This might be the inner genius fighting with old man common since. It sounds like a great item, but if you think about it and what harm it might have it is a better choice to not use this type of cache.
I think that cachers need to be responsible for their caches. They also need to use common since when it comes to what and where they are placing. I think it is a bad idea to use something that looks like a birds nest as a cache. This goes against caching lightly. It is very easy to believe that someone would start looking in all the nest if they found one cache there.
So as a responsible cacher I would not use something like a birds nest as a place to hide a cache.
Good Try

The Glad containers don't hold up very well.
Yea, that is why they are good for temp containers. These are just quick fixes untill we can log the cache needs to be worked on. We don't go out looking to replace broken caches. It is just nice to keep a cache alive and hold them over untill the owner can make it out to the cache.
Thanks

Are there any other GPS units that you would recommend?
You will find a lot of cachers use the Garmin GPSmap 60Cx or one in the "60??" family. The Colorado is relatively new and is a top of the line sort of unit when it comes to features. Garmin also has the eTrex series that are basic units that are a good starting point for geocachers. If you upgrade in the future you always have a backup unit, or one to lone out. It just depends on how much you want to invest in a new hobby? I bought a gps not knowing what geocaching was. After playing a while I have upgraded to a 60Cx.
As for MAC caching goes... you are just in time. Two years ago you would have been on your own, but some of the software companies have started to work with MAC systems in mind. Check out MacCaching for a great piece of software. Others are also catching up. In fact you can find Garmin's map installer at : http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=3825
If you are looking for more information you can check out some podcast about the sport of Geocaching. I recommend the Podcacher Podcast. They can be found at www.podcacher.com.
Hope this helps & welcome to caching

The one thing I ALWAYS keep in my pack for cache repairs is a micro with log. If you find a wet/damaged cache you can sign the log in the micro and toss it in almost any other cache. I used to carry the match safes but am switching over to preforms. I'm gonna give 'em a try and see how it works out.
Before today I had never seen the PREFORMS. They look like they would be great and at a good value. How well do they work in the field?
Thanks

As a chronic holder of TBs I don't mind at all when someone emails and says hey can you move mine along.
It helps when they ask nicely, but it reminds me that I need to get the TB on its way. I would look at the holders stats. If they are out there caching and not placing your TB you can kindly ask them to move it along.
I do have to agree with BlueDeuce about letting it go. It is a bummer when you have spent money buying the bug and the time creating a goal that is unique just to find it it being held buy someone else. That is just part of the game we play.

On my 60Cx I use the City Navigator. It is the pre2008 map set. Your device will take the NT but it will take a bit longer to refresh. I am told the disadvantage with non NT is it takes up more room. My non NT map sets work good and with a 2GB card I can place more than I need to on the card.

I have been caching for the last few years, but I am new to the forums.
Correct me if I am wrong but are you actually saying that people print out the page of every cache they are going to hunt for?
Thanks

......"You take all this with you, and you want to carry more?? Just how big of a backback do you have? "
I don't want to carry more. I just would like to know what some people find useful. I figure one item might be used a lot in a colder climate as another might be used better in a wet, or a very hot climate.
It seems that geocaching is the same in a lot of ways and very deferent in others when you look at where people cache. If I travel three hours away from my home you can see a totally deferent mindset in what people use for containers and how they hide them.
In our area there are just a few caches that are over a 1/2 mile hike. So for the most part are cache repair kit stays in the car. We do carry a few small items with us but as for replacement containers they stay in the car.
Thanks

We are looking for items to place in our Geocache repair kit.
When we are out caching we take a few items to help mend broken caches, or replace a log that is trashed. Here are some of the items we take in our bag. Please ad anything to the list that you would find helpful.
- Zip lock baggies
- Tape
- Pins and pencils
- Spare Container - Small - Glad Tupperware like
- Spare Container - Regular - coffee can
The spare containers we take out are not meant for permanent cache. We do this as a temporary fix until we can notify the cache owner and they can replace the cache.
Let us know

If you were not wanting to change the datum in your unit you could use a converter such as the one found on http://home.hiwaay.net/~taylorc/toolbox/ge...phy/geoutm.html
That works or there are multiple others online.
But coggins is right, it is easier to change your device setup. Here is how:
On your unit go to the menu
Next click on Setup
In the Setup menu click on Units
You will not be in the section to change you Datum
The Datum will be the second space. Choose WGS 84 and you should be good to go.
Hope this helps

Has anyone seen a cache made from an box made by Action Products? I found one the other day at Academy. They look like the old school ammo can but they are made of plastic. If you would like to see one click here. LINK
We bought one to use it as a cache. After further inspection it seems like it might leak although the manufacture say it is watter proof.
Just wanted to check to see if anyone had come across one of these in the field?
Thanks

Have you ever gone for a cache that you have already found and not been able to find it?
We pulled this one the other day while taping for the show. We went to a cache that we knew was there. We had actually been there a while back so we should have known exactly where it was. Well as luck had it we were not able to locate the cache before the sun went down.
That night I pulled up geocaching.com and found that yes the cache was still there, and that someone came that day and found it right after we were there. We felt so small when we read the comments they left. It was something like, "easy cache, we found it at night"
Oh well you can't find them all.

Welcome to Geocaching.
You might want to quit before it is too late and you get consumed by this hobby. No really, this is one of funnest things I have ever come across.
If you don't want to go for the premium membership what you can look for is "Park and Grab" caches. People might also call the P&G. These are easy to get and they don't make you go hiking to get them. Your NUVI does not have a huge battery but you should do great getting to caches and back to your car.
Good luck on your first hunt.

With my beat up units I have sent to Garmin they have been very helpful.
My first trip to service was due to the fact the unit would not sync up to my computer anymore. It was under warranty and Garmin just sent me a new unit once reviewing the one I sent them.
Next, after my warranty ran out, I demolished the cover to the LCD screen. I called to see if I could just get a screen cover replacement and they told me to send the unit in. I was not wanting to spend more to repair the unit that it was worth. I asked them if I could put a limit on it and they said they have preset limits for all the devices. If your repair goes over the preset limit they will just replace your unit for the limit cost.
By the way, each unit Garmin services has a deferent limit for repair.
Hope this give you a heads up.... Can your dog sit down yet?
Thanks

Along with my wife we own and operate Big Box Pro Video Productions
Most of the time we are shooting commercials, depositions, and weddings. This year we have decided that we would like to do some more geocaching so we invented a great excuse... a video podcast?
So we are now amateur podcasters and love it.
Thanks

Come on Groundspeak!
Geocachig show be about creating something fun for people of all ages, size, and color. There has always been a part of the caching process that is innovative and requires some personal reflection. Just because someone wants to post a cache with a certain description or theme does not mean that Groundspeak has to have the same ideas.
Each cache so be able to speak for it self. If some one does not want to support the troops, or support that cache... then don't go looking for it.
Oh yea, if you are going to remove the personal identity from geocaching then you might as well remove all of the geocoins because we all know that there are coins out there that represent an idea or an organization and we would hate for some one to be an individual in the world.

We have started shooting a video podcast here in the United States. We would like to offer content from all over the world not just the US. You can find it at www.LetsGoCaching.com
The reason I am posting in the Australia section is that we are looking for people to send us clips from around the world. Nothing professional just a small clip so the world can see what is going on in Australia. From the Podcacher podcast I have heard that there is some great geocaching in Australia.
We are looking for:
- Good hunts
- events
- news
All you would need to do is introduce yourself and what cache you are going for. Go hunt for the cache and show a bit about it. Sign the log and replace the cache. It is all pretty simple.
If you can help in anyway please let us know
Thanks

It's a term that, if you have all your adult teeth, should never cross your lips. If it ever does, expect those around you to place their fingers in the shape of an "L" against their foreheads.
Seriously.
Thank you, thank you, thank You! Finally someone who gets it.
Does anyone have a better name to use for people who do not know what geocaching is?
Thanks

There is not a group south of San Antonio. If you would like we can start one.
I know that Bro_ray was hosting a few events every year. I emailed him this week and he is not caching at this time.
So lets get something together soon.

The amount your device can hold will all depend on how much data is in the quadrant on the map.
Another thing you might try is go get a bigger card... That is if you have a spare $40 hanging around. For a while I did the geo-juggle with maps and waypoints on my 60Cx. Once I finally broke down and purchases an upgrade card it solved all my problems.
The unit will hold up to a 2Gb card. For me it hold the United States maps, my regional Topo maps, and all the waypoints I could ever imagine.
Just my 2 cents
