  1. I then crank the Elevation view up to maximum. It helps plan where the hilly areas are.
  2. Once positioned, the overlay is ready to use with Google Earth tools.
  3. Opacity can then be adjusted, giving an image of the GC icons and trail maps just visible on the map.
  4. Using the Overlay feature, I paste the GC map into Google Earth, and adjust size/position until it matches.
  5. Then I fire up Google Earth Pro (free) and zoom to the same area.
  6. In the spirit of Year Of The Hide, I thought I'd share how I do my initial research on an area I want to place some Hides in. Some might find it silly, but it's SOP before I take my bad-knee-having self on the trails. First, I take a screen grab from the area I am interested in on the GC site.
  7. A Lightsaber Cache would be awesome! PVC base with a screw cap maybe? If you copy my foam, I may steal this idea. 😀 May the Cache be with you!
  8. The foam is your basic 'Great Stuff' in the red can. Base paint is an exterior latex primer tinted with acrylic paints. Details are acrylic paint. It will get several coats of matte sealer before placing in the wild.
  9. Mostly done painting - a bit of cleanup, then time to make a logbook.
  10. Upside-down container. I have to let the glue set overnight.
  11. Stuck it to the bottom of the Cache, drilled pilot holes for galvanized screws, then topped the screw heads with foam as well.
  12. Time to attach to the Lock&Lock. Shaved some swollen foam off of the bottom to have a flatter surface:
  13. Clipped teeth from plastic and wood and glued them in.
  14. A couple more drops of Gorilla Glue, and the eyes are attached.
  15. Peeling off the plastic, I had this. Still needs some drying time.
  16. I layed out a sheet of plastic, put the wood block on it, then sprayed the foam all over the place, letting it swell. This is the bottom of it after the foam was set enough to flip over.
  17. Taking a couple of eyeballs (what, you don't have eyeballs laying about?) I put in a dollop of foaming gorilla glue to make a base.
  18. Some time ago I put a cache out called 'Zarbogalx: Hypno-Blob From The 12th Dimension'. It came about when I had a can of spray-foam and nothing to do with it, so I made a stupid container. It has long since been retired, but the other day I was in Home Depot passing the display of spray foam and figured why not reboot the little guy? I've been taking photos of the build process and thought I'd share them here. I hope they will inspire other players to make similarly stupid containers so I don't feel so bad about myself. 😀 First, a cut of wood sized for a Lock&Lock lid:
  19. I've been a Member since 2005, and have always used the word 'Hide' as a descriptive (noun) for a container.
