  1. Many/most GPS units have waypoint projection features. Using that feature is most definitely NOT cheating. Great. I saw in the logs where a couple of people mentioned having to go home, project it on a map, and return. Just wanted to make sure I was following the spirit of the hunt.
  2. My guess is that the land owners around him have to grant him a right of way to his property somehow. I like the idea of a multi, or set up a parking waypoint with specific directions on how to access the cache.
  3. I came across a multi I want to try. Stage one gives you a heading and distance to the final, but the CO highly recommends you don't just follow the compass due to terrain. Normally, this would take a map and simple plotting/projection. However, my Montana allows you to project a waypoint based on heading and distance from your current location. Would using this function be considered "cheating"? Thanks!
  4. I've had to deal with "landlocked" property personally. I inherited some. The owner of the property between yours and the nearest access road is required by law in Georgia to provide you with a right of way to access your property. If you're just putting a cache there, they should be forced to allow people to traverse their property to get to yours. YMMV in your state.
  5. My longest slump was a bit over six years.... :-(
  6. Is there a way to get a copy of the Geocaching.com API specs? Thanks
  7. Ok, so if this were a CHIRP-only it would be a mystery cache, but can be listed as a Multi since I will have a physical cache there. That clears it up!
  8. I think the OP saw "GCxx" and assumed it was geocaching.
  9. Thanks, all. I wonder if there should be an attribute that says it supports a beacon, but it is not mandatory? I'd like to attract cachers specifically looking to play with their ANT GPS, but not shun others.
  10. I had the design done up for one of those little metal things we can't mention here, but decided to also get some inexpensive nickles for putting in most every cache that they could fit in. I got them from http://www.geonickles.com. I just sent in my design (the blue sky with the flying clay target) and he did the rest. I'm still leaving a 2008 GSCA State Championship patch in some caches. I know some people collect patches of any sort.
  11. Just got my new signature wooden nickle to spread in caches. This is my first attempt at a signature item. I think it turned out pretty good. Opinions?
  12. Sorry, I used the wrong wording. I want to have a PHYSICAL cache as well as the CHIRPer in the same location, with the same information for Stage 1. Those with an ANT compatible device can get the 2nd stage info wirelessly. Those without will have to find the physical Stage 1 that will be in the same location (the chirp will be hidden and not accessible). So, whichever way you find Stage 1 it will have the same information. I wouldn't consider that two different caches, just the same cache with two different ways to garner the required information.
  13. Would it be allowed to have a CHIRP and a physical cache at the first stage of a multi? I was thinking of hiding the chirp in a tree or something similar so that those with an ANT enabled unit would be able to receive the data wirelessly. I would also have a physical cache at the same location for those with non-compatible units. I checked the rules and couldn't find anything that addresses this specifically. [edited to make my intent clearer]
  14. Maybe so, but as you can tell from some of the replies on this thread it was a topic that needed revisiting since there are new Montana owners who might not be aware of this.
  15. I'm going to start leaving my Android in the truck during hiking cache hunts from now on. I just got an old Motorola Razr that was on Verizon for free and activated it on PagePlus. $10 every 3 months, plus Verizon has better coverage in the boonies than AT&T. That gives me 100 minutes a quarter for emergencies. No one is going to get that number because when I'm out in nature I don't want to be disturbed.
  16. I compared my Atrix to my new Garmin Montana. The Atrix usually off by 20 or so feet vs the Montana. The Montana is definitely better under a tree canopy.
  17. I've read about people claiming their touchscreen was damaged when removing a screen protector. Well, I called Zagg to inquire about a Garmin Montana shield and was told that they were pulled because they could damage the touchscreen. Since this is from "the horse's mouth" I'm assuming it is accurate. Just wanted to put this as a warning out to Montana owners. The shields are still available from Amazon.
  18. Four lamp posts and "several hundred yards" of kite string? I don't really see any other way of interpreting it. If this is indeed the case, it would almost be as easy to manually search using a grid method. There would be an intersection every few feet if you used all permutations of available lines between posts to form intersections.
  19. I saw that it exports them as waypoints, but if you are paperless, there is no indication in the cache description there are additional waypoints. In a pq, additional waypoints are listed at the bottom of the description. Not so in a GSAK export.
  20. I have a database with about 3500 entries. When I export to a .GPX file, no child waypont info is exported in the main cache WPT record. GSAK shows the child waypoints of caches, but the .GPX file has none of the info listed in the main record. The long_description stops short of the additional waypoint info. The <WPT> record is there for the additional waypoint(s), but they can't be referenced from the original cache long_description. So, there may be additional waypoints but when I pull the description up on my Montana 650, no where are they listed. A GS.COM PQ shows the correct information. Yes, I have "Include Additional Child Waypoints" set to "yes". Anyone else having these issues?
  21. Found out that this appears to be an issue with GSAK.
  22. I'm in Atlanta, GA. One thing I noticed today is that if a cache has a waypoint (parking in particular) you can't get to it directly from the cache page. In fact, there is no way to reference the waypoint at all from the cache description. It doesn't even mention that there is any sort of additional waypoint. I'm guessing this is a limitation of the GPX specifiction. Guess I won't be able to TOTALLY get rid of my smartphone. I'll just use it in the truck and use the Montana while out actually searching.
  23. I had someone discover my truck at a Publix last Friday. Had to stop in and get some stuff for our Company banquet that day on the way to work. I got an email form GC.COM a couple of hours later saying that it had been discovered. Finder said it was the "Laziest find I ever made". LOL
  24. Just received my new Montana a little while ago. Was out BF shopping and got the delivery notification from UPS. Needless to say, I made a beeline straight home. I'm impressed by what I see so far. I haven't played with it much outside since the battery had no charge in it whatsoever, but the Custom Maps feature is AWESOME. I made up a few custom maps of parks in the area earlier this week and loaded them to the SD Card along with my GPX files. When I zoom into an area that I have mapped, it shows the trail map as well as the geocaches. No longer do I have to figure out which trail with get me closest to the GZ! Just had to share my excitement. Will be going out after a few today when it warms up a bit.
