  1. Not that I'm complaining or anything, and I'm certainly for an NZ GPS Society, but why do we need a seperate discussion area outside of Groundspeak as well? This forum seems to work well, it's the first place foreign geocachers would look for NZ info, and you can search across all Groundspeak forums for generic geocaching topics. Are the society forums aiming to replace this forum, or do we now check two message boards? Auckland Kayakers Group: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/auckland-kayakers
  2. I'm in. Let me know if you need any help with setting this up. I've been through this before setting up CoastBusters and I'm currently prez of Auckland Canoe Club. Cheers, M@ Auckland Kayakers Group: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/auckland-kayakers
  3. I will generally remove matches from a cache planted in bush, especially dry bush. You never know who will stumble on a cache - geocacher or not, kid or not. Auckland Kayakers Group: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/auckland-kayakers
  4. quote:Originally posted by ariwa:Actually this has crossed my mind before.. Not necessarily to reward those who find a really difficult cache, but more for the sake of a cache with items of higher value.. A pre-requisite to visiting the cache would be that you would have to leave an item of the same or higher value (well, roughly) than what you took.. I placed Walk the Pipe! with this intention, and I thought 'swap for equal value' was a given - but it doesn't seem to work (apart from the backup tapes - thanks Steve ). Maybe the 'equal swap' needs to be stated explicitly. Auckland Kayakers Group: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/auckland-kayakers
  5. Geees, just when I thought I'd knocked 'em all off and wouldn't have to go up there again for a while . We could 'make our marks' as it were while visiting, but we may have to get you guys to verify their status now and again. Auckland Kayakers Group: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/auckland-kayakers
  6. quote:Now those Whangarei caches, most were placed by two different cachers. One of them I have no idea how to contact, the other fortunately I have an updated e-mail address for. I can understand Peejay losing interest - the scene just wasn't active enough up there until very recently. It was such a long time before anyone found some of his caches. Pity as Manaia Mania, Kai Iwi cache #1, and Kai Iwi cache #2 are really cool caches to visit. quote:The other cache simply appears to have the wrong co-ordinates, I understand the hints are accurate and a number of people have found it ok using the hints. One cacher suggested perhaps it was a Geod49/WGS84 error. Don't know, but I saw Waatz's GPSr setup. It's a huge thing that he carries in a backup with a huge aerial. I was curious about the Geod49 datum, but that didn't seem to match up. It fits in with the type of work he does though. Auckland Kayakers Group: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/auckland-kayakers
  7. quote:Yeah Dan had a problem for a while with the 'hidden' caches - you can check what he has on file from you (using 'User' page) and update it using the 'Missing Logs' page. The counts given in the summary don't seem to add up to what's in the log list for me. I've tried to add a missing log but it doesn't seem to take it. One Year

I found out about geocaching from an article in a club orienteering magazine about 2 or 3 years ago. At that time there were only a couple of caches in Auckland. I must have got the co-ordinates mistyped for Aukland Stash back then 'cause I remember hunting for it in the central city ! Obviously I didn't find it, wasn't too impressed with my 8 channel multiplex GPSr going all over the place, and lost interest. Early this year I was at a sea kayaking symposium where one of the sessions was on using GPS. I remembered geocaching and brought this up. I found then how much it had grown and tried again. My first find was Cathedral Cove and have been looking for them ever since. M@ Auckland Kayakers Group: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/auckland-kayakers

I suppose I should look at the fullers timetable and work out how I can fit that in. It would be good to be able to acheive it in a daytrip. Even better if I could find the Coastal cache on the same day. You could take the 11am ferry from Auckland and get the cache in time for the 2.20pm sailing from Rangitoto. Also the 1pm from Auckland and 4.20pm return would work. That should give you time to find another cache afterwards. I'm looking at doing a northern reccy myself. Don't forget guys, you could always have a contest to see who can put in the most caches too Well, for a short sweet while there I was ahead of both of them , but it seems they've caught up already . Some of their finds no longer exist so it'll be hard keeping ahead of them M@ Auckland Kayakers Group: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/auckland-kayakers

  14. I like the idea too, and would like to be kept in the loop, so to speak. I am a programmer, but not so much in the modern languages. Keen to see how this would be done. Cheers, M@ Auckland Kayakers Group: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/auckland-kayakers

  18. OK! I've managed to borrow a GPS12 so I can see all this for myself. I suspect there's no comparison to my 45XL though! Auckland Kayakers Group: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/auckland-kayakers

quote:I think my little yellow eTrex must be the worst case around Nuh - My Garmin 45X can only track 8 satalites, which gives me less options in the bush. quote:Signals getting through gaps in floiage cover will come and go as the satellites change position moving through their orbit. It's true - when I've hardly had any signal at one time, it's been great at another time. I check the satalite positions display my GPS gives me before I go out bush.
