  1. Well done Postie! ------ An it harm none, do what ye will
  2. Surely Red Dwarf was one long show about Geocaching? The were continuously searching for the World's biggest cache (ok, it was the World) and kept on going round and round in circles on the way. The clever bit of kit (Holly) they had to guide them kept getting them lost. Sounds pretty much like caching to me. ------ An it harm none, do what ye will
  3. Lecture her on how much damage the emissions from her car do to the environment, or for that matter the electricity it takes to cook her food in the evening. We all damage the environment every day. Then ask her what she has done recently - and by that, emphasise actually going out of her way, not just using the recycling van provided by the local council - to actually help the environment. I bet my money that she hasn't done much, if anything at all. Show her the pics that yumitori was kind enough to link to, and then ask her once more who was doing more to destroy nature? Us, the Geocachers who enjoy it, and clear up after other people, or people who can't get off their high horses long enough to realise just how hypocritical they're being? Then leave her be, and go out caching! Just out of spite. ------ An it harm none, do what ye will
  4. Nice article. Brief, but informative. It deserves a frog. ------ An it harm none, do what ye will
  5. From Cache Lisiting Requirements... quote: Commercial Caches / Caches that Solicit What is a commercial cache? A commercial use of the web site cache reporting tool is an direct or indirect (either intentional or non-intentional) attempt to solicit customers through a geocaching.com listing. Examples include for-profit locations that require an entrance fee, or locations that sell products or services. Solicitations are also off-limits. For example, caches perceived to be posted for religious, political, or social agendas will not be listed. Geocaching is supposed to be a light, fun activity, not a platform for an agenda. Some exceptions can be made for certain cache types (e.g. locationless) In these situations, permission can be given by the geocaching.com web site. However, permission should be asked first before posting. If you are in doubt, ask first. The reasoning for the above rule seems clear, at least to me: if it has an agenda, it shouldn't be allowed. There are exceptions - there have been charity caches, and the Inside Out cache was placed with the help of the BBC (but not as an advertisement). A purely commercial cache placed by a business to advertise their wares? Personally, I wouldn't visit it. ------ An it harm none, do what ye will

  7. quote:Originally posted by ETREX 700:I heard of one geocaching incident that ended in death, I think it was heat related. Also, the owner of this cache busted his ankle while placing it. Yup - That'd be me. Caused more by ineptitude rather than anything else, I think. I still don't walk straight, but I'm grateful that it didn't result anything more serious. ------ An it harm none, do what ye will
  8. Before sliding down the log, Tim forgot to take into account the obligatory comical spike at the bottom... ------ An it harm none, do what ye will
  9. Or you've always use this one... Oh, my! The possibilities are endless... if only they would. ------ An it harm none, do what ye will
  10. quote:Originally posted by Satch1947:While looking for "Corridor II: The path of Least Resistance", waypoint GCA4AC, I found a romantic greeting card with a love note in the card. The card was in a baggie and placed in the hollow of an old tree. THIS WAS NOT THE CACHE, IT WAS JUST IN THE SAME GENERAL LOCATION. The card and baggie appeared to be quite old. I got the feeling that it was a drop spot for two lovers who probably had other commitments and could not always meet face to face. Perhaps it was the last love letter before a sorrowful but necessary breakup. Or maybe someone just really, really liked old trees? Anyway... coolest thing I've ever found? A headlamp, fully functional, brand new. Left it in there because I didn't have anything worthy enough to trade for it. ------ An it harm none, do what ye will
  11. quote:Originally posted by Gunther:But this is all changing the subject a bit - you seem to only now want to discuss what the thread and post started - as I said earlier this is a bit irrelevant now (50 odd posts later). I suspect and apologise if I am wrong that you are trying to be a bit clever with me No, it was more in response to my own realisation that after I had written a long treatise about spouting off and not producing the facts, no one had asked if you had any. I therefore deleted my treatise, and asked the obvious question. The last ten lines that you have written have produced a far beter insight into your position than the previous entirety of this thread. ------ An it harm none, do what ye will
  12. quote:I'm sorry if you don't want to be questioned and if you think that if you shout and slur me you can shut me up and drive me away (like others before) but as I said if you want a closed shop start a private forum. Quite the opposite - I am always pleased to discuss the positive and negative implications of anything. It is always a beneficial process to go through. So please, lets discuss the facts, rather than conjecture. What do you base your unease of G:UK upon, other than your gut feeling? At this point I should also note that I don't use G:UK, and haven't for a month or so, so please feel free to assume that I know nothing of the site at all and describe it fully. ------ An it harm none, do what ye will
  13. Y'know, I never really set out to be a trendsetter, but once - just once - I'd love to stumble upon a new idea. Ho humm, such is life. ------ An it harm none, do what ye will
  14. Embarrassing Cache Tip: When chasing a FoxHunt cache, think carefully about the projected route. When doing the CIN Fox Hunt last year, we drove halfway around southern England, from Winchester, to Havant, to Staines only to realise that the Fox had passed us heading in the other direction. Full mileage came to about 350. We eventually caught up with him less than a mile away from home. ------ An it harm none, do what ye will
  15. Congratulations, and all the best! Can't help but start thinking... which ingenius cacher will be the first to propose via Geocaching? Perhaps leaving the ring as the solitary cache prize? ------ An it harm none, do what ye will
  16. Well done! Keep up the good work! ------ An it harm none, do what ye will
  17. quote:Originally posted by Gunther:As I said previously it does not take much to initiate a bad response from this forum which does not show it up in a good light – it is easy to blame the trolls, inflamatory posts etc but in the end it is the responses by the regular posters contributors that do the damage. Sorry, Gunther, I'm afraid you've lost me here. Are you saying that if someone makes an inflamatory post, they are not to blame? I understand what you're saying about not responding to trolls being the best way to deal with them (it's covered exhaustively on this website) which is in itself a very valid point, and something we should all remember (myself most definately included) but I'm afraid I don't really get the idea that a controversial remark is not in essence designed to do damage. It seems to me that it is one thing to suggest that the best way to deal with a troll is to ignore them, but quite another to blame people who do respond to them for the fallout. If, for example, I was to post a new thread on these forums stating that I believed Moss Trooper* was downright useless as a moderator, and should never have returned to the post, I have no doubt that a wealth of people would rise to suggest otherwise, or at least ask me to support my statements. With very little effort I could kick off an argument - not due to the nature of this board in particular, but rather because I would have damaged a good name, and people will want to defend that. This is a public forum, granted, but we are by and large a community of people. The majority of us do not drop in and drop out on a whim, and know each other fairly well. As was made transparent in the recent discussions, we do all have different points of view, but on the whole, we do also all get along. We may well be able to say what we like, and when, but that doesn't mean we should. Just as in the real world. Just because you could start a thread that casts doubt on G:UK with no evidence to support it, or accuse MCL of having "tantrums" it doesn't mean that you should have done. And if someone - anyone - posts something that is accusatory, controversial, and perhaps more importantly, not supported by any evidence, we shouldn't really be surprised when people respond by being offended. Such is life. There may well be better ways to deal with trolls, but the people that use these forums to discuss caching aren't the ones to blame. Perhaps, rather, the blame should lie at the feet of those who find it amusing to post immature trollish threads in the first place. * FWIW, I'm really glad that Moss Trooper has returned. He does a grand job. ------ An it harm none, do what ye will [This message was edited by Kouros on May 20, 2003 at 08:25 AM.]

  19. Oddly enough, my headlamp doesn't attract bugs, but my hairwax (as opposed to the ear variety) does. It's very annoying. I think I may have to go so far as trying a different brand, or *shudder* going without. ------ An it harm none, do what ye will

  21. quote:Originally posted by Motley Crew:I've noticed the use of the word 'partner' (when referring to ones 'wife/husband', 'other/better half', 'fiance/finance', etc, etc.) is becoming more commonplace these days. I use the term 'partner' as I hate the term 'girlfriend', and to stop people thinking that Sarah is my wife, and also from having to explain which Sarah I am talking about (partner, sister or one of numerous friends with the same name) every conversation. There's a wealth of smutty jokes just waiting to be set loose after your nod to the cowboy film reference. ------ An it harm none, do what ye will
  22. Easy? Easy? Noo.... You're not trying hard enough! You have to spend at least half an hour wandering in circles, and avoiding looking under the prickly thing even though you know the cache is probably there but you don't want to tear yourself to shreds. Glad you're enjoying the game! ------ An it harm none, do what ye will

You forgot the bit about Mark and Ian logging caches under Lee Harvey Oswald's name. Say, where were you on November 23rd, 1963, anyhow? Hmm... one of life's greatest mysteries might've just been solved! ------ An it harm none, do what ye will
