  1. True. The only way for it to display the name on the map is if you show it on the map from the POI page. Oz, what model do you have? The hover over works on my CSx just by browsing the map-- but it hasn't worked for many people on the boards. I'm trying to find the discrepancy. Here are screen shots of the popups when I'm browsing the map. Are you browsing the main map page or are you in the Find Custom POI page? I can see the one Custom POI name in the find screen map, but I can not browse my regular map and see things pop up. Perhaps it is because of the way I have GSAK set-up to create the poi.gsx file. What settings do you use?
  2. Yes. The way this is done is to create separate POI files for each category. Put all your custom POI files in the same folder. when you run POI Loader it lists each file as you click thru it and they all get loaded. When you do a Find/Custom POIs you can then select by Database (your files). I am planning on having a custom icon for each category... It has to be a *.bmp file correct? I got one to work with my Benchmark POI file so I have at least gotten that part of the equation down. I have not seen the name pop up when I scroll over the icon on the screen though, is that a new bug in firmware or what have I missed when I create the GPX file with GSAK? What size in pixels is the best for not cluttering up the screen too much? Is there a separate setting on the GPSr for when they show up on the screen or are they linked with all the other user waypoints? Also is there a collection of icons for caching that is available for downloading already out there? I don't mind little smiley faces but I was hoping for something more descriptive.
  3. Is it just me or do the Custom POI's not show their names when you put the cursor/pointer over them? I have reloaded my custom poi's 4 times. Tweaked GSAK so I have them coded with distintive names and I have created some custom icons so I can tell them apart, but the names do not show up on the screen. What am I doing wrong? (or is it a bug?) I am using 2.71... on a 76CSX
  4. Make certain you go up to the Garmin site and upgrade your mapsource software to the newest service pack releases. It fixes a problem with u/l to the new USB protocol that is in your new GPS... Then make certain you have done the same with your GPS and I think that your uploading problem will go away.
  5. Now that the firm ware will let us do it, can somebody point me to a FAQ or tutorial that will teach me how?
  6. Above is my test yesterday imposed upon a Google Earth image. Test ran for 14 hours, 76CSX... Glisson External antenna. Full lock on 8-9 sateliites. WAAS enabled. No WAAS lock during the time I monitored. The GPSr said I had an error of +/- 9 feet. It was sitting on top of a surveyed spot that is: N 41.54.697 W71.53.946 Altitude of 307.54 feet. Told me I was 45 feet from the BM. The average waypoint with some 5000 measurements was N 41.54.696 W71.53.947 Altitude of 318 feet. The first half of the log file is below... 7. We use the Gilsson antenna with our new 76CSX and yes it does make it work slightly better than without. Satellite lock is a bit quicker and the number of bars per satellite fix is more. Only had the 76CSx since April 1 so it is hard to say if it has made much difference in the field much yet.
  8. With my old Delorme GPS units as well as my old Palm based GPS I could log the tracks and navigate with my laptop. I am getting ready for a cruising trip in a small boat. Want to take advantage of a larger display in the cabin of the boat to track the trip and set proximity alerts for known reefs and sandbars for the trip etc. Sometimes there is no substitute for seeing things in a larger more detailed screen. Is there anything I should know ahead of time before I try this with my new 76CSX? Will the USB connector do what I want or do I need to purchase a serial connector? Will be using Blue Charts and am using beta 2.62 if that makes any difference.
  9. This was my test... I plugged my 76CSX into a Glisson Antenna. Provided external power. Got full 8 bar lock on 10 statellites and then left it sitting in position for 8 1/2 hours. Estimated Positional Error is saying +/- 9 feet. It too wandered, significantly more than my 76CS. Longest leg was 135 meters! Many legs of 20 to 30 meters. Lots more of 10 to 15. And yes, my reset odometer also logged in distance travelled, I wish I had saved a screen shot of that, but I did not. All while sitting dead still and full lock on all satellites each time I checked. The 76 CS in the same test, before I sold it was locked on 6-8 statellites. It did have a WAAS lock this was before Sat 35 was moved) and showed D's and Estimated Positional Error of +/- 12 to 15 feet. Longest leg was 20 meters and the cluster of legs recorded in the tack was so dense that it was very difficult to pick out individual jumps. The comparison with known bench marks has also been very disappointing. I have the benefit to having 3 adjusted benchmarks either on my property or on my walking route. With my old 76CS unit, I could go to the Benchmarks then do find for the Benchmark waypoints in my unit and get a real positional error of less than 15 feet each time. Estimated Positional error was registered at 10 feet or less. With the new unit, I can have it resting on the top of the Benchmark (3 different ones) and it consistently tells me that the BM is 50 to 75 feet away. (Yes I have changed the Datum) As I move in the direction of the pointer, the compass seems to get totally disoriented. Recalibration sometimes helps, but I can move in a circle around the bench mark and the pointer tells me that the waypoint is 75 feet way in several directions. All this is while the unit tells me that Estimated Positional error is less than 10 feet. If this were an actual bench mark search in the field such an error would have quadrupled my area of search over what I used to get with my 76CS. But as someone else said, in the field I got 3 caches fairly easily. Perhaps that is because with more experience once I am within 20 or so feet, caches are beginning to be mre quickly identified. I am beginning to wonder if the SIRF chip itself is prone to these wandering instability problems.
  10. When I try to reformat the card from what the PDA did, I get a different error message. "failure to complete format" At that point the only way to get information back on it at all is to stick it back into the PDA and let it format the card back to FAT and put the /PALM directory on it. When I do that I can use it in my sd based camera and in the PDA but still not able to access it in the card reader. I'm baffled. The 1 gig card works fine in the card reader.
  11. I can "reformat" it in the adapter while it is installed in my PDA. It creates a folder called Palm and a file on the root that is something like a volume label. When I try to access that directory in the card reader I get the same error message as before. My Palm formats in FAT not FAT32. I seem to remember that our Garmins like FAT32, is that correct?
  12. No I found that little write protect tab myself... Works the same in both settings. Directory Corrupt message is what I get. Thanks for the suggestion though. I will try putting the card back into the unit downloading a couple of maps again to the card along with a poi file and see. What is wierd is that the card that came with the unit is a Sandisk too. I would have thought that the adapter would work with all Sandisk microSD's. Or maybe it is just a faulty card.
  13. Perhaps someone can help me figure out what is going on. I purchased a new microSD 1 gig San Disk card and uploaded all the maps I will ever use plus a few custom POI files and about 650 Cache waypoints. All that works great. I can take the card out of the unit and put it into the adapter and the card reader and I can access the directories and copy and erase files as needed. Then I took the original card that came with my unit and I wanted to erase the files and directories that were on it. Every time I try to access a directory on that card I get a "File or Directory Corrupt" message. I can not re-format it in the card reader. I can not copy files to it. I am left with a card that is basically unusable. I was hoping to create a back-up card of sorts with the maps that my wife uses plus eliminate all the cache waypoint on the unit so I can give her an easier way to navigate around on her business trip. I can not seem to do that with the card that came with the unit. Anybody else have that difficulty? Is there a way to re-initialize the card while it is in the unit itself?
  14. The newer units switch to trackup at a certain magnification of zoom and then back to Northup when you are out further than that. It is user configurable. Press the menu key when you are on the map page. Select Setup Map If you are not on the page below use the rocker key to go to the menu on the far left. The option Marked Below is the setting you want to change. I have it 5 mile. If you hit enter on that setting it will allow you to change it to what ever zoom level you desire. See if changing the magnification helps.
  15. If you want to suppliment your Garmin with a good road map take a look at this site... http://www.caribmart.com/stlucia.html I am particularly impressed with the IGN versions of the maps they stock, did not see one for St. Lucia but they have two others. YOu might want to check other place online for an IGN map of ST. Lucia. The one I have of St. Martin is a very detailed combined Topo/road map of St. Martin and the outlying islands. It did not have all the street names on the island, that is something I am still looking for. D
  16. What actual NGS data do folks load into their GSPr's usign the above suggestions? I have a new Garmin 76CSX, I used a *.loc file with all the local BMarks into GSAK. Then I filtered on BM type and exported them to a gpx file. I used Garmin's POI loader to create a custom POI database of all of those BMarks, but now want to include more of the description and details either in the POI database or in Cachemate on my PDA so I can on the spur of a moment go looking. Has anybody sucessfully exported the NGS datasheet stuff into Cachemate so you can go paperless with the descriptions and recovery logs appearing like they do for a Cache?
  17. If I were looking for a Blue tooth GPS with an interface to my Palm I think I would look at the Delorme Blue Tooth Logger that comes bundled with a couple of options of maps and PDA access software. Five years ago I used my Palm III with a GPS for a couple of years and loved the maps that Delorme puts out for real time tracking and routing. My only regret was that back then was that Delorme did not make a GPS unit that could interact with my Palm and so I purchased another make. When my old Palm III died, the GPS was useless because it was dedicated to that model of Palm only. The Blue Tooth Logger will work with any Blue Tooth PDA, so you have built in protection for not going obsolete like that. I still have a Palm, but I chose a more rugged Garmin handheld GPS for my caching and hiking. I rely upon the Palm for so much these days that I would be completely lost if I ruined it while crossing a stream or dropping it on a rock.
  18. Thanks... did not know that it was storing the tracks in two places at once. Do you think that I am correct about the bar graph telling how much space is used on the data card? I know others were asking how they could tell.
  19. If you want the GPX files with all the detailed information I think you have to join as a premium member and then do the Pocket query. Other programs can create gpx files... but you have to get the information in there in the first place, so unless you want to enter it all by hand into a program like GSAK etc... becoming a member is the best way.
  20. I agree with both posts. Used the map set for St. Barths and St. Martin last January and was very pleased.
  21. Tried this in the Bench Mark forum but no one could help. Perhaps here is better. I am a newbie to BM hunting, only found 5 that are within my walking route in the mornings. I do want to do this some more. I have a Garmin 76csx and know that I can load up a custom POI file of points to my GPSr. I recently have done so... but when I use a *.loc file the information that actually appears under the BM name on my GPS is very sparse. I used GSAK to read the *.loc file. Exported the BM's via a filter and then the export utility to a *.gpx file that Garmin's POI loader can then load. Is there way to increase the amount of information about each BM on the Garmin so I can read at least part of the description etc? I am totally new to GSAK and how to get it to place text in the output files for the POI Loader, so if this can be done can you please post the instructions of what I am supposed to write and where before I do the export? Thanks
  22. I would certainly like a via option myself on my 76CSX... I think I found an indicator of how full the data card is over on the Track Setup screen. Would like to know if it works that way for others. When I select Tracks I get a screen like this: When I go to track setup, at the bottom of the screen is an option called Data Card Setup Select that and you will go to a screen that has a check box for Logging tracks to the Data Card. Below that is a bar that gives you a percentage... I am guessing that this is how full the card is. Am I right? If I am right then one of my feature suggestions would be to make this screen a little more easily accessible. It was not intuitive for me to find it there. Juat putting a screen with Data Card Info that would tell you how big the card is and then this little bar graph would be a lot better. I also am confused a bit. Maybe this is a bug that needs fixing. Why would the tracks page show 99% space used up when I have store to the card selected and I have a ton of space on the card available? Are some tracks stored on the unit and some stored on the card?

Thia may be the wrong forum to post this, but I wanted to start here. Moderate, feel free to move it to GPS Units and Software if that is where it needs to be.
  24. Can not tell you much from the limited experience with my 5 days of owning a 76csx, but so far the altimeter has been not as reliable as the one in my 76cs. Even after calibration it seems to be off by more than I would like. Here's my recent tests. I walked to a local benchmark that has been recoverd and position adjusted both vertically and horizontally. I calibrated for altitude and then walked to the next benchmark (10 minute walk away) and checked it against my charts for the 5 benchmarks on my walking route. Even after just 10 minutes the new 76csx was off elevation by more than 8 feet. One time it was 26 feet. With my prior 76cs, without calibration it was never more than 6-8 feet off on my initial BM and then after calibration was 2 - 3 feet or less. 10 minute walk to the next BM was within 2 feet. One time it was right on the money and stayed that way for all 5 BM's. I took readings on a defined point at my home right after calibration and when ever I turned on the 76cs as I was heading to the car for a geocaching outing I would check to see how close it was ... if it was more than 8 feet I would recalibrate. Only had to recal 2-3 times. Now with the new 76csx, each time I go out the door the elevation is off by 14 to 20 minimum. This tells me that the sensor in the 76CSX has been changed somehow... or the algorithem for correcting the altitude in the auto-calibration mode is off. I have yet to try the same test while shutting off the auto-calibration function on the altimeter. Will keep you posted.
  25. Yes. As Briansnat said GSAK works and it is what I use to do this with my 60C and 60CX. In GSAK go to File/Export to MapSource file. Name your export file and point to where you want to save it. In the "Cache description format" box type: %Hint. Select the proper MapSource version (6 GDB) and check the box for "Load into Mapsource after generation" and click on Generate. This will create a .gdb file and will open it in MapSource when done. You can have 30 characters in your note field. What I do is edit the hint in MapSource by right-clicking on each waypoint and go to Properties. If the hint is too long, which most will exceed 30 characters, I use a shorthand method so I understand what will help me in the field. It's the best we can do right now. Good luck! Now, with my 60CX, I create custom POIs for cache waypoints and can have a hint of 88 characters in the Note field, plus 44 more in the Name field, for a total of 132! Way cool stuff there, and there is virtually no limit to the number of custom POIs. Okay a couple of newbie quesitons here about the Custom POI's. Can you load the custom POI's in with the geocache icon? Have you created or has somebody created a step by step faq on how you edit and create the poi files for upload to our units? If so where can I find the step by step instructions? Finally, searching among the POI's, is there a way to scroll through them all or do you have to call them up in small groups by some kind of search filter?
