  1. Yeah, I thought the general rule was "If it's in the south, do it on Memorial Day before it gets too hot. If it's in the north, do it in July so the snow can melt." Not familiar with the climate in Maryland, so maybe July would have been too humid? Or, maybe it will just become a May thing all the time now. Regardless, I hope I can make it. It will be my fifth. I haven't made it out since Sellersburg and I miss it. Luckily this is a nice memorial day weekend.. its going to be in the mid 70's especially up in the mountains area. Also some years it gets in the 90s. So this year we got real lucky and was able to have nice weather. Also going back to previous post in order to host a Geowoodstock you would need a GW committe of folks from the area and submit the bid. We submitted our bid back in 2011-2012 and learned we won for 2015...
  2. Nothing unique we gave credit where we saw the caches..
  3. It was the same cache and same type of container... A couple of things. Some people will only look for certain types of caches, unless they have the opportunity to get a FTF. If the cache doesn't appeal to them otherwise, they may just walk past it to get to one that does. Not everyone feels that the have to find every cache. As far as placing caches to pay back for the ones that you have found. It is a really bad idea. Looking at your profile, you have been a cache owner long enough and hidden enough to know that while being a cache owner can be very rewarding, it can also be a major pain in the butt. Asking someone to hide a cache when they know that they are really not up to the task of following through with all that it takes to own a cache, isn't fair to anyone. In fact, it is why Groundspeak discourages caches that ask the finders to place caches after finding them.
  4. This guy is so warped in the FTF that he complained once because the FTF on cache didn't log they found it nonlinear and he couldn't read the handwriting and cussed out the owner even when the owner was present when the FTF found it....
  5. Do you like challenge caches? Yes or no? We placed at least 3 challenges on our NYTPT series ALLStarz Challenge - Saw in Indiana during Geowoodstock Birthday Challenge - Saw in Ohio during Midwest Geobash Well Traveller's Challenge - Saw in Virginia during Hampton Roads What challenges do you have that are unique?
  6. Thanks for the advice. It does bother me a little... Here is another question about this FTF hound... He has over 1000 finds, hidden 1, adopted 2 and has over 240 FTF's... The thing that bothers us in the Community on the Trail is that out of the Trail he has gotten 40+ FTF's on it and not a decent log on any of them, nor has he placed any that others can claim FTF on him. We have a trail here that is called the Chuck Co NYTPT Trail.. There is a total of 99.. Out of the last ones since the last challenge he was first on traidtionals and skips over the others. One time he walked past a cache that was already taken FTF on at the PARKING LOT(He already filled his calendar days) and walked the .10 of mile for the other one.. I guess its his gas.. Oh well thanks for the vent.
  7. Nothing. By any logical definition, the FTF goes to the person who signed the log FIRST. Illegal parking is a risk the finder took to get your cache first, not different than climbing a tree without safety equipment. I just hope the log was more than "Woohoo FTF! TFTC!" Nope most of the logs he writes are !!!!FTF #237 @ 8:58 a.m.!!!!! I saw this cache publish last night and knew I had to make the grab. TFTC
  8. In one of our caches that was published a few days ago. Well in the listing it says DO NOT PARK NEAR GZ or WILL BE TICKETED.. There is listed coords on the cache page on where to park. A second cache parked at the listed coords and started walking towards the cache, then noticed that the FTF hound was parked on the side of the road and was signing the cache and then left before the second cacher arrived at ground zero. So who is actually hte First to Find on this cache? The persno who disregarded the rules or the person who actually walked to the cache? We've been debating about emailing the FTFer and telling him he doesn't get FTF because he parked ILLEGALLY for the cache. He has done this for the past few caches on the trail. Its a bike trail only. and parked on the side of the road. What do you think should be done?
  9. 2007MGS 2007 Yes there was a picnic in 2007(http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=53ca7d28-7fe7-4431-bb42-a479a9e197ef). We've attendend all 6. It will be 4 years for the MGS Holiday Swap which started in 2009.
  10. There was a cache near us that was a 1.5/1.5 and when looked at it. It was an island cache and it was a 1 mile paddle. We emailed the new cacher with some help and told them that a 1.5/1.5 is usually a cache that can be done almost from walking up to it. And they changed it to a 1.5/5. I just don't believe a kayak cache should be a 3 terrian. If it is not accessible with out a boat and the only option to get there is a boat it should be a 5. If you can swim, wade or bushwack then a 4/4.5 terrian is better. When it says in the listing that a boat is required and only way then it should be a 5 terrian. if you can reach it from the boat then use the difficulty as a 1.5 or 1. We have a cache that is up a lamppost. Some people have climbed up there, some has used a hiking stick and even some had a fire fighter help them get the cache done. Therefore it was a 5 terrian since you need some type of equipment. It is a 1 difficulty because you can see the cache from the vehicle.
  11. My brother dbzdude just put out a series called the Namekian Dragon balls. They are all rated from a 1.5 to 4.5 terrian system. We have on that you must crawl in a tunnel to reach it. Therefore its a 4.5 terrian, but people can easily grab it from outside the drain and are making it come loose and complaining that the terrian is to high and it should be a 2. He also has another one that is a 1.2 mile hike uphill and downhill to a small trail. Once at the end of the trail you are still .10 from the cache on a inlet. There fore you must walk on a beach. Then you get to groundzero and must climb a tree since the inlet can flood therefore wading scomes in. And you climb about 5 feet up a tree to get the cache. And some one says that the terrian is a high on this cache and it should be a 2.5. What are you opinions? Also there are is now a series of 4 caches that are only accessible by kayak that are 4 terrians. But its only by Kayak. it kinds of through the purpose off. I helped a new cacher who had a kayak cache rated has a 1.5/1.5 and told them about pqs for people who wanted to do a power run and got to that cache and relaized they needed a kayak it would be disappointed so they changed it to a five and sent them the clayjar system. I wish Groundspeak wouldn't approve caches that are below a 5 with out special equipment.
  12. The Maryland Geocaching Society just celebrated its 10th Anniversary on August 4, 2012. So its been 10 years since for the MGS. And it will be our 9th year for our Annual CAM(Cache Across Maryland) in March.
  13. http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=7aa82dfa-2bdb-4af4-85e8-981ba90d4793 this is another cache in atlantic ocean here in maryland been out there for about two years now with no finds.
  14. So I run the stats through Mygeocachingprofile.com and it says that we have 3040(3039 Distinct) caches. I know that we haven't double logged on any caches. We did find a cahe in Oregon at Geowoodstock 5 called Keep It Moving? Sand tahts the only caches we can think of since it doesn't show up in our stats. When I look at other cachers who have double logged it says on their profile page 727 but when I click on the Geocache Finds it says 724. So I know there are double logs somewhere. When we do it to ours it says 3040 and it stays 3040. Could Keep It Moving? (A Movable Cache) be our Distinct cache that could through the numbers out of wack. You can take a look at our profile if you like.
  15. i'm looking for the thread that if you look at caches in google maps it spells soda or the has the smiley faces. they are both in the same thread. thanks.
  16. That would make for an interesting argument for someone trying to enforce that policy: SECURITY DUDE: "Sir, you are not allowed to swim in this pond, per Homeowner's Association Rule BR549" CACHER: "Dude, I wasn't swimming. I was wading." That would be really funning. Could you imagine? SECUIRTY DUDE: "There is also no wading allowed.: CACHER: "Dude, My boat sank to the bottom."
  17. I do believe that skill should be in the difficulty instead of the terrian rating. We did a cache that was a 1/4.5 but it says you may want a kayak but it is not needed since the cache is only 60 feet from the shore. And you can wade that is at least waist deep. Thats fine. My problem with this is that it says no swimming is allowed, therefore a boat is a must. Then it should be a 5 terrian. I have no problem if they mention swimming is allowed, i'm okay with the terrian, because technically if you are a swimmer you can swim to the cache, therefore no special equipment is needed. I know an owner of a cache did a 18 mile kayak trip that was a 2/5 and decided that his caches were over rated for the islands and dropped them to 3 terrian because they were only .4 from the kayak launch however there is no swimming involved or wading to the islands. These caches that i reference are in Delaware on a pond, but there is no swimming on the pond and any other access to the pond is private property. So in order to get the caches they require a kayak.
  18. Yes but theese cache says no swimming allowed, and you can only access this cache by boat.
  19. Should Kayak caches require to be a 5. Instead of a 4.5? I can see if its a 4.5 if 1) You can walk to the cache in the winter when it freezes 2) You can swim to the cache if swimming is allowed 3) You can wade to the cache if wading is allowed Could you imagine if someone who doesn't have a kayak wants to get a 1/4.5 and gets near the cache or learn you need a kayak for it. I mean we have a kayak, but not everyone does. Because there is a cache near us thats a 5/5 that requires you to have a stick and climb part of a tree to get the cache. If thats a 5/5 shouldn't a kayak cache be a 5 terrain since it requires you to kayak. And it says no swimming.
  20. Thanks for the replies. Its done with us, but now another friend of ours is in the same situtation. And its driving me crazy.
  21. It depends on whether or not this could be an FTF. Just kidding - I am a person of my word. If I said that I'd wait to do a cache with you, I probably would. But, I probably wouldn't say this - probably more along the lines of "sure, I'll do the hike with you," and if I found the cache, would go again. I've only asked one person to do one cache with me, and it was a 4.5 terrain, so both of us were kind enough to "hold off" and await a hiking partner. If he had decided to go it alone, then I could care a less, and in retrospect, probably would have shaved at least 2 hours off the expedition if I'd gone alone. In a very round about way, I suppose I'd answer your questions with "yes, I would respect your wish if you asked to do a cache together and wait," and "I personally would not ask anyone to wait, so 'right' or 'wrong' of asking is not relevant to me." Nope not for FTF's! Mostly harder terrian caches go with at least 1 or more cachers. Not solo on some of the harder ones. Even some longer hikes. We would respect people the cachers wishes if they asked. We did ask for them to wait on a few things, but they never did. So we don't bother ask them again.
  22. If you were to ask a geocacher friend to wait on a cache that you wouldn't to go after, would you respect the other person wishes or ignore it and just go after that specific cache? Its like asking a friend to wait on something and wouldn't a friend wait, or would a friend not ask someone to wait. If your friend felt very strongly about going after certain caches together wouldn't you repsect their wishes and wait until they could go? or not? Is it wrong to ask them to wait? We've had this happen to us a couple of times, we told them about certain caches and was hoping to go together for them, but they had free time and went for them without telling us they were going. Then after that we told them about this area and it would be cool to go after them together and guess what they did it again with out us.
  23. FTF could also be for Fourth to Find or Fifth To Find even.. In the owners post he was first to find on the cachers owners cache. We just had an event in our area and some people are claiming FTF on one cache, when us(the cache owner) was with 6 kids and a cacher that was FTF at least 1 hour before the 30 or so cachers claiming FTF on it. The kids had the gps and was ahead of the group and while I the cache owner stayed on the trail while the kids searched one of them came up with the find, opened the log book and signed it as First To Find. Right above the beta testers name. It was 12:39pm. There was no other signatures except the beta testers. Then later talking to the same group after learning there was a mistake in the printouts the coords were off, they said they didn't see any other signatures in the log book but the beta testers. But as the cache owner saw the group of kids and other cacher sign the log as First. This group says they found it as First to find at 2:05pm. Now the event started at 11:00am when the caches were givin out. What would you do in this situtation?
  24. We have a cache placed on both of our property. One is a multi that takes you to a store to gather information off the signs. Once you have it correct we gave a hint saying that its .12 away from and please park on the side of the road without the mailboxes. We did give notice to the two neighbors that were nearby. And they were okay with it. Another is a puzzle that the coordinates are at least .50 miles away. I(Beau) live on a dirt road that is 2 miles long. We put it in our mailbox in front of our house. Our new mailbox is at the end of the dirt road. So its an old mailbox. We did list our address on the cache name. Its my little brothers cache, but we co-own it. So its easy for people to get. We did leave a cache at the bus stop. But we gave the neighbors that there was a cache there. And they were like okay. I put a note of explaining geocaching and where the cache was located. All is fine. Although the multi we own is the only cache on the page that requires a person to find for the ADC Challenge we own.
