  1. Ok, so I'm working on a custom cache container, I've decided to use an old webcam as a kind of CCTV webcam type cache. Now, what I've done so far is dismantled and gutted the webcam to create the main outer container. Next step I'm hoping to do is spray-paint it to make it look a little older and more rugged, I was thinking silver/black, but not 100% sure. And also looking for tips on how to best waterproof it, and also how to incorporate the log sheet hide into it (the lens is removable so was thinking of somehow putting it into that gap at the front of the camera) but not sure how I would make it accessible for the geocacher themselves.
  2. But let's say you meet your favorite celebrity, and have an autograph book. Wouldn't it be easier if you just have a QR code on the cover and have them scan it? Just think of all the time that saves. No, the QR code would need to be on he celebrity and you would have to scan it, it'd be you meeting the celeb not the other way around. Now, money-making venture, lets open a tattoo shop and convince all celebs to come on board with the idea I can just picture it now, some celeb hunter running after a celeb and taking a picture of a QR code on his... arm Pretty cool idea actually, think it'll get patent approved?
  3. I usually have my backpack with me wherever I'm walking. It has in it. 1. Few Pens 2. Sharpie Marker 3. Fizzy Pop 4. Snacks Then I have my smartphone in my pocket, and usually a little bit of change incase I pass a shop and have ran out of pop.
  4. I use my smartphone to hide my hides, my co-ords aren't always spot on, but alongside the descriptions and hints they're found just as much as other hides. I use an external app that just pulls the coords, I usually visit GZ a few different days and get a few different reads before setting the final average coordinates, I also double check online using google maps just to make sure that it looks roughly in the area I chose. Just a little of an added check. ---- And with regards to your signature items, I love the idea, it's signature items that I look out for most, I like seeing the way people leave their mark on a cache, all with one exception, whoever it is in my area who uses the ps/2 to usb mouse adapters as his/her signature item, they're just annoying lol.
  5. suppose a CO could be the paranoid type and stick a label on a cache saying "if lost please return to...." @OP - But yeh, only thing to do is either ignore him until he stops, and replace cache or archive it. It's all part of the maintenance side of placing a cache. making it premium or moving the spot slightly may help too. Otherwise, buy a really powerful airsoft gun, message the guy saying its ok you've replaced the container, then just sit in the bushes and wait a few days or so.
  6. Well, the majority of the big cachers in my area are premium anyway, and I've recently became premium too, but I would still prefer to keep all my caches open to everyone. The only thing that would make me change my mind would be if I started having issues with muggles, but upto now I've had no trouble. I like them being open to everyone, more finds means more cool signatures to look at, more chance of cool stamps used to sign the logs, and more swag making its way through the caches and increased chance of seeing cool items.
  7. the container is a clip lock container, just a cheap version of lock n lock ones. it has a decent seal on the lid and ive used them for my other hides without any leaks at all upto now. As long as maintained I am confident the container will hold up well.
  8. I already have a few caches out at the moment, so I definitely think putting the containers out is just as much (if not more) fun than finding them for me, The best part to me is seeing the swag people leave in the caches as well as the trackables/coins and also the cool stamps and stickers that some people use to sign the logs. I do enjoy finding them too though. And camo-wise, I'm not sure yet, I wasn't going to camouflage it, I've used a sharpie to add a little camo to the lid, but I've seen a few that don't use camo, and they've been pretty good caches still, so all depends on whether I find a good hiding place or not and whether I feel it needs camouflage once I have the hiding spot scouted.
  9. The 15 mile walk is just in general from my house, not what everyone will need to do to find the cache. it's just a walk I do from time to time, the cache place is a really nice place I discovered due to a nearby cache leading me there previously, it's a decent distance from the cache I found but in a place I would otherwise not have discovered. it's only a short distance, maybe 10/15 minutes from parking and 30 minutes from town centre. so a mile walk or so for most cachers if that. And it's a really nice area, with a few other caches nearby.
  10. Well, payday was this morning, so I finally became premium member, going to hold off an getting a handheld GPS for now as I was planning on the eTrex 10 but everyone's recommending to save a little extra for the eTrex 20, so going to do that. Smartphone should do for a while longer. Well, was out in town today, didn't get any caching done as I had hoped, but did pick up some cool cheap swag for my next cache, already have the container all ready, full, logbook and swag inside and ready to hide. It's going to be a little bigger than my previous ones, still not gigantic, but a decent size for the kids, and hopefully a little more of a challenge for the adults. Already have a rough idea of where I will be setting this one up, and hoping it proves a really fun cache for everyone. So tomorrow I'm heading out on a 15 mile walk with my backpack, snacks, cache and smartphone in hand and setting this one up. Contents: 4 Disney Sticker Sheets (Mickey, Minnie, Cars, Disney Princess.), Keyrings (Pudsey, Dolphin, Elephant & Scorpion.), 4 x Spinning Tops, 2 x Bouncy Balls, 2 x mazes, Selection of Erasers (Butterfly, Flower, Racing Car, Cow Horse Giraffe (3 Pack).), Logbook + Pencils. What do you guys think about the swag, I've tried to keep it as a good mix for boys & girls, and also are there any recommendations you could give on placing a cache this size, I'm undecided as to whether to keep it free like my others or make it premium, I don't want it muggled, but none of my others have been and I'd rather not limit people who want to find it.
  11. There's plenty of treasure to be found it's just called Swag. Ok, so the majority will be mainly for kids, but there's geocoins and trackables (which you move from cache to cache and track online) to be found, as well as people who put special FTF (First to Find) prizes into their caches, I've also found foreign coins before, and I'm pretty new too (joined a while back but didn't really cache much back then. You never know what you're going to find in a cache if you go for the small-large cache types. Also congrats on your first few finds
  12. It wasn't the "Pre-Loaded with the Most Popular Geocaches in the World" that captured my attention, as I don't really travel much. but it's the fact its within my budget and was designed for caching, but from what I've read, for a starter GPS its worth saving the little extra and going for the Etrex 20 rather than getting the etrex 10. Definitely becoming premium tomorrow (payday) that was already decided I've wanted to be premium for a little while now. But I guess I'm going to stick with android until I get a little extra cash for the Etrex 20, I hate being on minimum wage at least I have a job though, not everyone's as lucky these days.
  13. Is this a listing for three caches? or Is this an improperly listed multicache? I was wondering the same thing, then you read the NE log and find it's private property too. I may not have found 25 caches before having a go at setting up some of my own, but at least I found a few and read the rules about placing them too, as well as reading the forums to find out about good containers, I eventually went with the good old clip-lock type, pretty cheap and don't need replaced often, not had to replace any as of yet. Its definitely worth doing either A. A bit of research. B. Go out and find caches to see what works well. Rather than just putting a log sheet in a water bottle then dumping it somewhere, I mean yeah, I used a water bottle for one of mine, but that was a propper bicycle water bottle not an empty bottle after I drank something bought for 50p at a shop, mine has a propper seal on it, as well as being coloured in nicely with a sharpie to help it blend in. I have plenty of spare clip-locks ready though if it doesn't hold up well in the field. Its definitely worth investing a few pound (or dollars) in a suitable container though and also worth spending a little more time to ensure you get your listing right, if it's a multi then list it as a multi, if it's 3 separate caches then list them separate, and also read up on where you can place them too. Anyway, enough rambling on from me
  14. This has popped up a few times while looking for an entry level GPS to buy (hopefully shortly). Its pretty cheap at around £110, and is designed specifically for Geocaching, but from the reviews I've read, the maps are limited and after updates there are a few people who've had issues with battery life. I was wondering if anyone here has one and what their views on it are, I was hoping to go Garmin due to the scale of map updates on offer and the fact I live near a lot of dirt trails, cycle paths etc... (County Durham, UK) but the fact this is designed specifically for Geocaching has caught my interest. Any views good or bad are welcome
  15. I've seen cards and bits of paper that say similar things stuck to lampposts or in phoneboxes, but that's where I go looking for them, I never even considered anyone putting them in caches
  16. Ok, so been using smart phone upto now, but with payday just around the corner and I'm going to be upgrading to premium on tuesday I have decided I need a better handheld GPS. A few things that may factor in with your recommendations, I live near lots of countryside so there is a lot of tree cover where I go walking. I have a budget of around £100-ish. I am looking to buy from a store as I hate ordering online. I live in the County Durham area in the UK. Looking for something that can grab my coordinates easily as I enjoy placing caches a lot, and smartphone isn't the best at that. So far the two possibilities I have come across is the Garmin Etrex 10 (£89) and the Garmin Dakota 10 (£105), so any points about these two or any other handhelds for similar prices are very welcome
  17. Telling a reviewer you would like to adopt them would be of no use unless you can get the original CO to reply. Someone wanted to adopt one of mine a while back as I was no longer caching at the time, I got an email trough and logged on to see the reviewer had given me a deadline to reply to the adoption request or maintain the cache otherwise it would get archived. I happily let the other guy adopt it since I saw the request in time, but if the user hasn't been online in over a year I don't think that would happen in your case. Best bet would be to log as "needs archiving" then set your own up once the spot's free.
  18. I've only ever posted one comment that may be considered a slight hint, I don't think it actually was but to be on the safe side I just ticked the "encrypt log entry" option... [Then typed most of my log like this]Hint Here[Then the rest of the log like this] That way it encrypts the part this isn't in the square brackets, I only did it to be on the safe side, I don't actually think it would have helped with the find anyway, I just posted which path I took that I found the easiest, as there were two possible paths. But if you found it based on the information available before you posted your log, then as long as you've popped it back in the same place you shouldn't have any need for providing any more hints. The CO has clearly provided enough for the find.
  19. I've only set up one travel bug, it travelled over 2000 miles before it eventually went missing, by far exceeded my expectations. After quite a few people stating it was no longer in the cache, and a wait of around 6 months just to see if it turned up I eventually marked it as missing to clear it from the caches page and stop people hoping to find it there. I would of been very appreciative if I'd received a message from someone saying they'd lost it, no harm in it, things like this happen. I'm pretty new to caching and don't exactly do much geocaching, but I will definitely be setting more travel bugs off in the future, it was fun while it lasted.
  20. Well, no pictures just yet, but I really like bridges in peaceful places, 2 recent caches (one today and one a few days ago) literally 10 minutes walk from where I work have both led me to discover some nice bridges and nice walks, both of which I'd never have known about. Definitely going to be some new destinations for my morning walks before work, will try and get some pictures up sometime.
  21. Well, I don't really like micro's/nano's much, but I've started taking my nephew geocaching with me and he seems to prefer them, I don't see any problems with them being in woods either as long as the description and hints are good enough, sure the GPS may not be great under the cover, but if it was spot on for every cache wouldn't it get too easy? As long as the hint or description gives you a reasonable idea where to look then it should be ok, a hint such as "under the ivy on tree stump" or "in hole on fallen tree" would be pretty reasonable even for a micro, even if there's 100's of trees there should be at least one thing you can write in the hint to draw people to the right place. Obviously placing a micro up one of 200 trees and giving no hint would be pretty mean, so as long as the hider is nice when putting the cache online. I do however prefer the smaller caches that you can fit swaps/swag into, the logs are bigger so you get to see the cool stamps some eople use to sign their names with, and also get to see cool coins/trackables and swaps.
  22. Well, the first ever cache I placed eventually went missing, and I was struggling to get down to maintain it, I wasn't even using this site much tbh, I was going to archive it, but one of the people who had previously found it wanted to adopt it, it was one of my favourite caches and I had no problem in letting him adopt it, he knew exactly where the location was, he's maintained it ever since, and now I've managed to get back to geocaching I've set up some others, and despite my old cache being premium now and me still being basic, I still stop by if I'm in the area just to check up on it. Caches shouldn't be placed just to boost your numbers, if you can't maintain them yourself then you should either get someone to adopt them, or archive them, not just post asking people to replace them for you.
  23. Well, usually I just use the little toys and keyrings I've won in the 2p coin pusher arcade machines etc... though it's usually just to set up my own caches, I don't usually trade in other caches, though I enjoy seeing what's in them. Although I'm hoping to set up a few bigger caches shortly and was in town today, in Wilkinsons I noticed they had a lot of things that would be perfect for swaps/tradables, racing car erasers, little figures etc... some 50p each, others 4 for £1. A coin, was only a euro, but I love the look of foreign money, I don't exactly collect it, but I have a few weird coins put aside just because they look cool. If you maintain it, then not until it gets muggled repeatedly. If you notice the swaps start to suffer just dispose of the broken, rusted, damaged ones and top it up with new ones simple.
  24. When we first started caching, a disposable camera in the cache was not uncommon. Finders would log when the camera was full, and the owner would go out and retrieve it, then post the photos on the cache page. Haven't seen anyone do that in quite a while. (Guess it's tough to fit a camera in a micro? LOL) It's up to you, is the hassle and expense worth your time? Or would the enjoyment of seeing the photos outweigh that concern? B. Suppose it probably would be worth the hassle, after all its only a matter of retrieving a camera occasionally and uploading a few pics, and the expense isn't exactly that high, if it does get muggled can always replace with a disposable or edit the description to make it a regular cache etc...
  25. Hi, I have a very old cheap digital camera which I don't use, partly as its a crappy cheap 3.2mp and I have a much better one now. I was thinking of making a cache, and including the camera in the cache so that people can take a photo of themselves at the cache site with the camera and then replace the camera again, then on a regular basis I would swap memory cards in the camera and upload all the pics to the cache profile gallery. I know that there would be a high chance of someone taking the camera, but I was thinking that if I make it a difficult multi-cache it would hopefully weed out any possible people only after muggling the cache. Also thinking maybe buy a cheap disposable camera from poundland then just getting the film developed when full and scanning in the pics for the gallery. But that would probably work out more expensive over time as it really is a cheap camera that I have atm, worth a few pound at the most.
