  1. Lowes or Home Depot has a variety of PVC pipe pieces that you can use to make your own containers. Just buy a straight piece with threads on both ends, two caps, et viola: a cheap yet durable container.
  2. The biggest problem I've had with caching with others is that they don't have as much stamina when it comes to hunting. They will give up quickly if they can't immediately find the cache, and tire of going to other sites. So I usually just go caching with my dog. She never complains and always sniffs out the hard to find caches! So my recommendation: get a dog
  3. You can just copy the coords from the webpage and then paste into the search box on the google maps app. Use the http://wap.geocaching.com site to search by ZIP code and then copy the coords. But seriously if you have the iPhone, you should get the app. $10 is not much considering you spent $200 on the iPhone. Heck, you probably spent more on lunch I have had the app for more than a year now and I can assure you it is WELL worth the price of admission. But if you are still on the fence, you should check out the free geoaching.com app.
  4. I don't know if this will work on your phone, but Google maps allows for the input of coordinates in the search box. So just copy the coords, e.g. N 36° 02.107 W 115° 00.280, and paste into Google maps. This should drop a pin on the location. You can use the text only website http://wap.geocaching.com to search by ZIP code and easily get these coords. Good luck!
  5. Yes the numbers I gave were just the reference numbers. I didn't want any false logs posted Anyway, I emailed the owners of both tags, and it appears the tags were somehow switched at a geocaching meet up. Very strange! The owner is going to mail the duplicate tag so I can replace the incorrect one. Thanks for the responses!
  6. I picked up this travel bug today: TB2T2RB Missy Moo's Nutty But Nice TB. But when I enter the trackable number from Missy Moo's tag, it takes me to TB3F44C Bob's got the bug to travel. Any ideas? I've already ruled out the tags getting switched because the one I picked up today (Missy Moo's) was dropped just a couple days ago, while Bob's was last dropped back in July in a completely different cache. Also Bob's has never been to the cache where I picked up Missy Moo's. Very strange. The worst part is, I can't "remove" Missy Moo's from the cache listing in which I found it AND I can't rehide it!
  7. You could always stick to the one star difficulty or urban caches. Those are usually pretty straightforward. Also, if you are relatively new to caching, it will take awhile to hone your "geosenses." See if you can find others in your area that are more seasoned; they may be able to teach you a thing or two. The best advice is to stick with it! Sometimes finding that tough cache is the best reward. If you can't find it after half an hour, add it to your did not find list and come back later. Sometimes a fresh perspective is all you need.
  8. 9. Many new caches are hidden. Geocaching is coming up on it's 1,000,000th hide, and I think it may happen before spring!
  9. Our first two finds were micros. Tiny tiny micros. They were magnetic glycerin pill containers big enough for one pill (or one tightly wound log). We were a little disappointed. "Is this what geocaching is about?" But now that we are a little more experienced, we enjoy finding all sizes.
  10. We just placed our first cache recently. We took three diffrent readings at different times of the day. Then we plugged those coords into Google Earth to see where it would place the marks. We picked the mark closest to our actual cache. So far, no one has posted a DNF (did not find) so it must have worked!
  11. The bottom is sealed with a custom made rubber o-ring, fitted between the twisting part and the container itself. It makes it a little harder to turn, but it still works.
  12. My wife wants to be a pirate, so she loves finding hidden treasure. Me, well Im a man so I have to hunt. Its primal.
  13. This may sound crude, but I use packing tape on my PDA, my Nintendo DS (it has a touch screen), my cell phone and my GPSr. I got the idea from Popular Science. Super cheap and they work great too! The only problem is when you remove them, they leave lots of sticky residue But its easily removed with Goo Gone. One of the Texas Vikings - What dollar store do you get your screen protectors from?
  14. Our Labra-Beagle, Leila, on the way to a cache. With her friend, Farfel, digging for a cache.
  15. I know Ill get laughed at when I post this: Its my wife's 2001 Chevy Tracker. We also have a 1999 Jeep Cheerokee, but the Tracker is 4WD, so we use it.
  16. Entering them directly into the search box at Google Maps will convert them too. I use this to convert the coords on Geocaching.com for my Lowrance.
  17. Thanks for the link to the brochures, bad andy. Zack Jones, you may want to bring a 6 D-Cell Maglite. Doubles as a light source and a weapon.
  18. How about this homemade GPS (from hackaday.com): Click for a larger view Click for a larger view Full link on how he made it:http://www.mhd.miun.se/~stok/ghetto-gps/ Can you imagine trying to cache with this? Amazing it could be made though.
  19. Okay here is one I just completed. Its an old Chap-Stic container covered in electrical tape. There is a flap on the lid that overlaps the tube in an effort to keep out moisture. The bottom is twisted and the log rises, just like the Chap-Stic used to. There is a pencil nib super-glued to the top of the screw in the center of the tube. So the container doubles as a pen!
  20. I have a BW Palm Zire M150. Not very powerful at all, only 2MB of storage. I got it for a gift a few years ago and never had a use for it. Then I started Geocaching. It works great for that end and can hold a lot of waypoint data, even with its limited memory. So if you want the PDA for purely Geocaching, I dont think you need one with all the bells and whistles.
  21. Id like to know how your hunt went. It was my wife's, our dog's and my first hunt this weekend too. We found 5/8. Not bad, eh? It was a great time. Hope your hunt went well too!
