I am considering the purchase of a battery charger and AA NiMH rechargeables. Chargers? Maha C204F or AllTek AT-1268 ??? both appear to be very good. Any comments? I am waiting for a reply from Thomas Dist. on this question as well. Batteries? Powerex vs. GP vs. Nexcell vs. others? I understand Powerex are rated the best? How are GP and others? They're often found cheaper than Powerex... Thanks

Another thought would be to use a "normal" handheld for the hiking activities as the aviation units get quite expensive. I'd hate to drop a 295 on a rock! [This message was edited by Us 5 Camp on April 24, 2002 at 07:19 PM.]

I am helping my father pick out a gps right now for combined aviation and automotive use. Check out the Garmin site under aviation models. You're basically looking at the GPSIII pilot, GPS 92, GPS 195 and the GPS295. The 195 & 295 are likely the only two to fit the bill, though the 295 may be a bit large for hiking. Garmin Aviation Handhelds... The folks at ...J-A Air Center seemed pretty knowledgable & had very good prices. Give them a call. Good luck and get ready to spend some $$ if you REALLY want to get what you're asking for. I placed my order yesterday for a 76S from The GPS Store and now can't wait for it to arrive. I lamented between the V & Platinum, but in the end the MAP76 & 76S won out. As these units start to show up in people's mail boxes, I'd be interested in hearing peoples experiences to shorten the learning curve for everyone (well at least mine, since this will be my 1st GPS) Waiting......

I had meeting in Minneapolis today that afforded me the opportunity to stop by a local retailer to compare 1st hand the 76Map, GPS V & Platinum (Gold). 1st off the V is dadgum cute and a real bang for the buck, but not quite what I'm after (see above). 2nd (IMHO) the Garmin GPSMAP 76 is better built, has a more intuitive interface, is more user friendly and has a better display than the Platinum (or Gold). Again, only my opinion!!! The Meridians are a nice GPS with awesome memory capability. I simply like the Garmim 76 series more and will wait to buy a 76S for the main reason of getting at least the 24Mb of storage. Anybody have an update on shipping for the 76S? Now I can't wait!!!!!!! Thanks to those who've helped me along the way and to those who've patiently listened!
