  1. I like to think that having the item grayed out would be a balanced compromise between the rights of the TB/Cache owners and the right of the paying geocaching community to have a PQ system that actually works for trackables. I don't want every geocacher to have the right to modify the location of my Travel Bug so moving it out of the cache is probably not a good idea but by graying it out the PQ system would actually function again. Making a change like this would mean that the code Groundspeak writes to handle trackable items would actually have some value, right now is just a waste of manhours doing any trackable coding because this problem is widepsread, it is getting worse as the number of new geocachers grow and attempts to promote geocaching to new people creates "trackable disasters" like the one facing the park service in the links I provided. This problem destroys the effectivenes of the current PQ system in regards to trackable items. I hope someone at Groundspeak wants to fix this problem. Along with geocaches, trackable items are one of the two basic gamepieces in geocaching, and making sure the system can handle trackable items would be a no brainer, right now it is broken and the problem is getting worse. I agree with you Wavector about the problem with missing TB/GCs. And since the 'active searching cachers' are the ones using this information, it would be appropriate that they are the ones that would keep it accurate. Having a way to 'grey out' the missing items would be GREAT!!! Then when Pocket Queries are run, these missing items would be excluded from the 'cache has a TB' list, and the PQs would be more accurate and maybe function as designed. I am considering using the 'Needs Maintenance' function to report to both the CacheOwner and the local cache moderator, that the list of TB/GCs is incorrect and 'needs maintenance'. Does anyone know if a cache has the 'Needs Maintenance' function turned on, does it show up on the Google map? Also will it be automatically excluded from a PQ? Is this the appropriate thing to do now, just to get them off of the PQ lists? I know that tha appropriate thing to do here is for Groundspeak to expand the function of TBs to include a 'Item Not in Cache', so it can be greyed out for the next cachers. .
  2. This is the truth, it is very simple to return it if it is found. Having it marked into location "Unknown" doesn't have a negative impact on anyone but it does reflect the actual state of affairs. It isn't complicated at all, it is very straightforward. Cache owners and TB owners should mark that items are in locatoin "unknown" as soon as they can confirm the item is not in the cache, even if it is sitting in a cachers pocket or in the back seat of a van on holidays. I do plan maintenace visits around reports of missing bugs because a lot of cachers do choose caches that contain trackables, trackable items are one of the two basic gamepieces in geocaching and they are the focus of the adventure for many, as they should be. So even though you would never visit a cache for a trackable item the fact that many people do should be clear to everyone, look at this thread and many other threads that deal with the same issue. Wavector, I agree that if it is so simple to return a TravelBug or GeoCoin from the 'unknown' status, why don't the Cache Owners just move them to 'Unknown' area after they hear from two or three cachers that the TB/GC are no longer in the cache!! Some of us do use the indication that a travel bug is in a cache to go visit the cache to see it and move it along. Please if you are a Cache Owner, please more it to 'Unknonw' to make sure that your cache's home page it accurate. Please if you are a TB/QG Owner, please move it to 'Unknown', so when the cacher does go to log it, they can use the key code and say they found it, and can get ready to place it in the next cache. I like Wavector's idea of 'greying' out a TB/GC by a cacher response, maybe 'Item not in cache', like a 'needs maintenance' is appropriate. It would not move the TB/QG from the Cache, but at least it would not show up in the Pocket Query. We need accuracy on the home pages so people can trust what they read and what is used in the automation process. This could also cut down on the amount of data that is being processed, and may speed up the website processing The most important thing is to be accurate in all we do, so the new cachers do not get discouraged and can believe what they read on the cache home pages. .
  3. This is a nubee question. I was not sure if I should post it here on in the 'Getting Started' section. I see this entry in many GeoCaches, 'Just putting miles on my GeoCoin'. I don't under stand what that means and how to do it. I found a coin at a cache, so now I have a coin. What do I do with it? This is what I think. To 'put miles on this coin', I should drop it in a cache online, but not physically put it there. Then retrieve it back, so I can continue to find caches and log it in each one I find. Is that this means? I am I supposed to keep this coin for myself and just log miles on it, or should it be placed in another cache and say goodbye to it? Thanks in advance. checker111
  4. Thanks for the replies. I think I caused this problem being a 'nubie'. I 'grabbed it', and could not figure how to drop it, so I deleted the 'grabbed it entry'. That did not work, and eventually I found how to 'drop it' at the Cache page. Sorry about that. I think it is all back to normal. With your help I now know how to do this. Thanks for the help...checker111
  5. I am trying to figure out when a person gets credit for a travel bug, in 'profile for user: checker111', in the stats tab. (check out waypoint: GCNAA6 01/02/2006) We came on a cache with two bugs in it. We took one, found the TB number and grabbed it at the TB page...I now had '1' in my travel bug stats. We looked at the other one, found the TB number and tried to indicate that we saw it, but we wanted to leave it there for someone else to enjoy...I actually grabbed it at the TB Page, and then could not figure out how to put it back, because I did not actually have it...I eventually went back to the Cache Page to log a note that it was still there, I noticed that I could 'drop off a TB' in the Cache, so I 'dropped it off'...Now all is O.K. However, I only have 'credit' for 1 bug instead of 2. What am I missing? Do I only get credit for travel bugs if I 'greb' them and put them someplace else? Or ones I actually still have in my possesion? Should I always 'grab' all the TBs in every cache I come to, so I get credit for them? Any help on this would be appreciated...Thanks...checker111
