stolen or vandalized. I've seen the same pattern happen repeatedly around here: A location hosts a series of caches placed by various owners, until someone hides a micro-cache (or even a puzzle micro-cache). The smaller caches survive, so that's what ends up dominating in busy locations. niraD, I could not have said it better. Thanks for your input!!
  6. Most of the time when I am purchasing containers I like to have 50-100. I am not talking about really needing 1000+ of these but if you can get 500 for the price of 10 with the right sourcing why not . A number of my caches are downtown Portland, OR. I try to hide them in really cool spots like old phone booths or near interesting landmarks in downtown Portland and enjoy immensely all the logs.... many from visiting out of town folks. There is a strong muggle population and I swear the homeless love to nab these things out of boredom. I would say that of my 109 geocaches (104 active) I am probably replacing 5-6 caches per month due just to muggles. If you placed them in better spots, you would only need to replace 1-2 a month. Either way, I'm glad I don't live in your area! I always place them perfectly it is those that come after me that may not do such a great job. Lol. Urban geocaching is quite a different animal compared to the other subset of my caches which are suburban hides.
  7. Take a trip up north. When I have more time this summer I want to make a trip south. If you ever get stuck on any of my caches I am always happy to help just drop me a PM. Also I have a number of "?" caches that you could work on solving then pick up he final location next time you came through town.
  8. You might try to contact to cache owner that is blocking your potential spot. Granted that they in no way are obligated to help out but it never hurts to ask Anyone that is brave enough or crazy enough to put an ammo can in downtown Portland just contact me and I will happily archive any of my caches that are blocking the spot.
  9. I agree that may be a useful feature. I personally would probably not use it as I am trying to make geocaching friends and most days and up for any cache anywhere by anyone. I LOVE meeting fellow cachers at GZ on FTF runs and just randomly when searching for a cache.

  11. There are so many different scientific container types put there it can make your head swim. If anyone has a link to the best company with the most geofriendly containers please pass it on.
  12. http://www.ebay.com/itm/20-Micro-Geocache-Cache-Containers-Nano-Geocaching-Bison-Tubes-w-Logs-/260952781991?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3cc1ff74a7#ht_2024wt_956 Do you thing this is what the person in your are has? I have hidden these in phone booths etc. they really work great. If you paint them they are virtually invisible.
  13. Lots of helpful information. Good to know what works and what does not work. I have been pretty happy for the really tricky hides with 1.5ml DNA tubes. They are super evil when placed in tree bark Thanks for the dog tag idea.

  15. I see a really cool container on ebay. I would like some help finding a commercial source of these containers. I am not planning on competing with the ebay seller but I just want to buy a whole bunch for cheap. Would it be ok to post a picture of the cache container here and ask for help finding it?
  16. Thanks for all the replies. Some really good ideas. I will think about the puzzle idea. I have never seen such a multi. I think it would be fun.....and challenging. Nice to also hear the official rules about publishing a cache based on a specific group of caches etc.
  17. I am right at 100 hides. I was wondering if anyone out there has any ideas or cool things that they have seen other geocachers do to celebrate reaching this milestone? I was thinking about doing and unknown "?" cache and have the requirements be that you needed to find X number of my caches. I am trying to figure out if that would make me seem like I am stuck on myself of if people would think it is cool. eg 5 ? caches and 25 traditional caches to qualify for the 5 difficulty 5 terrain "100th hide special" Any thoughts would be appreciated.
  18. I find that really nice unique polished rocks make excellent swag. They are virtually indestructible waterproof and amazingly beautiful....always. You can find lots of grab bag for a few bucks a any local rock show. My son is really into rocks so I guess I am biased but they are IMO on of the best swags around.
  19. I guess rocks are hard for a reason. ie they don't like to have holes drilled in them. Thank you all for the input. I will consider my options and decide how to proceed. I was thinking it would be cool to attach a cool polished rock to a travel bug for instance. Also as I mentioned earlier I have a cache idea but the whole drilling a hole in a rock seems to be harder than I expected. Thanks again. I will let you know how it turns out.
  20. Not a big rock or a big hole but I would like to drill a hole in a rock for a cache idea I have. The rock will be pretty small think 2" across and maybe 1/2" thick. I already tried a concrete bit but it just smoked and made very little progress. The rock will be your standard find it in the parking lot rock. The hole will be 1/16" hole.
  21. Looks like I am last to the party Probably someone out there will benefit from this info. I am a pretty tech savy guy and I only just now found and decided to poke around that file and see what up with it.
  22. If this is common knowledge I appologize BUT I just figure out a neat trick that I though I would share. Garmin Oregon 450 (May apply to other newer Garmin Units) 1. Plug in computer 2. Navigate to the drive that the computer assigns for the Garmin 3. Navigate to the folder "Garmin" 4. Look for the file "startup.txt" You can then proceed to edit this little txt file to display whatever you want on startup and assign the time that is displays. I set mine to put my name and phone number and email in case I ever lose the GPS. If you do dot have this file it should be pretty easy to create using Notepad or other similar program. Here is the text in the file (copy everything except the "'s: "<!-- Edit this file to display a message while your unit is powering on --> <!-- Allow one full power cycle after editing for your message to be updated --> <!-- Set the display number to the minimum number of seconds your message is displayed --> <display =0> <!-- Type your message on the next line -->"
  23. The reason why I ask is that I have placed about 20+ caches. A handful are close to my house. Every time I turn on my GPS to find Geocaches mine are listed and I would like them to not show up on this screen of caches I have not found. Thanks CanadianRockies for the pointers. I wonder if choose the ignore function if it will disable notifications that people have found the caches?
  24. I was wondering what others do so that all of the geocaches you place do not show up as unfound. It is ok to "find" your own geocaches so that they get logged and therefore disappear as caches you need to find? TIA
