  1. I have the set up you speak of, and as Cache R Joe said, with the button attached to the unit, it goes into its cradle with some effort. I would not however modify the cradle to make its operation easier. Let it do that its self over time. I have found that it is a technique to get it in and out ( so to speak ), and it not a real problem to learn to do with the mount installed. RAM has designed the cradle with an arch in the back to give you more leverage and it does work. Id suggest putting a little time in it before filing it down.
  2. I see. Thanks for the clarification. A $100 NPS licensing fee might be tollerable, but more than likley disproportionate. Id figure most cachers are not in a position to see the benefits of it. By that I mean, in order to see any return on your investment, the individual would have had to place caches in many state's Nat'l Parks, and maintain them. Private jet to Shenandoah? Not I. Not, yet. I see it as taxation without representation. We must keep an eye on it.
  3. $100 dollars to geocache in national forests! Just in Georgia! Don't think I'd do that..might set a precedent. Actually when I put my first geocache in a N.Y. state park there was some mixup and I was told it would cost $10. Well after some discussion the ranger realized that there was no cost..at least not yet although he wasn't ruling it out for the future. I remember reading a book about a conservationist who lived and was very active in the Adirondack State Park organizations. The biggest problem she said was one of balancing the forever wild with park use/enjoyment and needed income. Unless I've misunderstood you, 'Just in Georgia!' isn't nice to say. Georgia is gorgeous from what I've seen. That aside. You're right, a precedent of the like that is not a good idea. You have got me thinking about pay per usage as potential NPS revenue source. One that we may come to expect in the future. Parking passes or fees already exist. Imagine being a registered hiker; or Nature Offender (let alone cache/trash hider). Sick as that thought makes me, I fear its coming. It does need vigilance on our parts to keep reasonable land usage for ourselves and future generations. But then, where does the maintenance revenue come from? Why wouldn't it make sense to tax the user, proportionately, to their usage?
  4. Im not sure whether to add some inane comment, or truly tasteless joke. I think the greens concerns are not with out merit, but any ignorance can be fought with education. Their point of abstention is ludicrous. Did I not just see over the summer a study regards NPS patronage in decline? Something along the lines of "What has become of the great American Summer Vacation. Where mom dad buddy and sis would jump in the car and tour our great national treasures". Im sure there are those who are quite happy with that reality. Im not. An analogy might be: like your muscles or your minds, use them or loose them. My ¢.02 on this silliness is, if we were to cater to the 'National Parks are to be preserved ad-infinitum as an untouched pristine environment' it wont take too long for the public consciousness to forget that the parks are treasures and see them as a resource for energy, logging or whatever else. Use of the public park lands keeps the public mindful of what they stand to loose. Silly greens.
  5. I took the '60 out for the first time on Saturday. Such an inconvenience as a lack of Caps Lock is nothing in light of how cool this thing is. I'll live with it, and submit my suggestions to Garmin. Thanks all. Happy Holidays to you.
  6. Does anyone have a recipe for roasted snow ticks they'd like to share? something so rare must be a delicacy!
  7. Bummer to hear about your GPS and your ride. Not a good day; I hope your friend is OK. Try to remember, its just parts. Friends cant be replaced. As for the screen look up Novus. They make a plastic polish that is awsome ( I use it on my faceshields ), but they are also auto glass repair. They maybe able to help. Good luck.
  8. Yes, mine will do that too. The search is not case sensitive.; thats all good. It is just if there were a number in the waypoint, and the GPS is in lowwer case, its an extra set of rocking the user has to go through to get back to upper case to enter numbers in the search field. No biggie, just a drag.
  9. Its like the computer screens in the movie Brasil.
  10. I just got a 60CSx. Great device. My question is about using the find function for waypoints. Mine seems to drop to lower case letters after the first character is entered.Thats nice, but Id love to have a Caps Lock. Most of my waypoints, like yours Im sure, have numbers too. And its tedious to rocker over to 'Caps On'. I see that GSAK has a send to device all caps check off box, but Im not sold on GASK; Im still in awe of everything else between Topo and CityNavigator wow. So, I have yet to find a preference for this. Is this an issue for anyone else? I know Ive got issues... but I didnt count on this one.
  11. Ive 'unintentionally' followed a previous cachers tracks to an FTF potential once... Seconds aren't bad. So dont discount snow caching, it has bebefits too.
  12. Empowered you say? Indeed, I did. I just got a 60CSx. A very cool tool to say the least. Not being one to slouch on the tech front for too long anyway, I tought Id toss the dice and see if my 15" IntelMBP would "see" the GPSr. Lo and behold! in both MacGPS Pro, and in Mapsource via Win XP Paralells, complete transparaency! Pinch me Im dreaming. IT ALL WORKED!? uh huh. VERY COOL. No more serial interfaces? Not if I can help it. Loading TOPO Maps, Waypoints, GSAK etal. Mac users know what hurdles Im writing of. The downside to the happiness is the outlay; mondo dinero. But its all over now. What else was I goint to spend it on? My kids college? AS IF. Sorry, I ve just got to bask in the light.
  13. Well, Im in for the 60CSx I didnt want anything else really. Except for Daylight Savings time to return.
  14. Probably not me. Although I get good feedback on one or two of mine; I think I might get lynched for one or two of my others. Come to think of it Id say Ive got a .660 avg THATS BIG LEAGUES! shameless selfpromotions... Id say, its hard to say who has a knack for hiding things well around here. Guile is not a great part of the game in these parts. Its more like hike for some time and root around like a pig for truffles. Or, go find some oddity in the town, and wade through a hellscape of PI. I dont mean to sound bitter, but Ive not found too much creativity yet. Some puzzles are well thought out. Most hides are straight forward find the X. There is one cacher who consistantly challenges me. TeamKwikSilver. OMG, the torment... I love it. Nasty little nano caches... Horrific, inhospitable hiding places... MORE DNFs with this one hider than all others combined. id have it no other way! So there you have it: TeamKwikSilver. Now if only they would respond to email questions for hints...
  15. Thanks for the update Hermit Carbs, I didnt really think that through. Ive not heard of Permethrin, but it sounds like it goes on clothes. Do you wash your treated garments separately?
  16. Tell me again why you would apply this stuff to your skin directly? Having had a run-in with DEET a few years back, I'd never apply something like that on my skin; or yours for that matter. WalMart can keep shoveling as far as Im concerned; a quicker way to Hades for them I say. No dime of mine in their coffers.
  17. Having found quite a few FTFs myself ( for the body of finds that I have ). I would wish I'd have your restraint at such times. Thankfully, Ive not had times like that. I applaud your decision; thanks for keeping an eye on the bigger picture than the individual prize.
  18. Hi, I 'cache with a Rino 130, and often go with another Rino users. They have 120s. We have availed our selves of a great feature of units; that being contact updating on screen. Having the cache position, their position and mine, I get a pretty good triangulation to the hide. Ofcourse, this means little if there is only one Rino... But you mentioned hunting; it is hunters who find this GPSr most useful for the above stated reason. But isnt geocaching hunting? Hmmmm. As far as the 110 goes, its just a scaled down version ( memory and # of waypoints and tracks ) of the 120. Its quite usable for geocaching, but I think your maps are not going to look as cool as your eTrex.
  19. Im ambivalent to puzzle caches. I neither go out of my way for them, nor run from them. Ive placed one, or rather I encorporated one into a multi of mine. One of the caches stages became problematic, first was the police, then with muggles. At first, the stage was a magnetic, then PD got involved... questions... forget it. I reluctantly moved the stage, which burned because I really wanted to share this spot with the caching community. Well the secondary spot got muggled, ( Cheers to Harry Dolphin and Andy Bear for plunging on toward the last stage anyway! Yes, through persistance, they found it. ) Anyway, I found the only way to make this work was to do a number puzzle. Further, I see puzzles that are good require a bit of forethought. Most are not all that good. Like mine. Mine was ok, not great; nor hard. There is a dark irony involved. I was happy.
  20. For what its worth, I was " immune" to the oil for the longest time. That was until my 28th year. An unreal reaction. i used to be able to pull it out of the ground by hand; my dad was able to too. Anyway, I had heard from a few sources ( hows that for reliable ) that the human bodies chemistry 'changes' every 7 years. What ever 'changes' may mean, I'll not soon know. I do know that magic multiple changed my mind about that scourge, and I avoid it. I also rant about its presence around caches if its obviously out of hand. I've seen ammo cans hidden in the root cavities of trees absolutely over run by PI; the caches were recently found too! Those poor devils must've worn Tyvek suits to get to their "prize".
  21. Mine have been posted quicker than Id expected in the last two instances. 1 day for each. I foolishly, thought Id have time to get to the hides before the FTF, so as to 'finish it off' All this begs the question ' you put out an unfinished cache?' well, yes, sort of. I meant to get a nice FTF prize for them, but found my offerings lacking, and went for something better. Suffice to say, I thought Id had more time... Which by the way, is a good life lesson right there. Carpe Diem. or is it carpe cache?
  22. I know of a $50 rebate for the 60 Csx until some date in Dec. Which makes it tempting for me. Ive been a rino user now for some time; its very usefull when caching with another rino user. So, why not carry both?
  23. Does the external antenae on the 60 series provide better reception than the 70 series? I had heard musings about in the past regarding not these units, but GPSr design in general. Or has the SiRF chipset answered that?
