  1. My biggest complaint about micros is the lack of permission the hidding cacher gets before hand. I have been on a few that I have been approached by the owner or manager of the properity wondering what I am doing there. If the owner has a problem with it, I just leave and tell them that I will let the person who placed it know that the owner or manager wants it removed. There was a series of caches that I was workign on putting together with the local tourist person involving some war memorail(?) parks, only to have a cacher in another town drive by one day to throw a micro on a artilary cannon and screw the whole thing up. Did he have permission from the town to do that, no. And now the person that I was working with, thier boss (old enough to long retire some years ago) wants nothing more to do with it, because of the lack of respect of simply asking, can I do this. Any caches this cacher puts out, I refuse to find any more, my choice, I just don't like "drive by, hey I like that spot and let's throw a micro there", without taking a few moments to do it right and get some permission.
  2. Try out BeeLine GPS you can try it out free for 30 days. I use it and love it. It is a all in one package, meaning you can look up the cache details without switching to another program or having an internet connection.
  3. On my Dell Axim 51v with WM5 I am using BeeLine GPS with really good success. It is a all in one package.
  4. I carry a Berreta 96 Brig. with a set of Crimeson Trace Grips in my pack and I do have a CWP. However, my first choice is the pepper spray backed up by the 96. If the pepper spray does not stop the trouble then the 96 is ready. With the Crimeson Trace Grips, the question of can you shoot it straight becomes more of "see that red dot". I personally know a cop who has stopped a problem from going to any extreme because of the red dot. Better to try to deter if possible, but I am not going to put my life or others at harm if it comes do to it. I personally shoot several thousand rounds a year and have no problem with shooting anything that I choose to carry, if I choose to show it, then I am going to be sure that I can shoot it really good first. I have only had one problem in 15 years worth of hiking, only recently starting caching, and that was returning to the truck to find someone liking my radio better then thiers and did not feel like buying one. A loud yell and they took off, only to be found later by the police.
  5. I don't know if you use a mapping program like Delorme SA or Microsoft S&T. I get a PQ from geocaching.com and load it into GSAK, then I create the filter I want. Once that is done I then export a HTML file and the data file for the mapping program. Once you do that you can load your mapping program and see where the caches are and pull up the same page that you get from the website telling you about the cache, just not real time. I have played with Google Earth, but on a dial up connection it is ssllooww, so I went with the mapping software option.

I then plan my route based on the caches that I picked out and let the mapping program get me from cache to cache. Since I always travel with my laptop, I do a new PQ for the area before I leave and load the file to the mapping program. Yes, I do use a Dell Axim 51v in an Outterbox case with BeeLine GPS software, and a GlobalSat BC-337 GPS unit for a paperless solution all in one unit. But with the mapping software and your laptop you can do it without a PDA if you don't have one. Most of the times I have an idea about where the points of interest areas are and look on the mapping software for whats around.
  7. I am currently waiting on permission to place a cache where my father is buried. This cemetary has a gazabo in it and that is where the cache will be placed, and this cemetary is out in the middle of nowhere in the country. My job takes all over and I have found some cemetaries that really could use a cache with the note that says "if you look for this cache, please take a moment to do a little maintence and pay your respects". A lot of these cemetaries have been let go and need some help. So of the stones go back as far as 1890, and would be a shame to let them just disappear in the weeds. Some of them have weeds/grasses almost knee deep. My plan is that when I go to get permission and to place the cache is to take about an hour or two with my weed trimmer to start the process. Most of these cemetaries are little ones with about 50 to 75 graves in them and just need a little help and not to be forgotten. Just my thoughts.

  9. On my 51v I use a Global Sat CF BC-337 and Beeline GPS software. I use GSAK to sort the pocket queries from geocaching.com. You can export the data to a GPX file and then I just copy that file to my SD card. Then using Beeline you import the GPX file and get caching. Beeline will also give you the cache info so you don't have to use the Mobipocket file if you don't want too. I also use a Otterbox 1900 with the large pod to carry my 51v in for protection. Currently I have four location files loaded on my SD card for the areas that I travel holding about 1500 caches. Beeline GPS once you import the GPX file, you can do a search as to where the closes caches are to where you are at, at the moment. You can use Beeline GPS free for 30 days to see if you like it. I was using GPS Tuner, but found Beeline much better.
  10. DM, I hope that things will work out with this. I am in that area often and I stop when I can to enjoy the area and to find caches. I am also a hunter that has no access to private property to hunt, so I use the Game Lands as well as the DCNR lands. I can tell you from past experence on SGL 57, there are some hunters there that have hunted there every since they started hunting, and think that they own the place. I had a problem there before with being there long before they were, I was there in the morning and they showed up in the afternoon. And point blankly to me to leave "their" hunting area. This was in 04 and I have just stayed away from 57 since during hunting season. I have not had any problems though on SGL's 13 or 66. I did speak to a GCO about the group and he just pushed it off as "some people are just teritoral". And I was looking forward to exploring the area even more finding your caches. It's too bad that a few rotten apples have to spoil the fun and the area for the rest of us. If you need any help let me know and I'll do what I can.
  11. Montour County here, just south of I-80 right next to the Columbia/Montour county line.
  12. I use a Otter Box 1900 for my Dell Axim 51v. That thing is built soild. Since I use my PDA with a Gobal Sat CF GPS card, I got the pod for the top to hold the card, it makes a really neat package. It is not something cheap, but worth every penny when you consider the cost of the PDA.
  13. Got a few welding rod containers ready to go. I just wiped mine down with laquer thinner and then sprayed them with the Krylon Fusion paint. I also wrapped some with CamoClad for boats.
  14. I have been using BeeLine GPS software on my Dell Axim 51v. The software is designed just for geocaching. You can try out the sofeware for free for 30 days. BeeLine GPS I really like the all in one package, meaning that I can read the cache info, load the waypoints, compass, caches close to your present location. I do a bit of travel with me job and there are times that I have time to fill and I just pop in my GlobalSat CF GPS card and find the caches close to were I happen to be. I use GSAK to keep track of all the caches that I have loaded and then make a GPX file and copy that to my SD card in the Dell. I have tried GPXsonar and I just like BeeLine much better.
  15. I have this one: Heavy Armor 1900 the Axim fits right in it nice and snug. I have the regular battery but I carry a back up battery in the case with it. Before I put my Axim in it. I took the carry straps off it, put a rubber band over the plastic flip lid and ran it through the washer with cold water. There was no leaks and it stayed together. So after that I had no problem trusting it with my Axim.
  16. Appetite, I got the Otterbox for mine with the large pod to fit the gps unit. Those things are built tough. If you plan on using it a lot I would get an extra set of screen covers. I got mine from watertightcases.com Alan2, I do a lot of dirt road and trail driving in the North Central part of Pa.. There are some really nice mountain views as long as you can get there. Sometimes with the tree coverage and the mountain sides the signal can get weak. There are not too many caches in these areas yet, but that is going to be changing as time allows.
  17. Yea I know, I have used it both ways. The unit came with the remote as part of the package. I have found that it works better when traveling through wooded areas using the remote.
  18. I use a Global Sat BC-337 CF unit with my X51v unit. I went with the CF card rather then the BT unit, that way everything was all in one unit. It comes with a remote magnetic antenna for use in the car. I use MircoSofts Streets and Trips and import data from GSAK into S&T for general locations. I have been trying out GPS Tuner and BeeLine GPS to get to the caches. Of the two I like BeeLine a little better then GPS Tuner, it holds the cache data in the program rather then switching to Mobipocket.
  19. There are just a few things that I found out that wouls make it easier to use. Now that I am in MA, the signal/position function needs a way to copy the lat/long cords. to the location 1 postion and to the navigation screen. Also it would be nice to be able to run the filter with your current position, with the closet cache being listed first and going out from there. Since I do a bit a travel for work, this feature would make it much easier to hit caches along the way, by just finding your current location and filtering from there. Just my thoughts so far. Will be out on Saturday finding a few caches.
  20. So far on WM 5 on my Axim X51 the software seems to running okay. One thing that I do like over GPS Tuner is the description of the cache in one program. No switching to Mobipocket to read about the cache. I will be giving it a workout over the next five days while I travel from PA to MA and collecting caches along the way both ways. I will post back my findings mid next week. Thanks for the link about the NAD83 and WGS84.
  21. I have a Dell Axim X51v and am currently running GPS Tuner. One thing that I am looking for is more Datrum options. Currently it only supports WGS84. I would like support for NAD83 so that I can use The National Map. I can help you if you need it. Just let me know.
  22. Yep, I lurk, but that is how I figure things out. Once that happens the lurking stops and I pitch in when I can or have some other point of view.
