I've been away from GPS file manipulation programs for a LONG time.
I have/use Mapsource.
I wish to share my waypoints in Mapsource format (.gdb) with a family member who has a mapping garmin gps, but no Mapsource program, not a big gps user.
We live in different states. I would like to send my .gdb files and have them open the file with a program and download data to their gps.
I can do this with GPSBabel (convert to .gpx) and then EasyGPS (download to gps).
Is there a single step option?
Are the better programs (free) to use than those I listed here?

For units with preloaded CN, are the disc(s) included for PC/Mapsource use of City Navigator, specifically GPSMAP 496 in the Aviation Series...
Relatives have bought the gpsmap 496 which did come with a DVD. They live in another town and thus I have not seen the DVD. I will be helping them get up to speed with the GPS and wish to know if the DVD that came with the new GPS includes the MapSource City Navigator material or if I'll need to request that data set from Garmin.
The garmin website is not clear on this topic.

This is the weighted mount I use for my 76CS, I like the fact that I can remove it easily and place on the floor or take the whole thing into the house. I had a suction cup 1st and like this better. It's very flexible and heavy so it conforms to the dash and doesn't slide around.

I have been away from this board for some time, so forgive me if this topic has been beaten to death.
I have a 76CS and have been a City Select user for years up through CS 6.
It seems Garmin is moving more towards the City Navigator family.
I assume from their website that the 76CS supports City Navigator.
I am interested in experiences between City Select and City Navigator, (both with the 76 series and with other gps units).
Pro's & Con's of each.

76CS:
1) It has double the memory of a 60CS. Enough said right there (IMHO) !
2) It IS nearly the same size as the 60.
Garmin spec's
76CS: 6.2"H x 2.7"W x 1.4"D
60CS: 6.1"H x 2.4"W x 1.3"D
.... (yes I know, the 60 has a Rhino antenna and it more rounded in places....)
3) It DOES fit in a shirt or coat pocket.
4) I have taken a 76s or 76CS deer hunting each of the past 3 years. Worked great!
5) It floats, which might be important since you mentioned boats.
6) According to Garmin, it's basemap is 'more detailed' than a 60, see thread below...

7) I have tried the 60 series and understand others may prefer it's form, I however, preferred and bought the 76.... YMMV

- Text sizes are way too big with too much 'white space' for data fields.

As for Size, the 60 people will claim the 76 is the size of a small river barge. NOT True. In fact the total exterior dimensions are nearly identical. I know, I know, the 76 case is largely rectangular (i.e. it floats) and the 60 case has the rhino style antenna and rounded off bottom, but the point is, the 76 series is NOT huge. It fits in shirt pockets, it fits beautifully in my hands. My wife is rather petitte and she has no complaints using the 76cs. I am only rambling on so, because the 60 crowd would scare off any potential purchasers who've never even seen a 76 series.
If you find you need accessory cables and such: GPS Geek (a.k.a. Gilsson Tech) can't be beat! They also sell a very nice case with clear window for the 76 series!
RAM mounts are great and become relatively inexpensive once you expand to multiple uses (i.e. car, bike, etc) RAM Mounts specific to the 76 series...
I've said if before and here it is again:
"I'll take double the memory of the 60 series in a floating case any day!!!!!"

I would buy a 76CS w/ City Select, a selection of RAM mounts for my car/bike/canoe and put the remaining $400 into my pocket.
....wait a minute, that's what I DID !!!
I don't know about you, but one GPS is plenty for me when it comes to downloading and uploading geocache waypoints to more than one unit. I prefer one unit for autorouting and subsequent hiking to a cache or campsite or ???
If I had the cash I would have a 2620 and an autorouting-handheld.

My 76CS has been VERY quick to lock and maintain lock with the exception of two days.
Both were rainy days (but not the only rainy days, during which my 76CS worked fine).
On these particular days, the unit seemed like it would not lock while riding in my car. Both in the morning and on my way home from work. I can't explain it, but haven't done anything about it as it only happened twice and the weather is bad.
Other bad weather days have not been a problem and my old 76S NEVER had a problem regardless of weather. Normally the 76CS is much faster locking than my 76S ever was.

One of which I really like is:
I had a suction cup mount and returned it for the (lead) weighted and very flexible base with a rubber coating. Flexible enough to fit any dash and heavy enough to do the job. Doesn't move around.
It's flexible enough to bend all three of the 'feet' together to touch each other.

Garmin TS emailed me back today and recommended a 'master reset.'
I'm thinking of trying that and then update the SW to 3.43 regardless if the reset fixes the problem.

I had to do that to mine as well. I have not had a problem since.
How do you do a master reset?
I have a 76CS running 3.42 and still have lock-up problems on the day-view of the calender (something that's supposed to have been fixed according to their update notes).

Got word back from the guy at Garmin who's been helping me with the upgrade...according to him the v6 update is being remastered and says I may have it by Aug 1st.
I can deal no problem, just thankful that their customer support group is nice enough to keep consumers updated!
That's funny, if true, because many of us have already installed v6.

There exists OziExporer and Street Atlas USA 4 files of all the BWCA campsites and portages.
I would like to use this data and basically today only use Mapsource and Easygps.
What's the best way (free) to convert this file into a format I can use with Mapsource?

I had a 76s that I bought new, used for a few years and sold in a heartbeat for a 76CS.
I loved the 76S.
I like the 76CS even more!
Yes, the color is better IMO than the greyscale.
Don't forget the 76CS also jumps you from 24Mb of mapping memory to 115Mb and adds Autorouting.
If $ is not the issue, sell the new 76S locally or on ebay and place an order for a 76CS from TVNav.com (they know gps and are a small family business, one of the owners will answer the phone, great service and low prices).

The GPS Store... $10. If it's like the case I bought from them for my 76s, it'll have a clip for a belt loop on the back side, that I used on my shoulder strap of my backpack.

This weekend I drove from N. Idaho to Independence, Or. and used my new 76CS. I loaded up all the topo maps for the route, and using Mapsource on my computer marked off a route on the maps. I'm not sure this was required. Using the GPS I hit "Find" and entered my destination and entered "go to" and it put a little car on the screen while I guess it was making a route. It then gave me turn by turn directions while driving - the thing is amazing.
I had one problem where it froze up, none of the buttons worked so I powered it off and back on and the routing stuff was gone. It was easy enough to enter it again.
My questions are
1. Did I have to select and download all those topo maps? or was it doing the routing from the basemap?
2. Can it route to someplace not in the find menu? Say I want to go to a mountain here in Idaho - can I get it to do a route to it? How do you do this?
I'm new at this, my last GPS was a II+ - this one does a LOT more.

Unless you have City Selct loaded, the gps will route off the basemap. Put another way, TOPO does NOT support autorouting.
If you want to route to say a mountain. Select the point on the map screen by moving the arrow to it an hit enter, then goto.

All the functions seem to be working. The only problem I've found is that the "Day View" calendar is hosed. It locks up if I try to reference a saved point.
I also had the Day view lock up... mine locked when in the day view and then hitting menu.... I have not tried to duplicate again.
Everything else works well.
Note: Mine is the 76CS
3.42 fixed the issue I was having with my calender mentioned above and quoted here.... 76CS

What is the difference between the RAM mounts and Garmin's mount?
Ram Mounts are extremely flexible and adaptable to multiple uses as they are built around 1" ball mounts, couplers, bases & cradles... here's some misc. part picts...
Lead center weighted-flexible base...my personal favorite for cars...
RAM has COUNTLESS parts/subparts that can be ordered for almost any circumstance or device...

You guys are great!! Thanks for all you've written... I'm going for it!! Of course it's a totally different unit, a GPSMAP 76CS! Bought it moments ago. The hubby is thrilled and so am I! We realized just how handy this could be for his work and it's tax deductable (thanks for the tip on that!) I'll feel confident while using it to Geocach with the kids. This will be wonderful for family trips!

Congrats! and good choice (IMHO as another 76CS owner)
Don't forget, the basemap WILL autoroute, but you really 'need' City Select for autorouting on all the smaller streets, especially a necessity for a real estate business.

(CS v6 has been announced. It ships around 7/15/04, you would get the upgrade for free even if you ordered v5 today, because the new version has been 'released'. For more info... Garmin's - all too hard to understand - Unlock page...

... use a GPS for his Commercial Real Estate and when we travel so why not get one that does more.
So the questions is.... should I just go with the Legend and just use it to GeoCache or should I get the SporTrak Pro and be able to use it for gaming and more?
Money is not the issue here. Or would you suggest another unit all together?
