I have a Garmin Vista, so I have lots of RAM to put to use with detailed maps, but at the prices they charge, I want to make sure I get one that's the most useful. Toyguy I would suggest you try the Mapsource Map Viewer yourself 1st to see which product data you like best. For me (I have the same RAM as you) the topo was best suited. It has about every road and cartpath out there with respectable topo and lake data. One of the reasons I bought topo is because it has every lake named, which is nice if you go to areas in Northern MN like the BWCAW. However, if you are more of an urban type, Metroguide may be better as all the roads will be named. Topo will have the same roads, but ony the more major roads and highways will be named. I've rambled enough already, check it out youself above.... "Never have a philosophy which supports a lack of courage..."

I find it to be very accurate in 99% of the situations. Have yet to have it konk out on me on a mission. But I recommend buying a unit that is comfortable for you. Try and find a place that will let you demo one? Wojo The V would be my 2nd Choice (or maybe even my top choice) if I had to do it all over again. You really have to see the V side by side with a 76S or even a MAP76 to get the 'feel' for yourself. My store had the V, MAP 76, Vista & Mag-Platinum for me to handle in the store. In the end, I ordered the 76S and do not regret it one bit. I wish the 76S body and features also had the V autorouting and the Maggie SD cards, then you would have THE perfect unit. Having a 76S myself, by the time you add Mapsource and any accessories the V has standard, you're in the same price "range". You may want to consider waiting for the V Deluxe or taking the plunge now. In regards to 76 vs. Vista resolution. The 76 has a very fine resolution (especially when compared to the Maggies). It only 'appears' larger than the Vista, not courser. Follow that? Good Luck with the decision... "Never have a philosophy which supports a lack of courage..."

  11. quote:Originally posted by rghermes:I'm looking to upgrade to the 76S from my Vista. Has anyone done this? Any new features or convenience with the 76S? I did the product comparison on Garmin's website. I am looking for real life reviews of this unit. "I am umbilically connected to the temperate zone. It's brought me life. It's brought me love, I never have outgrown"----J. Buffett Although I don't own a Vista, I did just shop and compare the Vista, V & 76S. I bought the 76S. Here's my $.02 if I were in your shoes... 1) The Vista is a very capable unit with the same map memory as the 76S and similar compass & altimeter features. I don't know that I would replace a Vista w/ a 76S unless I could readily sell my Vista or the following compilation was 'worth' it to me: - I like the button layout on the 76 series MUCH better than the E-Trex series. It's easier to navigate an the buttons are clearly marked. - If the patch antenna of the Vista bugs you, the Quad in the 76S is better. - Does the Vista have an external antenna port? I have a 76S and the external antenna has been great in the VERY dense tree cover. - The 76S floats, which was important to me as a canoeist. - Screen is larger, but not much. - Don't know much about the firmware differences, you'll have to judge that for yourself. Are there things you don't like about the Vista that led you to this decision? If so, sometimes the little things that bug you about something make a switch worth while. Good Luck, let us know what you decide and why. "Never have a philosophy which supports a lack of courage..."
  12. quote:Originally posted by Team Golden:Has anyone found a fix for the MeMap screen so it isn't backwards? You probably know this already, but the MeMap displayed the text backwards on the computer screen, but the MeMap download placed the text perfectly to my 76S as others have mentioned. I too would be interested to see if MeMap has fixed this slight bug. "Never have a philosophy which supports a lack of courage..."

I want to find a cache in Michigan and it seems like the closet I can get is a couple of miles away through some harsh territory. It seems like one of those "you cant get there from here" deals. Team BPACH..We dont know where we are going, but we know where we are. What's the name of the cache.... I'd be interested in seeing if the road in question is on the Mapsource Topo program. You can preview it through garmin's website... Click Here then under Mapsource viewer, select TOPO East.. Good Luck! "Never have a philosophy which supports a lack of courage..."

  16. Everything said below could be said of the 76S as I've had the same experience with my 76S as Olar with his V. quote:Originally posted by Olar: My V hangs on my backpack strap with the antenna at approx. chest height. Occasionally in extremely heavy tree cover combined with being down in a ravine I have lost sat. signal. Holding it out and up a bit brings it back on-line in no time. There are many times I would have expected loss of signal but it hung in there (literally and figuratively speaking). I can't answer your other question as I'm not familiar with the 76S Cheers, Olar http://www.plauder-smilies.com/wavey.gif In the end you have to decide which unit is right for you. It helps if you can go out see them 1st hand. I've posted my V vs. 76S decision if you care to search the archives for it. Good Luck! "Never have a philosophy which supports a lack of courage..."

I placed some caches the other day and didn't see any, but evidently there was some poison ivy, because I have broken out. One of the people who found one of the caches noticed some. I don't know how much is there. Anyway, should I move the cache, post a warning, or what? There's none around the cache posted on the original question. I took great care in locating an area with relatively little poison ivy. If you approach the cache from the direction of "least bushwacking" the area is clear of PI. There is PI in other locations in this park. To me, mosquitos and a discrete cache location often can't be avoided. Poison Ivy on the other hand is a real pain in the A_s! For me and my house, we'll keep any future caches out of the poison ivy and we WOULD move a cache if we found out it was heavily guarded by the nasty weed. We've skipped at least one cache because of PI. Your mileage may vary.... "Never have a philosophy which supports a lack of courage..."

  21. quote:Originally posted by BusBoy: Held on tight and waited through the two minutes of the upload and, sure enough, it worked!!! The question still stands, though. Wouldn't it be nice of the Garmin people to add an officially sanctioned screen at startup that displays your contact information? The update worked well for me and have seen no problems since updating. I like some of the new features. MeMap worked well for me. As stated by others, the preview screen is backwards, but the update worked well. The only reason I can think of for Garmin NOT making their own lawyer screen possible is that it would make it easier for the uninformed to change that screen should they find your GPS. ??? On JC9000's question about city navigation. The 76S has good memory capacity for downloading maps and a good screen size. It's helped me navigate some new urban areas. That being said, it does not do automatic routing as is with the V. Good Luck! "Never have a philosophy which supports a lack of courage..." I stand corrected.... they do carry the rating which should support the 'dunking' mentioned above.... my most humble apologies....

If that doesn't work, it's time to go shopping...
