  1. Actually, in my area, Reviewers are known to pro-actively search using GSAK for caches that have problems and will temp-suspend and give a few weeks for the CO to sort or respond. I really like this system, especially as so many COs leave the game without tidying up after themselves. It all helps to promote a healthy and active hobby that gives a good impression, especially to new cachers.
  2. Try deleting the file (or moving it to your computer) and re-creating it. I don't know the etrex, but on other garmin devices, once you've connected your GPS to your computer, it's in \GARMIN\GPX Also check that the thing isn't full up - if it's recording tracks each time, and you never remove old cache GPX files, it may be out of space and that's preventing it creating the temporary files it needs to do to be able to load the caches.
  3. I encountered a bug like this today. I used a background image URL which had an & included (it's one from google photos). Everything appeared to work, until the final "Save and Preview" button. Click that and I was returned WITHOUT ERROR to the same page. It had saved all the info, but would not let me save. I cleared the background URL box and I was able to save and preview normally. I was also then able to edit the page and enter the same URL in the background image field without incident. I think your error checking needs a tweak, and some error reporting would be good too - as this could have been very frustrating. Win7x64, Chrome.
  4. I went from two 450 Oregons, which I loved but hated the touchscreen, to a 650 and interestingly, have had the reverse situation as you. Neither of the 450 Oregons ever crashed. The 650 does so very often. I've even returned it but its replacement does exactly the same. I spent a long time trying to not get it to crash, but now just keep half an eye and pull the batteries when it does. A shame as the 650's screen is lovely. Maybe the 600 is better, but I did see early adopters like me have similar issues. (As well as a lot of people who never have a problem) Both are well built, durable and completely water resistant.
  5. I recently did 25 sample pots with some old black bitumastic paint I found at the back of the garage. Dip them in, leave to dry. Worked great! Until cachers started reporting black fingers... I'd forgotten the stuff gets soft when it's warm, and takes ages to dry in anything other than the summer. Don't use bitumastic paint... (I generally use PVC tape, but I've got some cloth tape which I'll combine with PVA next time)
  6. The site is toxic, do not visit it. (Potential mobile targetted malware). It's simply spamming logs via fake accounts. Those accounts are being shut down by Groundspeak as they get identified. Just delete the logs. It's been brought up a few times here, Facebook and on Reddit already. http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=335151
  7. Yes the circles can overlap. The circle's radius is the 0.1 mile distance that caches should not (with some exceptions) be closer than and are likely to be rejected by the reviewers. Just keep the centre of the circle outside of any other circle's influence.
  8. Can anyone shed light on this? Today I've had one cacher log 37 found logs on a series of 16 caches. One cache he found six times! This isn't confined to one player, and when I've notified cachers that I'll be deleting their duplicate logs, I've learned two things: 1. This isn't intentional! (Some are upset if they read the deleted log notifies first, others are embarrassed. Some may be put off caching if they can't trust the tools.) 2. They're *all* using phones. (But not all live-logging, sometimes they batch-log) (It's also getting MUCH more frequent - some 30 duplicates on this one little series this week alone. It's probably not a coincidence that it's a particularly newbie-friendly series in a high tourist area.) So - badly behaved app? Or a problem with the API? I've asked a few people about that to be told that the API doesn't always give confirmation; or has long timeouts so if they're in a poor data signal area, their phone app tries again. Now - as somebody who's done a bit of software, that's all fine. You would have systems in place on the server to prevent duplicate logs. Except Groundspeak doesn't. I know that topic's come up a few times before, but I've never seen a logical reason why logs that are identical (words, status, date) are not rejected automatically, forcing cache owners to spend time doing housekeeping. Does anyone know why? Groundspeak haven't acted on this suggestion previously, is it likely they will if I file it again? Does anyone know of an automated way of dealing with these? (Project-GC will show any that I miss at notification time)
  9. Oh - also worth thinking about. The Cherrybrook is run by Dartmoor Dave, a local geocacher - also a good base to walk from! http://www.thecherrybrook.co.uk/
  10. Hi, welcome to Dartmoor. I would suggest two places. 1st, Postbridge. Good pub and B&B near to GC4EMMF, which also leads quickly out onto the moor and you can go as far as you want that way, up the river and back down the other side. Very pretty area. 2nd, Princetown. Choice of B&Bs (Fox Tor cafe well known for catering to walkers). No specific trail for this location, but walk in almost any direction straight onto the moor. Better views than Postbridge, but less water. Some nice history around GCXTY2 at Fox Tor Mire. From both places it's possible to walk to the North and into the Live Firing ranges - check here for dates. If they're firing that day, don't go past the red and white poles; https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/dartmoor-firing-programme Also worth considering: Widdecombe in the Moor. Haytor, Two Bridges - each with B&B and Pub to base yourself from. Lots of other opinions to be found if you ask this question on the local facebook group; https://www.facebook.com/groups/383438051683191/
  11. I have been in the same position, and just as frustrated as you - but there really is no better way that I can think of. What I did, was rather than go out and collect the cache (which was really quite remote - an hour's drive and then another hour's walking each way), instead I published it on opencaching.org and opencaching.org.uk as a non-Groundspeak geocaching. Neither get anywhere near the same number of visitors, but neither are likely to have another cache of the same type within their restrictions. It saves the effort being a complete waste of time.
  12. There are ways, but they all seem a bit faffy. Gsak can export POI in a number of formats, and I did get caching POI's working with one of the free satnav apps, but I can't for the life of me remember which one. Personally, in your situation, I would use the free app, c:geo, to display a live map with caches. Might not go baa, but it does what you describe. Won't navigate at the same time (might in the background?) but maybe you have two phones? (You mention 'we')
  13. As somebody who often has to use project-gc.com's "Find bad logs" feature to locate duplicate finds on my caches and delete them, which takes my time and sometimes causes bad feeling on both sides - I fully support this simple and logical suggestion. On some of my newbie-friendly series and people using phones, every third or fourth visitor double-logs or sometimes triple or even more (I accept it's accidental, and they don't generally know about it). It's very irritating to us COs who like to keep things right and proper when a code fix would solve it entirely. Please make this change to the API.
  14. Hi Zoe Great idea. Not something I can help with directly (I rarely do events, just a personal thing) - but if you don't get many answers in here, there are very active facebook groups for the Southwest - Devon Geocachers and Cornwall Geocachers. There's people in there that regularly host and attend events so far more knowledgeable than I.
  15. Er - this was a question I asked TWO YEARS AGO! Resurrected recently by somebody else promoting an alternative. I got my answer back then, and in fact moved on to paying for GSAK and happy with that decision.
  16. Five DNFs after a long string of finds... Don't waste more of your time until somebody reliable finds it again - it's probably been muggled. Post a Needs Maint and if no response within a reasonable time, follow up with a needs archived if the owner is gone. (A direct note to a recent finder might be useful - chances of somebody on here having done this one particular cache is fairly slim - although theoretically possible)
  17. Hi Fairby This is what you want: http://talkytoaster.co.uk/maps/ Full OSM mapsets for Garmin GPSrs including your 64s. The included TOPO maps are extremely basic (trunk roads only) and really not much use. (They're also comically wrong - Torbay has railtracks extending some considerable distance into the sea!) Full instructions on the site, but download, unzip, copy into the \Garmin folder on the GPS and off you go.
  18. I see somebody's pointed a finger on there already. Not condoning rudeness in any way of course, but GC4NEW5 isn't marked as having limited accessibility so it prompts a question. If it's a public area, or a private area with owner's consent (as it should be) then why was it marked out of bounds by the orienteering organisers? To competitors, fair enough - but if they'd finished their run and removed their numbers (so weren't identifiable by the marshal) - were they still competitors or have they turned into members of the public out caching? What right do orienteerers or any private group, have to deny them access? The possibility it isn't an unctuous marshal quivering in rage because somebody ignored his silver foil marshall's badge shouldn't be overlooked. (Although I have limited experience with orienteering, I have met marshalls on over competitive events and some of them really do like to throw their weight around)
  19. Not a premium member, justintim1999 - they're a regular member. And, obviously I would think, a young male child. (My view, fwiwL: Delete the mildly offensive one, leave the rest, don't worry about it)
  20. Either that, or just click the Favourites banner at the top of the cache page - it'll dropdown showing the option to favourite, or remove an existing one.
  21. These are indeed excellent containers. (Not the ones with the metal screw lids though, they tend to rust out) Not having a friend in a hospital, I buy mine off ebay, mostly 60ml but the occasional 100ml one too.
  22. To save others the job of negotiating the recently changed website to find out the area concerned, they seem to be Oxford/North of Oxford in Southern England. A little too far from me to take on I'm afraid (thought they must be as not covered by Notifications). Credit for offering them around, hope somebody can take some - there looks to include well liked caches there.
  23. That's an unnecessarily brutal response from cerberus1. But... I kind of see what they mean. Not only that, but it's not an old cache, placeds in 2013, hasn't received many visitors nor has it earned any fave points. To be fairly blunt myself, I'm not sure why it's worth preserving. The nature of geocaches is they have a natural lifespan, for as long as their CO maintains them. That has been reached by you, clearly, and unless it's venerable or special in other ways, I think you'll struggle to find someone else to take it over. Also odd is your profile - never found a cache and only placed one. Bit strange! Anyway - on the face of it, well done for not just abandoning it. You may have reasons you can't maintain it (health or life getting in the way) but although rude, the above advice is not bad advice. Either collect it in yourself, or ask someone else to, so you're not littering - and archive it. Don't be too sentimental, you'll be clearing a space for somebody else to come along and place theirs.
  24. (Tin foil hat on) If you're the only one to get it, then it might be somebody trying to socially engineer you to supply your address...
  25. daddycool - I have records of all Dartmoor geocaches that have been active on Groundspeak going back three years or so, and none have biggles in the title. It could be an opencache (opencaching.org or .org.uk - entirely different ones) or, as bear and ragged mention, one that was placed but was never published for whatever reason. Either way, unlikely you'll get a smiley for it. There are a few areas that you can't place on open moorland - Willsworthy, Spitchwick and a couple of tors, but the vast majority of places on the moor can be achieved under the Dartmoor National Park guidelines.
