  1. Hopefully by now there's no confusion as to the legitimacy of the film. That being said, I hope everyone realizes that this is an INDEPENDENT film (ie. no big studio dollars and a very, very limited release). I, for one, would pay to see the film (probably a matinee though) because I'm a fan of both the subject matter and the genre. Obviously the game itself is a publicity stunt, but all the more power to them for being so creative. Not too toot my own horn, but I'm currently ranked in the top 50. I just wish I would have known about it sooner so I could have volunteered to hide a free cache. Hopefully someone else in Iowa did. Is it commercializing geocaching? Maybe, but it would seem no more than the JEEP travel bugs or project APE caches. (I haven't found any of them, but I hope to someday.) Is it shedding a negative light on the geocaching community? Perhaps, but remember that the creators have made a distinct effort to NOT refer to hunt as geocaching. Best of luck to the creators, and I hope it's a success. Yes, that water must be cold :-D Talk about irony. Tomorrow I will be going on a GPS hunt with my brother. His name? You guessed it... ANDREW. "I'M GOING ON A GPS HUNT...ME AND ANDREW!!"
  2. Map idea is great. I hadn't even thought of that. Thanks
  3. Dick, Thanks for the advice. I'm considering graduate work myself, and it's good to hear from another educator. We'll see how this project turns out... `Steven
  4. In case my username doesn't give it a way, I'm a senior undergrad at Iowa State University in Ames, IA. I'm studying to become an elementary education teacher in central Iowa. I'm in the process of finishing up my last year on campus, which brings me to my point: I'm in the process of creating a social studies unit for one of my classes on the subject. I would like to use geocaching as a theme to tie this all together. What i'm looking for is some idea as to how geocaching could be used to teach students social studies concepts. Keep in mind, social studies (for the purposes of this course) includes all of the following: history, geography, economics, anthropology, civics, and sociology. Here are a few of the ideas that I've come up with already to give you an idea of what i'm looking for: -- Connect geocaching to geography concepts: latitude, longitude, altitude -- Encourage environmental protection with the CITO practice (Civics) -- Field trip/nature hike/science experience to actually geocache (lots of areas) -- Geocaches near historical places and the history of those places (History) -- Costs of geocaching...(Economics) I've heard about a number of girl/boy scout troops who have gone geocaching, and was wondering how these experiences went? This weekend will actually be my first geocaching experience, weather permitting. I sincerely look forward to hearing your ideas, and perhaps connecting to any other teachers...thanks in advance!
  5. Greetings everyone. I'm new to the geocaching game and am looking for any and all advice on the matter. Started out with a minimal investment (Garmin Geko--$41 on ebay), but who knows where this might go. My wife and I plan to head out this weekend if the weather permits. In case my username doesn't give it a way, I'm a senior undergrad at Iowa State University in Ames, IA. I'm studying to become an elementary education teacher in central Iowa. As of now, i'm finishing my last semester of classes on campus, which brings me to my next point. One of the courses I am taking is entitled "Social Studies Methods." In short, it's a class on how to teach elementary social studies. One of our assignments for this course is to create a social studies unit that we can use in our future classroom. This unit must integrate other content areas (reading, math, science), and I think that geocaching is a great "theme" that can pull it all together. What I'm looking for is possible lesson ideas: what kind if things can I teach my students that can connect to any area of social studies (history, geography, economics, anthropology, etc.) I've heard of several boy/girl scout troops using geocaching, and I was wondering if anyone knew more about these experiences. To give you a vague idea of what I'm talking about, here's a few of the ideas I've already come up with... -- Connect geocaching to geography concepts: latitude, longitude, altitude -- Encourage environmental protection with the CITO practice -- Field trip/nature hike/science experience to actually geocache -- Geocaches near historical places and the history of those places -- Costs of geocaching... I look forward to hearing all of your ideas, and perhaps meeting some of you in the future. Wish me luck as I set out...
