  1. I put a bunch of caches on my ignore list today and noticed the Wherigo's remained visible. All the other ignored caches disappeared as expected. These particular Wherigo's were PM only. Searched in the forums to see if anyone had reported this as a bug and found nothing. Anyone else notice this bug?
  2. Many camera phones have the ability to geotag photos. I have to be careful I'm not using one on a puzzle or multi cache and inadvertently give away the location(s) in the exif file. The Nokia N95 is great for tracking hikes/fishing trips etc. Use Sportstracker and the geotag function to link track logs and photos plus share on-line.
  3. As already mentioned lack of acceptable battery life is a major barrier to using a PPC and BT GPS. More importantly is the lack of weather and shock protection of a PPC. A very capable GPS can be purchased for under $100 that is IPX7 rated and can survive a tumble or two. As an academic exercise I make an effort to geocache with every PPC, Symbian, Blackberry or Palm device I can get my hands on. But I get to choose the environment and once the experiment is over I go back to my trusty Garmin. YMMV...
  4. Post #61 suggested the fix would be going in the week after November 26th..... didn't see a reference to a year though
  5. This is a slippery slope. The newbie without enough experience may believe his/her hide is a good one only to get trashed by those that hold higher standards. I think you need to temper your critism with an understanding of the motivation behind the hide. By all means whack those that are disingenuous in their motivation for the hide and coddle those that are truly making an effort to contribute to the game.
  6. Everyday price is $179 at RadioWorld so sure it is a $10 savings (if CTC has it) but not 1/2 price. Also the unit is black & white and quite old.
  7. While it can be argued that "newbs" might not have enough exposure to know what makes a good hide - it can be problematic if their experience comes in an area of unusually low quality caches. I think what is most important is the motivation behind the hide. Many start out and find a number of caches and then want to give something back. Hopefully they have visited a good cross section and put out something worthy. Sadly however I have found that for many this game is all "about the numbers" and self admiration. Consequently some veteran cachers put out crap just to get a unique ICON in their profile. This scenario seldom happens with a newb who likely begins as a purist and unaware or uninterested in "the numbers". Just my opinion... and no intention to offend the guilty.
  8. First off, that was placed as a lame cache, thus the name of it. Second, this topic is not about lame caches as per the instructions in the original post. Please find one of the many other threads to make comments on lame caches. Can I use this forum to make comments on lame cachers? Awaiting your "instructions".
  9. Perhaps not a bug (as defined by some) but an annoyance - being able to log a find on your OWN cache!! We have one individual out this way that logs a find on his own cache EVERY time he takes someone out to show it. This fellow has more finds on his one and only cache than on all the other legitimate cache finds combined. I feel better now
  10. It's not always the newbs that put out lame caches. Old timers looking for that special recognition just might put out some "less imaginative" caches: Is this the model for "newbs"
  11. Hey Tequila work is based on REVENUE GENERATION not CUSTOMER SATISFACTION! Given their history with fixing then breaking things I doubt this is really FIXED!
  12. New to Linux today (Ubuntu 8.10). First thing I did after installing and updating was visiting this site.
  13. Visit your local Wal-Mart and look for clearance models. Each store manager has discretion to clear out old inventory and set the price. My local Wal-Mart had the Garmin eTrex Legend Cx for $100. A few other models as well for even less... Good luck.
  14. Cemetary caching is not a good idea, especially when it is clear that common sense is not used in placements and when to visit. We have a good game going here but will continue to see more and more restrictions imposed if we don't do a better job of policing ourselves.
  15. While I enjoy walking through a cemetary and taking in the rich history I don't need a geocache to get me there. For many reasons, some stated in this thread, cemetary caches are just a bad idea.

  17. Was just at the local Wal-Mart and see that they are clearing out the following notable GPS units: 2 x Garmin eTrex Legend Cx for $100 each 1 x Garmin eTrex H for $93 Some other units not worthy of mention. Happy shopping...
  18. By all means take a serious interest in the hobby, I do. But clearly I don't care about the numbers. I participate due to my interest in technology, exercise and a quest to visit places I may not have had an opportunity or inclination to see otherwise. All these things I do for ME and those that choose to cache with me. BTW this forum is for more than "a monument to facilitating the capture and documentation of numbers....." I believe it is also a place to share experiences and knowledge as well as debating points of view. Seems you weren't too happy with me providing mine. At the end of the day the "numbers" mean nothing - it is the EXPERIENCE that made that number. Peace
  19. Let me clarify - I do happen to know Kelly personally and perhaps by "inside knowledge" was speaking - I also think I know who he is referring to - and yes after a bad week and perhaps having a few things happen (both caching related & work) my view was a little tainted last night (and I don't need decaf I need a cold bottle of Bud on a warm back deck.. with my squirrel friends) I'm basically saying that if he isn't comfortable with it then don't do it. I'm also not saying there should be self imposed admiration, but simply that once in a while we should have the right to celebrate something we do and let that feeling of enjoyment be "pure" that you did it! Take for example a hike up the moutain - if you've put in 7 hours of hiking to get to the cache you can celebrate it - you've done it.. so if you can get internet up there and a person can see the cache through the webcam they should get to sign it as well? what's the difference if it's a puzzle cache the person could have put in 7 hours to get the final? (ok yes I know we can get off on a tangent - I'm not going there) - so I apologize if I came off a little strong - not the intention In the end it is just a game with meaningless statistics. Nothing we do in it should make us uncomfortable (except for looking for caches in inappropriate places but that is a topic for another day).
  20. You may wish to switch to decaf since you are taking this "game" way too seriously! I can see it now. A long time friend calls wishing to hang out. I tell him that I just solved a "really tough" puzzle and now want to hunt cheap plastic using a billion dollar satellite network (and I need to do it alone). All those that think human relationships should take a back seat to self imposed admiration need to give their head a shake!
  21. A pub night to celebrate a number what next? For as many times I hear it is "not about the numbers" I see that it is clearly about the numbers. Or maybe just a need to lead the chest thumping mutual admiration society?
