  1. I'm sorry but I strong;y disagree that a gun is my best defense. BS pure and simple. My DOG is my best defense. Trust me come at me in a threatening manner and while my dog is trying to rip out your throat I am hightailing it as far away from you as possible. Approach me nicely and while my dog will tolerate you and even lick your hand lay a hand on me and he'll get you while I am breaking away from your grip and hightailing it out there. I don't have to wait for you to get close enough to ensure I shot you dead cuz my dog did it for me. He's got sharp white teeth and a growl that can chill you to the bone if prokoved. Heck he's scared me a few times when he has growled at other dogs. And just so you know he's not mean, in all the time we've had our Dobie he's growled at two people. One time was when me and my neighbor were walking our dogs at 0530 and a guy appeared out of nowhere with no dog on a 4 degree morning. And of all the times we had walked we'd never seen him before. Needless to say he went the other way from us. The other time was at my brother, who is a known drug user.
  2. This is an excellent point, you do want to have a cellphone to call 9-1-1 once you've stopped the attack via other means. However, the phone is itself not going to deter an attack. No creep bent on homicide or rape is going to wet his pants if you whip out a cellphone and call 9-1-1. I am reminded of the sad case of Dru Sjodin, who was abducted while talking on her cellphone, right out of a mall parking lot. Obviously phones do not deter creeps. You need something stronger. Dru was old enough to have legally carried a concealed handgun. Instead she carried a cellphone: She was never seen alive again. Dru Sjodin is a very sad case and I feel for her family but I wonder if she had been more aware of her sorroundings instead of the phone call she was on if this might have been prevented.
  3. Play dead ...play dead....... we are so less likely to attack!
  4. I walk around alot in the area and stand in areas to make it look like the cache might be there. I also pray for snow overnight.
  5. I cache alot by myself, and because of the time of the year, generally it is dark (raining and or snowing). If I can I take our Doberman with me. While he loves people a stranger won't know that and if provoked he couls be nasty.
  6. I am a current member of the United States Armed Forces. Been in almost 9 years now and am a SSG. There is a MSG and another SSG in my section who also geocache. In fact the MSG got both us SSG Started. My soldiers just got back from serving overseas, we were blessed that we had no injuries or losses. A Chemical Co turned into truck drivers.
  7. Thanks for the insight. I've been lucky so far that all the caches I have gone to have had something I liked, were interesting, etc.
  8. to be so hated? I've seen references that indicate (on the forums) that micros are strongly disliked. I've also seen notes posted on Caches to that effect? Being new to the game I enjoy them all. Am I missing something?
  9. MisterNixter and Rv'r if you get up to MN and want to place some caches I'd be willing to maintain for you as long as they are in the twin Cities area. Just let me know. My Bf and I are new to the sport and so are just beginning to think about cache placements and hides. We actually have one geocacher who has a nursery to assist in getting new caches placed. I've vistied the nursury but the storekeeper was not around tho we found a sapling we wanted to "purchase". http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...70-ebb37fce221c I have yet to do a King B's cache but btween him and Arcticabn, amoung others in my area I can't seem to keep up with the caches.

  11. Wouldn't history itself also be an example - one example being - way back when blacks and women were not seen as covered under The Constitution that was an interpertation to the docuement The is probably one of the most obvious example but there are many more.
  12. I should have said resonable. I think it is reasonable that the trash is out before we go out, the dishes are in the dishwasher and it is running, there is not a weeks worth of laundry piled up, the animals are cared for, etc. I do not feel the Honey do list must be finished or anything like that.
  13. We carry extra gloves, hats, scarves. Instead of a shovel we use gloved hands to brush snow aside and dig. I keep all my film in the fridge before use and after. Keeps it better.
  14. My future hubby and I have one night a week (sat nights) where we do our own thing, ie he goes out with the guys and I go geocaching. Then on Sat days we goecach together. My other geocaching time is spent before hubby gets home from work. Tell wife about health benies, try to get her involvd or set upa schedule that is acceptable and worked out between the two of you....communication is the key. I guess I'd also figure out what she thinks you are negelcting and make sure you keep on top of it. If it is time with the kids, take the kids. If it is chores make sure they are done before you go. If it is time with her set up a night that you and her spend together doing something she loves.
  15. Hugh Jazz I am one of those people who defend your right to freedom, as well as your right to speak freely, have your own religion, etc. and I have got to say that A)either you had a bad experience with LEO's you just like to be a devils advocate or C)??? As a citizen I am not giving up my rights if I or anyone cooperates with law enforcement or anyother agency. ATR great post!
  16. Why would anyone have one? I've seen this refrenced in the forums and am courious.
  17. I am one that will purposely leave decoy prints all over the plac. I also carry a bag so always have to clear a spot to set it down in while I hunt. Cachers after me would have a hard time finding the spot after me. I alsl have been known to put snow back over the cache so it is even less obvious.
  18. Found one the other day that would have been fine but it defiantly hasn't been maintained. It was a plastic bottle with a plastic cap. Must have been a food conatiner at one point becasue the animals had been at it. There was a large hole in the top, the plastic bag on the outside was ripped up. I was surprised the contents were closs to dry even with the snow we've had. Didn't have anything to rescue it with. Tried to email the ower but the email is no longer any good.
  19. I'm from MN and I find Geocaching the only reason to go out in this awful cold weather, tommorrow's high to be like 13. I have mittens (two sets in the bag), neck gaiter, heated socks, scarf, ear wraps, and hand warmers along with two shirts, combat boots and a military field jacket. That generally keeps me all toasty. Along with trips to the truck to warm up if close enough and needed. Cold not only keeps away the muggles but the snow can help in the hunt. follow the tracks boys. Unless you get evil one like me that walk around aimlessly after the find to put out confusing sets of tracks so not to ruin for the next cacher.
  20. Okay I have the States one, does anyone know of a Site that will let you pick 1 state and then log in the Counties you have visited (chaced in)?
  21. I used to work late long hours many times getting in before daylight and out after sunset, the only way to cache would have been weekends only or after dusk. I know I have looked for caches in closed areas before and posted about the hour I was out. I find there is an added challenge to the dark and/or rain.
