The biggest thing for me in moving to the 76S vs. the 76 was the memory of 24Mb vs. 8Mb

So does the conditioning discharge the battery too or is that the same thing as removing the battery's memory?
How important is this feature in a battery charger?
I have the AT-1268 Charger. It's "refresh" feature is used to condition NiCAD batteries. They make no mention of using it for NiMH batteries, though I doubt it would hurt them.
It's been a good charger for me. Specification wise, it's identical if not ahead of the Maha you mentioned. It listed an additional charge type circuitry over and above what maha specifies. Also, it comes WITH the car cord standard and a $3 rebate which makes the combo kit about $7 cheaper than the maha.
I've never seen the maha, so I can't compare 1st hand how the two chargers stack up.

Hopefully this post is a matter of my ignorance and I can learn my way out of this quandry....
1) I am a newbie owner of a map 76s & topo
2) I would like to load the following Boundary Waters Canoe Area (BWCA) campsite data file (sa4, street atlas format) into topo.
3) I noticed G7toWin can open Street Atlas files (which it did) and convert to Garmin waypoint file (wpt) (which it apparently did)
4) I cannot import the .wpt file into Mapsource topo. It says there my be incorrect hemispherical data starting on line 10...???
5) I was able to successfully (almost intermittently) download a few waypoints from this BWCA data directly into the gpsr from G7toWin.
Any pointers on this problem?
Any pointers on Waypoint management software or techniques in general? I have to admit; it kinda sux to spend this amount of mulla only to have to use 'shareware' type utilities like G7 or EasyGPS...???
What's the best way to manage waypoint data???
HELP...

I started over and then loaded the Northern MN patch and everything was fine; then loaded 4.07 and everything was still in working order...

Still looking for someone with insight on these packages and how they might compare to Microsoft Streets or other programs???

1st Problem, when i went to download a few sections (just to see how it works) a message came up saying it could not download the waypoints I'd created in TOPO and that Mapsource may need to be updated (my CD came with 3.XX)
2nd Problem, I downloaded and installed the new Mapsource 4.07. Topo now starts, but the minute you start to use the software it crashes and says to push a pop-up icon to copy the error message to the clipboard then send the message to garmin's tech service. I've done so last night and am waiting for garmin's reply (how are they at replying to such messages?).
So, I had to uninstall 4.07 and re-install the lower 3.xx version.
Any pointers from you guys????
BTW, my computer is a 4XX Celeron, Compaq, 256Mb RAM, Windows 98, .... anything else?

I lamented between the V & Platinum, but in the end the MAP76 & 76S won out.
As these units start to show up in people's mail boxes, I'd be interested in hearing peoples experiences to shorten the learning curve for everyone (well at least mine, since this will be my 1st GPS)
Waiting......
The GPS Store (great folks!!!!) just called.... the recieved 70+ 76S' today and mine will be at my door by friday at the latest!!!!!!!!!
GPS' are like wood turning lathes, the main machine (GPS, Lathe) is just the beginning. All the accessories really add up.
76S, Topo CD's, 76 Case, 12v adapter & shipping, just over 5 bills.... whew! There goes a lot of "Mad Money"

In the end, I placed an order with Thomas Dist. here's why it was right for me (IMHO):
*Rayovac(w/ 2 1600mAH batteries) was $29
- Maha C204F or AllTek AT-1268 w/ 4 1800mAH Powerex batteries are around $35.
- I bought the AllTek AT-1268 Charger, w/ 4 1800 Powerex batteries which also comes with a 12V cord for charging in the car (like the Rayovac) for $33 after $3 rebate. So, for $4 I got (4) 1800 Powerex vs. (2) 1600 Rayovac batteries.
Made sense to me. Of course I also paid shipping, but while I was buying I also bought some 700mAH AAA's for our FRS radios and a few extra AA & AAA's for other items around the house (like kid's toys, etc).
- In the end the Rayovac is and excellent charger.
For me, I thought the AllTek AT-1268 was a better charger and Thomas Distributing . has a better selection of NiMH batteries than WAllyWorld.

Hello,
I am looking for comments on the strength /weekness' of mapping programs similar to Delorme's Street Altas Deluxe & Microsoft Streets & Trips for use with a 76S while driving with a laptop and for use in creating routes on the software and download to the 76S sans laptop...
Follow all that?
Or, is metroguide equally capable? (yes, I realize Garmin software is my only choice for actually downloading the map)
The maps I'll own now are: 76S basemap & Garmin Topo

Chargers? Maha C204F or AllTek AT-1268 ??? both appear to be very good. Any comments? I am waiting for a reply from Thomas Dist. on this question as well.
Batteries? Powerex vs. GP vs. Nexcell vs. others?
I understand Powerex are rated the best? How are GP and others? They're often found cheaper than Powerex...
Thanks
Got off topic here for a while... still interested in experiences with the charges above (or your personal favorite).
Also, any good/bad experiences with the batteries mentioned above....
Thanks to those who've posted thus far...

I noticed the picture was a MAP76...
I like how the screen looks... is there any reason this utility wouldn't work for the 76S I'll be receiving late this week? (hopefully)

Garmin GPSmap 76S Question
in GPS technology and devices
Posted
I'll start off by saying, this is my 1st GPSr and I've only had the 76S for a few weeks (although the odometer is now over 1000mi).
With regards to reception, I have had very good luck. While driving I regularly get 10 to 12 satellites locked in. I haven't gotten out to the woods with it yet, but we're going camping soon and I'll have a chance to check it out while hiking in the mountains.
I really like the buttons on the front as opposed to the side for the etrex line. it's so easy to use while driving. Driving sans a mount, i wedge it against the dash and windshield. The buttons on the front make for quick, safer access.
The basemap is really pretty good (especially while driving on the interstate). It announces each upcoming exit or road (unless you wish to turn this off).
I bought and loaded topo for the more rural area of my travels and to get the lakes of the BWCA where I canoe.
Don't know what else I can tell you. I bought mine through The GPS Store and was very satisfied with their service. BTW, they offer a neoprene case with a clear window specifically for the 76 line. I like the little added protection from scratches, etc..
Any other question, please don't hesitate to ask...
