  1. Hi, I've been geocaching for a donkey's years and used to hang around these boards, but like I said, it's been a long time. My personal preference in regard to caching technique has been to download caches to both my Nuvi 1450 for navigating to the general area and to an Oregon 450 for the off-road portion of the search. A few weeks ago we went on a road trip, and the Nuvi lasted about 15 minutes, then shut down. I tried everything to resuscitate it, but it simply would not power up at all. A call to Garmin was fruitless. They simply said "we no longer support that model"

So I'm looking for a new auto-routing GPS that easily downloads GPX files. Preferably not Garmin, since their service policy sucks.

    Suggestions?

  2. For many years, I have kept a database of caches I have visited. Amongst other things, every day I need to enter the last-found date for a given number of caches. Yes, this is a mindless waste of time, but at least it's pretty much a mechanical thing, and I don't have to think about what I'm doing. Until now! No way do I want or should I have to sit down and mentally calculate a date based on how many days ago it was from today. Why was this deemed necessary?

  3. We wouldn't normally post more negativity, but we need to add our voices to those geocachers who are disappointed with this update.

Is there a policy to dumb down this site and/or this game? The last few upgrades seem to be going that way. The silly new smiley faces from a few updates ago, and now huge avatars and no dates on posts??? What are you thinking? Maybe you think everyone who geocaches is under the age of 10?

And we are very upset about this new challenge thing. As others have said a challenge is something worthy to work toward, to spend time, energy and money to accomplish a task that has to do with geocaching. We love those challenges. Now, challenge has taken on a whole new meaning and it's a dumbed down meaning.... and from what I saw today it is just stupid ... "Kiss a Frog" and a few later "Kiss a Dick"... what? no oversight?

So much is getting dumbed down these days, I guess we shouldn't be surprised that geocaching.com is also on the chopping block.

We want to opt out of this stupid challenge thing.

And bring back the dates! Soon.

  4. I am looking for a cache that I visited in the past, only I don't remember which cache it was. However if there was a way to do a word search on all my logs I could find it, since I do remember a particular word I used in the log. Is there any way to perform a search on all my logs?

  5. I would recommend the Google translator, http://translate.google.com/

While the translation is not perfect, it usually is good enough to find the cache. For more complex mystery caches, this may not be the case, though.

Yes, I use that one. Except today I attempted to translate an archived cache, and got the message "You are not logged in" When I logged in, and re-attempted the translation, I got the same message. I tried refreshing the page. Nothing works. How do I get past the login request?

  6. Google Earth will only permit a route with a start and end point. No stops in between. Using Google Maps, you can create a route with multiple stops. However, I am not sure how to generate the KML file needed for finding caches. At this site you can generate a KML which will open in Google Earth, but again, I cannot see how to import it to geocaching.com for finding caches.

Am I missing the obvious, or is it just not possible?

  7. Just to reiterate

    1) My route PQ follows the roads

    2) I successfully created several PQs but they were yielding too many results.

    3) When I edit them, I get an error message

    4) When I attempt to delete them I get an error message

Only by archiving them and creating a new PQ can I get anywhere.

  8. Two thoughts.

1] "Preview" your pocket query before you run it. That will show you whether it does what you want without wasting one of your daily 5.

2] When you get that error message. Click on Refresh. Most of the time you'll proceed on your merry way to wherever you were headed. I've submitted those before and have never, ever heard back. Now, as long as I can keep going my attitude is "Who knows, who cares?"

    Cache on.

Thanks. I'll give it a shot

  9. I created a PQ last week and ran it on Wednesday.

It generated too many caches for my requirements, so I reduced the search distance to 0.1 mi, narrowed the cache type to Traditional, and Terrain/Difficulty to <=1.5, rescheduled to today (Monday).

I clicked on Submit Information and received the following

"Your request has resulted in an error.

You may choose to retry your previous request.

Or you may tell us what you were doing when this error occurred."

I submitted a reply (but have not received an answer)

I then decided to delete the original PQ and restart from scratch.

From the My Pocket Queries list, I selected the PQ in question, and clicked on 'Delete this query'

Once again, I receive the same error message

"Your request has resulted in an error.

You may choose to retry your previous request.

Or you may tell us what you were doing when this error occurred."

    What do I do now?

  10. I frequently have to run the process several times to upload a file to my nuvi 750

The error message I get is as follows:

"The file C:\Program Files\Garmin/Geocache TourGuide.gpx is invalid. Do you want to want to continue?"

    (sic)

Pressing YES or NO in each case terminates the process.

The files are in the specified folder but do not upload to the device.

In the past it has worked after several attempts.

As of today, no matter how many tries, it is simply not working at all.

Maybe I solved it already. Is there a problem with symbols in cache names?

I found one such cache and renamed it in GSAK, and the file uploaded with no problem.

Thus ending 2 hours of hair-pulling frustration!!

  12. There seem to be many 'flavours' of the GPX file 'standard'.

Maybe you should try an unmolested file directly from geocaching.com into your GPS.

If that doesn't work, import that into GSAK, and export as a separate GPX file and try to send that to your GPS.

Can't think of anything else right now. But, you are not trying to send the ZIP of the GPX to your GPS right?

The problem is specifically related to the GSAK nuvi macro by pilotsnipes, so I have moved my query to that forum. Thanks!

  13. I frequently have to run the process several times to upload a file to my nuvi 750

Now it is simply not working at all.

  14. Speaking of Greasemonkey...

I asked this before and was told it was a Greasemonkey script, but I can't find it.

My cache pages used to show a hyperlink in the top right corner for all my logs for that particular cache. That is now gone. How do I get it back?

    see post #6 above.

    Oops...Thanks!
