  1. Back in Burlington at a different time of the year. I wrote this post a few years ago but I sure would like to hear from other cachers what must do caches they have given a favourite point to, or loved to find. What interesting caches or areas! We like all types of caches ! Quick finds, hikes, puzzles, virtuals. Thanks for your help!
  2. Thanks I will try that. It is on the back of the sign so there isn't any paint just the plain steel. I appreciate your response. Christine
  3. Why don't you do a search for some of the main places you would go through, Dawson Creek, Fort St John, Fort Nelson and then look for some favourites. Bring up the map and look at all the caches that are along the Alaska highway. I know there are some in the pullouts along the highway. I have one at a pullout just past Charlie Lake going up to Fort Nelson. About Mile 58 on the highway. Bug on a Fence. I know there are more. I plan on driving up the highway a bit to drop off some travel bugs that I need to go to Alaska. Good luck! Have fun!
  4. I went to one of my geocaches to fix it as there was a post saying the log was full. When I got there, my daughter ran ahead and I see she is making a strange face. I am thinking of the cache is lost. It was hidden behind a sign. She comes to the car and says someone wrote on the sign Max and Echo July 9, 2013 and then an arrow pointing to the cache with the words Lame Cache. I was really upset by that! My daughter matter of fact says mom don;t let them get you down they are just negative people. I was wondering though if many others have had experience with people putting down the cache that you have hidden? I find that so rude. We tried to wipe off the words but I need some graffiti remover I guess and I moved the cache to the other corner of the sign. The cache was a chewed up rubber gum with log book inside.
  5. That is for sure! Always interesting in this geocache world isn't it!!
  6. That is interesting. Who would have ever thought that caches would get eaten!!
  7. I have wanted to do a cache like this too! I wonder, if it was a more natural predator! I am thinking maybe it was!
  8. That is too funny! Too bad there weren't hidden cameras set up to see all this action!
  9. LOVE These stories, glad I decided to post about our mushroom!!
  10. [ Generally, geocachers breathe a sigh of relief when they do not meet the bear whilst hunting our caches... This is Cindy Bear, from about 600'. She was not moving. I finally veered off to the left, and she went away. Bear are adorably cute, but they can be very dangerous. One local cacher will not do any of my caches in Mount Hope Historical Park because I've mentioned that Amparo Oso lives there. That's her prerogative. Amparo is a great bear! But I do not want to tangle with her. She followed me for a few hundred feet once, and I almost had a panic attack. I almost had a heart attack when I met Stumpy. (He only has three paws. The thought is that he got caught in a trap.) I guess I wasn't making enough noise. I came around a bend in the trail, and almost stepped on him! Missed him by about four feet. I couldn't move for about fifteen minutes! He took off through the mountain laurel. I felt sorry for him! Moutain laurel is really nasty stuff! (Though it is very pretty for about a month each year,) I think that is really interesting. We have a lot of bears up here in Northern BC as well. I go geocaching a lot with my 11 year old. I have been caching in the hills and have seen bear sign and then worry because I have my daughter with me and our Bernese Mountain Dog who people might even mistake for a bear! We bring along a whistle and whistle away if we feel nervous!!
  11. A few weeks ago we were out caching in the countryside where the series were "meat" related so good fun, a steak here a chop there and so on. The gps took us past GZ for some reason and when i looked down there on the ground a good bit away from GZ was a small rubber chicken which was. used for the cache but was empty, so we assume Mr or Mrs Fox thought it was chicken for dinner that night? That is really funny! And to think there are people out there that don't belong to this geocache world! Always interesting! I like the rubber chicken idea for a cache!
  12. I find that really interesting! After I picked up the mushroom, I smelled it to see what i smelled like. Nothing I could detect. I had it sitting in my car for a long time before the first placement, so I don't think there was any food smell. Who knows. We had a good laugh anyway. I should stalk up on this cache type in case it gets chewed again. Thanks for all the replies it is interesting to see what goes on in the geocache world! Now if someone would just pick up our first owned trackable and get it on its way we would be really happy!! Happy Caching!
  13. Today my daughter and I had to go pick up a geocache we placed to move it as it was just too close to another one of our caches. We had placed it then went home to double check the distance rule! Anyway we had to go back to retrieve it. We get to the site and my daughter can't find it. So I go out. The cache was a little mushroom. I had it at the base of some willows and covered up with leaves. When I got there it was uncovered and when I picked it up I noticed little teeth marks! some animal was trying to eat my cache! It uncovered the leaves hiding the mushroom and there were a number of little teeth prints on the one side! guess the little rodent thought it was getting a good treat. Sorry guy no mushroom for you today! I wonder how many other caches out there have been "eaten"!!!
  14. Okay so I was reading more and the only thing I have found that works is go to the geocache I am interested in. Open it up. Download gpx file to my desktop. Drag it to the garmin showing up as an external drive. But then I had to go into that garmin drive and move it to the gpx folder. Crazy. Only took me 40 minutes to do all that for four caches. There must be a simpler way. Too many clicks and drags.
  15. Sorry I figured out PQ is pocket query. So I tried that and it didn't work. Is this something that is going to be fixed because I just went out and spent money on a Garmin so I could go to geocaching.com and load my geocaches. I am wondering why this isn't working? Whose end is the problem? Garmin? Or Geocaching.com? If you could help me specifically with the steps how to get this loaded on my Garmin that would be great
  16. Hi I just got my new Garmin etrex 10 in the mail and I am having the same problems. I have a MAC and had to install this communicator, which does not work. I do not know what you mean to run a PQ and copy it to the GPS. Can you explain this to me. All I want to be able to do is go to what geocache I want on my garmin and click on the link beside the cache name and have it work. Help please. Explain what you mean-run a PQ?
  17. I will second the suggestion for the caches in Niagara Glen. It is a great area and very close to the Great Wolf Lodge - I've been to the lodge several times with my kids. Before I started geocaching I had no idea that you could actually walk down into the gorge! There are stairs at the Glen that will take you down to the gorge. My favourite cache in the Glen is Niagara Gorge, as it is right along the edge of the river. Thanks we are headed out to Niagara today to go to the lodge. I picked out a few caches to do and an earth cache. I will add that to my list! BTW There is a blazed trail from that cache to the Whirlpool, takes you to Melinda's House cache. Which is disabled but it's there. There's a staircase that leads out of the Whirlpool and pops up not far from Gnome's Hideaway. Melinda's House is nice because you are right at the river level where the Whirlpool heads downstream. Quite the epic place to sit for a bit. I took a walk around the Whirlpool while I was there - here's a photo from it. ... and some from the other side of the Whirlpool.... Wow that river sure is moving when you are that close! Thanks for the advice! I am looking forward to finding the caches.

  19. We actually like both types of caches! The thing about Niagara though is we would prefer urban hides because we are mainly going to Great Wolf Lodge when we are there but the kids love to do some geocaching while we are in between swims. We went to see the Gnome's hideaway and the kids loved that one. We also try to do some earth caches as well. IN Burlington, Oakville area we have a bit more time. Today we went all around LaSalle Park. Thanks for messaging back! Much appreciated. I really enjoyed the caches about a week ago in the Niagara Glen park, just north of Great Wolf Lodge. You can get right down to the river there (safely( Last time we were there we did a number of caches around GWL. We particularly liked Gnome's Hideaway! That was a good one. We also enjoyed doing a few of the earth caches too!
  20. LOL hey that is okay. We usually get to Ontario in August and on rare occasions like this year December. Where is Elk Valley? (is that Fernie? My cousin loves Fernie) August is in mosquito season, but they are preferable to blackflies... ha! You got it right... The Elk Valley is home to Fernie to the south, Sparwood in the middle and Elkford (home) up in the north end. The south easterly corner of the province (almost in Alberta). Nice quiet area, but just starting to accumulate geocaches in increasing numbers. We all make the odd trip over to the Crowsnest Pass and Alberta beyond that to the east and over to Cranbrook / Kimberley and the rest of southern BC to the west and northwest. I'm actually born and raised in Toronto, but that was pre Geocaching. This is something I got into out here. Enjoy your trip... at one point I was working in Stony Creek near there. Doug 7rxc Merry Christmas! I just started geocaching myself in August. I just love it. I have placed four of my own in Fort St John. I am originally from Ontario and headed out west for a teaching job. I get back to Ontario once or twice a year if I am lucky. My cousin actually lived in Fernie for a bit and he just loved it there! I hope to get to more places in the province to geocache and also into Alberta as well since we are so close! Merry Christmas. Thanks for the messages.
