Their prices are very good and they'll match any authorized dealer's price. I bought a 76S from them and couldn't have been happier with the service. The Platinum was my other choice. It was hard to turn down the SD card memory expansion, but I chose the 76S for it's high resolution screen and (IMO) the more intuitive interface (I tried both units side by side). The Platinum is very nice and I am sure I would also be satisfied with it. Good Luck,

Search the archives on gps speed or speedometer accuracy. I believe you'll find GPS speed indications are accurate to within tenths of a mile per hour. I certainly trust the gps speed more than my auto speedometer. I've timed all my vehicles while on long road trips and my calculations of actual speed agree with the speed indicated by my gps.

Thanks for continuing to work on Geobuddy. I plan to use it for the 1st time this week.

I've had my 76S now for a month or so and have very much enjoyed this new hobby of geocaching (found this site researching gps purchase). Anyway, my biggest frustration has not been with ticks, mosquitos, signals strength under tree cover, etc. I am quite pleased with the Garmin unit and enjoy geocaching very much. My beef is with waypoint/data management. I have Topo, EasyGPS & tried G7toWin. None alone are perfect waypoint/route management tools. I want a software that will allow me to easily sort out my waypoints, easily share waypoints between several files, easily download only selected waypoints, easily add more waypoints to a file w/o creating a new file by default (as with Mapsource). In Mapsource if I have a file open and i want add waypoints to it from another source, it defaults to start a new file. I know I am not being 100% clear, but I also feel I am likely preaching to the choir. Other cacher's must know what I mean!!! What is your 'system' for data management? What software do you use? What steps do you have to take for adequate data filing? What do you like best/worst about your software & system of management? I am thinking of trying ExpertGPS. Is this the answer? Other recomendations? Thanks, QUESTION: What software do you use to manage gps data (waypoints, routes, tracks, etc)???

The travel bugs don't appear on the geo-store, only on the travel bugs page. Which means, you can't order (right now at least) gear AND travel bugs on the same order. The onlything on the gear page is a link to the travel bugs page where you can buy bugs only. This hasn't always been this way has it?

TheGPSstore(.com) and TVNAV are two great dealers who know GPS, offer great service AND the best prices. I went with TheGPSstore.com, ordered over the phone and had a lot of my questions answered by them. They matched the best dealer price I'd found and the transaction went smoothly. My final choices were the V and the 76S. I am no expert, but I chose the 76S (search my posts and you'll see a detailed list as to why it was the right choice for me). Having said that, depending upon your use, the V is one heck of a value. Good Luck... After buying your GPS, pay a visit to ThomasDistributing.com for you rechargeable battery needs. Also wanted to second the note below about visiting Joe M's site on GPS info. The best out there for volumes of information!

Just curious, before geocaching the most common ammo box size I've seen has been the 50mm. Most of the (few) caches I've seen have been using a narrower ammo box that I presume to be 7.62mm. What's your favorite ammo box size for placing caches? (Yes, I realize it depends upon cover, size of the hiding spot, size of the cache contents, etc. But, What's your personal preference?)

GPSMAP 76S vs. GPS V for caching/hiking
Us 5 Camp replied to DaveMcL's topic in GPS technology and devices
I recently bought the 76s after much research and deliberation... Here's why I bought the 76S over the V as the better choice for ME (YMMV)...: * Screen Size... the V is small * Floats ( Canoeing in the BWCA was one reason for the purchase) * 24Mb vs. 19Mb for maps * Routing wasn't a big seller for me. * Didn't care for the external antenna. I've already dropped by 76S for short tumbles and wasn't sure how the V's external antenna would hold up. * 76S just felt better to me.... That's it... Your mileage may vary.... -

We're about 1/2 way through our vacation to Colorado and used the 76S extensively... on the B17 cache we were bushwacking through dense forest at 10,200 ft. Reception was a lot better than I'd expect. Reception would drop out for rare and brief instances and if you stopped under VVery dense cover; any light at all through the trees yeilded a lock. The compas was very handy as we'd take a reading and bushwack to a visible feature; it gave my non gps comrade something to walk towards. I am so glad I bought this GPS. The case from theGPSstore.com is great for hiking. I clipped the gps to the chest strap of my daypack and it was always accessible and maintained very good reception... The user interface on the 76 is very good and very intuitive... I feel very comfortable with the features and navigation though the unit is still pretty new...

Great question... We're newbies and we've got a 5 and 2 year old. We will be going on a 2000 mi trip soon. We're about to see how this works with the kids. They already love scavenger hunts, so I suspect this will be a blast once they figure out what it's all about.

Our family is very new to this hobby (in fact we'll be going after our 1st cache's this week during a 2000 mi roadtrip) We'd be interested in being a part of a MN geocaching group.

GPS V + laptop: 1 or 2 cables needed in a car?
Us 5 Camp replied to TheCacheCrew's topic in GPS technology and devices
No, you cannot use both the pc cable and 12v cable (as supplied) at the same time. Yes, if you want to use 12V auto power at the same time as the pc connection you'll have to have a "combo" cable that does both. OR, you can think good rechargeables.... I opted to get some good rechargeables (& a 12V capable charger) from Thomas Distributing. This helped to minimize the expense of the cable and clutter of extra wires. If I were to use the laptop "a lot", which I don't, I may have gone with the cable, but in the end I decided to try life without it and have had no problems. Also, there appears to be some good aftermarket cables out there such as gpsgeeks on ebay. Good Luck... -

I have been thinking about one of those. Thanks, Dave. Yes, it is the blue one from their website. I don't have a thickness for the window. It's thick (rigid) enough. I am glad I have the case and it works well. However, while driving there is less glare without the case. (I drive with the 76 wedged between the dash and wind shield. IMO it was worth the price (though I don't think it will last forever.

I'll start off by saying, this is my 1st GPSr and I've only had the 76S for a few weeks (although the odometer is now over 1000mi). With regards to reception, I have had very good luck. While driving I regularly get 10 to 12 satellites locked in. I haven't gotten out to the woods with it yet, but we're going camping soon and I'll have a chance to check it out while hiking in the mountains. I really like the buttons on the front as opposed to the side for the etrex line. it's so easy to use while driving. Driving sans a mount, i wedge it against the dash and windshield. The buttons on the front make for quick, safer access. The basemap is really pretty good (especially while driving on the interstate). It announces each upcoming exit or road (unless you wish to turn this off). I bought and loaded topo for the more rural area of my travels and to get the lakes of the BWCA where I canoe. Don't know what else I can tell you. I bought mine through The GPS Store and was very satisfied with their service. BTW, they offer a neoprene case with a clear window specifically for the 76 line. I like the little added protection from scratches, etc.. Any other question, please don't hesitate to ask... Never wrestle with a pig; you both get dirty and the pig likes it....
