  1. I'm still a fan of the paid app, although I don't think you can get it anymore. I guess the free official app is OK. Is a GPS better? Well that's like asking if a Camaro is better than a Peterbilt. It depends on what you want. Some pros of the app are that you don't need to download anything. It connects right to the hamster wheels. Great for random caching adventures, with up date info. Pros of the GPS more rugged, better battery life. There are different apps, and different GPS units. It depends on what you want.
  2. Didn't have a pen? Not an excuse. You're a geocacher you should carry one. Actually IMO everyone should always have one. Twice I didn't have a pen (one broke and one fell out of my pocket somewhere), both times I also returned to sign the log. A broken pen, or the log was to wet to sign, or some other unforseen incidebt, maybe. But just not bringing one, nope.
  3. Say what? B. Bbisbthebnewbspacebar. Horrible. You can definitely tell when I'm on my phone. And it's too funny to change.
  4. What is your reason for deleting logs? If it's just because you can, that is not allowed. I know some people who just post logs that don't mean anything. Well unless they aren't indicating they found it You can't delete them. TFTC, found, or even just thanks are valid (although crappy) logs. Random letters, blank logs, feel free to delete. But give it a day or 2 first. Some people just log placeholders and change them after.
  5. Nope. Nobody at all has any ideas. Seriously though there's lotsbofbthreads on that topic. Lots of Google results. And perhaps even better, lots of geocacher out there that you can find and see what you like, what works, and what makes a bad geocache.
  6. Not really. Both are the blue question marks on the map. You could have a puzzle cache (break the code, do math, whatever to get to co-ords) You could have a night cache (follow the trail of reflectors) You could have a challenge cache (the cache is at the posted co-ords, and may be very easy to find, but you can't log it until you complete the challenge of say logging 10 events) or anything else that's not one of the other categories. All as different from each other as an event is different than a multi.
  7. So what you enjoy is the right way and what others enjoy is wrong? Well I don't like your name or profile picture. You should be forced to change them to something I agree with You may not like them, but some do. What's wrong with that?
  8. How can it update? It's not connected to the internet, it's connected to GPS. Now you can update it manually. Just load the cache again, and any new logs, changes, etc are there. You can do this by running a pocket query once a week every week using the same criteria, and load it to the GPS. Only problem is archived caches will not show up on a PQ, so you could have caches on your GPS that don't exist anymore.
  9. Other people have had issues with them. As far as I know, everybody has received their order, even I'd it was a long wait. They too have had no communication. I've ordered from them before as well, and it did take a long time. As in ordered a custom TB decal from California the same day and it arrived 2 weeks before my stuff from cachingcontainers. They are a legitimate (though not very good) business and I have no doubt you will (or would have had you not went through with the dispute) eventually get your stuff. As for when, well that the common problem.
  10. You can't. What you can do is go to https://www.geocaching.com/notify/ and you can select to receive email notifications for a variety times, including new caches and events. I use Gmail and have a Gmail app on my phone. I get notified soon as it's published. You can use your favourite email service. Or most (if not all) cell carriers have an email to text. Something similar to yournumber@phonecartier.com But it may limit message length so links may not come in complete and you won't be able to view them.
  11. I only found one. It is called simply "GPS Averaging" and it doesn't seem to work well on my phone. What else should I be searching for? Don't use an app. Take multiple readings. Walk away come back. Donor from another direction. Then average them out. Included what some musta missed... What is a "donor from another direction"? Should have been "do it" Stupid tablet....
  12. Adding them for everyone would mean that premium members are paying and not getting anything. Kinda the point of premium membership is to get stuff you can't get for free. And it's better that it's something that people actually use rather than something nobody would use.
  13. I only found one. It is called simply "GPS Averaging" and it doesn't seem to work well on my phone. What else should I be searching for? Don't use an app. Take multiple readings. Walk away come back. Donor from another direction. Then average them out.
  14. Library caches are very popular and putting a cache there (with permission) would be fine. Just be careful how you word the cache page--your write-up should focus on the cache not the library. Don't mention that you are trying to bring attention to the library, and don't ask people to check out books. Don't suggest that people should interact with the staff, although I think it would be okay to mention what you did say here. Of course it will need to be at least .1 mile from the existing cache. Take your time to make it a really great cache, and while you're working on it, also take the time to find more caches. How have I not heard of the .1 mile rule? I've honestly never seen it anywhere. I knew there were rules for multicaches or waypoints? I'm afraid if that's true the caches would be too close. The community is a really small place sadly.. I thought I've seen two different peoples caches close together.. I guess they weren't as close as I thought? It's been in effect for years. If you've looked through the guidelines I, surprised you haven't seen any mention of the saturation guidelines. And that's only for physical stages, so a fake location on a puzzle cache, or an even cache can appear to be 10 feet from a traditional pn the maps. But physical containers (of different caches) aren't that close.
  15. Well if it's attached to the car and you find a cache big enough to put the car in then I'm sure the owner wouldn't mind if it was logged like a normal bug. But it's basically just a big sticker saying "hey look at me I'm a geocacher"
  16. Do a normal search, view the results on a list. Now you hit the distance button and it will give you the closest ones. Hit it again and it should give farthest ones. Or at least that's how it works with with date placed and last found. Or sort by distance and go to the last page. Actually that I fully read your post it won't help.
  17. Generally no, a situation such as construction would not warrant a needs archived. It would be disabled until such time the construction is finished. Of course with any cache the CO can decide to archive it, but it's not your choice, it's theirs. Now if there's several DNF and a CO that's missing then a NA would be appropriate regardless sof construction
  18. When people start navigating to the cache based on the description and not the GPS co-ords then the reviewers can start watching for that. Personally I think you're making it out to be more than it really is. Especially since we are navigating to co-ords and not place names. Now if it was a puzzle or letterbox where that could cause issues, then yes fix it.
  19. So last night I found a cache using the old paid app. Working fine. Today I tried to view the caches logs and it only loaded 2 (the ones I viewed last night). I know at least 2 other cachers found it so I check with the new app. And I can't load any logs. Since it's happening to both apps (on Android) I'm thinking it a bug on the website. Or at least I'm hoping it is, otherwise it means it's my phone
  20. You can't. I'm sure it's to prevent people from posting events a few weeks in advance then changing the date to less than the 2 weeks required notice. Send a message to your reviewer, include the gc code, and what you would like done - in this case moving the event date.
  21. Sure, there is no reason to log owner maintenance before it's actually done. But do we really need three logs for it? Sure if the cache is actually missing, or destroyed disable right away then proceed with maintenance and enabling it. But what about small things? Why do I need to have separate logs to replace the logbook? Or put a new LnL out because the other one is getting old and worn out? Neither of those require disabling the cache (it's still there, and findable.) One log-ower maintenance covers that just fine.
  22. A few times. One I ended up moving and went I went back I couldn't reme,be where wit was. Under a rock is a good place, but when they add more rocks it's a bit of a hide. Recently I was with a other cacher who went to fond one of my caches that tuned out not to be there. Yet there was what was obviously a cache container, camo'd with a logbook. Yet it said it was not the cache. I really don't know what happened there.
  23. How do you know if it's the cache if you didn't actually get it? It's like flying over Las Vegas and telling people you visited the city. Some caches are harder to get to, just the way it is. And there is a difference between not singing the long because it's full, damaged, or missing and not signing the log because you didn't actually get to the log.
  24. That's normal. It happens on Facebook as well. It's not advertising it's a, I guess your call it a smart link. Similar as when you lost a YouTube video on Facebook it actually had the video.
  25. If the found it log has no indication of the cache being found (!, or even a random letter) I just delete them. My justification is either the cache page is not a forum, so anything not relating to the cache I can delete. Or that a random letter or symbol, or whatever it is not indicating a cache has been found would be more appropriate for a write note, not a found it. If you can't be bothered to even put TFTC (which imo is pretty easy and just lazy) then you must not want the find that bad. And while I haven't had it a lot, those people have not logged any of my caches like that again. But I will say that some people may put place holder text until they can log properly. But it should still be something indicating the found the cache. As for better logs, well being able to like them or favorite them (if it will even make a dofference at all) will result in false "good" logs. That is logs that are good just so they can get the points, not because they appreciate the cache, or the effort of the CO.
