  1. Quite right - an event cannot be an organised cache hunt - it's meant to be a social get-together of cachers. But here's an example (My Event) of how to combine an outing and an event. Note that the event is the social get-together at lunch time (the time and co-ords of the listing), and that has prominence in the listing. Lower down in the listing, with less prominence, is the info about the outing which is optional, and not necessary to claim event attendance.
  2. GC2C0E - Muizenberg, Cape Town....?
  3. For a traditional cache - ummm, nope. The co-ords must be for the exact location of the cache, please see the guideline which says "The coordinates listed on the traditional cache page are the exact location of the cache." Obviously, GPS units aren't 100% accurate, so within 5 metres is considered as an acceptable GPS error, and is normally OK. Some freedom is allowed with mystery caches though.
  4. Thanks a lot - much appreciated!!
  5. We know the Swazi parks well, so here's some info, hope it helps.... Malolotja (NW Swaziland) - on the Swazi/SA border behind Barberton/Badplaas - very beautiful, very mountainous, nice campsite (look for the underground stream just below the campsite), lots of blesbok, zebra, and some rare mountain reedbuck, no caches there, but we're planning to hide some in Nov if we can get permission, minimal road network, but a hikers' paradise if you can handle major vertical elevation change hikes. At the SW end of Malolotja is the Lion Cavern cache which is very special and a must-do (near Oshoek border and Ngwenya Glassworks which is great, and a nice coffee shop at the glassworks just inside the border, also ideal for an event) - there are 3 "ages" of mining, and it's the oldest mine in the world. Mlilwane (Central Swaziland) - not pristine nature having been converted from a farm in the 60's, but lots of game, and you can walk around there on hiking trails - just get a trail card for a E10 deposit at the office so they know who's out and about in the reserve. Some nice caches there - the volcanic spring is nice, the Mlilwane 4x4 cache is great, and Execution Rock is a wow!! Nyala, impala, warthogs, etc come into the camp in the morning and evening, and one can have some wonderful up-close nature experiences there. The main campsite is a bit of a distance from the ablutions being at the far end of the camp, but there are a limited number of campsites in the middle of the camp which are much closer (and nicer). Hlane (NE Swaziland) - very special rhino experiences to be had there, and nice camping too. A 2 hour bush walk with the ranger and getting up close and personal with 2 tons of sharp pointed rhino only costs about E80pp. I've got lots of pics taken in these reserves on Facebook. Anyone wanting to see them is welcome to send me a friend request - Andy Maclaurin PS: If you're already an FB friend, you'll find those albums about Sept 2009 - they're roughly in date order. Not sure if we can join you or not yet, but we'll see how our arrangements work out.....ENJOY!!
  6. Hi Sandpit friends, Does anybody know Pixie44 who appears to be inactive and has been sitting on our geocoin (and a TB) since last year? If so, a prod in the ribs would be much appreciated.... Andy
  7. Hey, I wanna play this game too... I don't know if the pics have to be recent to qualify - if so then ignore this pic which was taken last spring, but I'll share it anyway because I think it's cute. It's a (camo) crab spider with it's wasp prey. This specific pic was where Mr Gps Storm taught me how to use my camera's macro setting properly. Thanks Chris - it's a bummer being tech challenged, but you opened some doors for me. Isn't that what son-in-laws are for....? The cache is Duiwels Kantoor Exchange Cache and the log was on 24th October 2009
  8. Awesome pic!!!! This is the cache listing - there are some more nightjar pics in the gallery.
  9. If you comply with the Geocaching Logo Terms of Use then it won't be necessary to ask for permission.
  10. Recent info says that the Motobos are a disaster - almost no game, poorly maintained, and exhorbitant fees.
  11. I know Zimbabwe, eastern/northern Botswana, and southern Zambia quite well, so feel free to ask for more info. Sadly, we won't be joining you for your trip - we're planning to visit the remote Matusadona Park again (southern shore of Kariba). Must do's for us in the area you're looking at are: - Motobos Nat Park near Bulawayo, some nice campsites in the southern reserve there, and Rhode's grave - Makgadikgadi Pans, especially Nata bird sanctuary at the top end of Sowa pan, good camping there - Northern Chobe in the dry season (mind-blowing), nice campsite about 40kms west of Kasane - Kazangula Ferry is great fun - Vic Falls, nice campsites a bit west of Livingstone, but best viewing from the Zim side. - If budget permits, a houseboat from Binga and explore the SW end of Kariba - Kafue in Zam. Never been there, but I believe it's great, and on our bucket list We wouldn't go via Gaberone though - not much to see there. We'd rather go via Makopane to Francistown, or via SW Zim. Oh, and the latest Garmin maps are.... well, not that helpful. BTW, the main road from Livingstone to Lusaka is probably the best tarred road in Africa right now, so don't be scared to venture into southern Zambia if you get local info. Fuel in Zambia is expensive though. I don't know the Caprivi at all, other than what I've seen from the Bots side, and the defence force part that I'd rather forget.....
  12. If you're planning on visiting Mpumalanga province and/or the Kruger Park, feel free to contact us. We can give advice to make your visit to our home area more fulfilling and probably less expensive.
  13. Cool - we'll be there... That's two adults, one tent, one vehicle, and a lot of attitude. We'll help the Pretoria folks clean up their mess - what do you pay?? LOL
  14. Phew, our mouths have been watering to join you on this trip, but sadly, we can't.... Been there, and done that a few times (the pass and the pub, not the caches), and it's always a very special adventure, especially in winter. Ice on the road is quite an adrenaline rush So are the 4x4 taxis - LOL!! Sad that there's talk of upgrading the pass - that could partly spoil it's "specialness". Enjoy your trip - we envy you!!! And don't miss out on the gluwein Some pics from our last trip to whet your appetite - (If you want to keep it a surprise, then don't look at them...) Ice Waterfall Another Ice Waterfall An SUV without low range can get there too... The view from Gluwein-fontein Take it all, but take it easy!!
  15. Any material change in the nature of a cache which creates a different experience should be a new listing, so the right thing to do is to archive the old cache, and create a new listing for the new cache. The new cache can refer to (and link to) the old listing to preserve the rich history which your Treasure Chest cache has got. BTW - I'm only temporarily in the reviewer's seat again while ROTSIP's away on holiday.
  16. Very cute, and it's truly "African" - June has got 31 days!!
  17. FIFA 2010 visitors to Nelspruit (Mbombela Stadium), are very welcome to make contact with us for advice, arranging a geocaching outing, or just to get together over a cuppa or a beer and swop stories. We will gladly take geo-visitors on a local geocaching outing, and we're prepared to arrange an event/s to coincide with our football visitors if there's enough interest. If you're doing a self-drive trip to our area (Kruger Park, Panorama Route, etc) feel free to pop in - you'll normally find Fish Eagle and GPS Storm here
  18. South African (and African) coins that we have in our mini-collection..... 19. You might find some useful material here
  20. Not at all...!!! It was fun reviewing the MF2010 caches - they were submitted 15-20 a day for pre-review which spread the workload. There were also minimal issues, so the reviewing was easy. I can see that they aren't inane caches, and they're on our to-do list for the near future. About 3 years ago, we only had 12 caches left to find in the greater Pretoria area, now there are over 250!! Like being a kid in candy store.
  21. Please join me in welcoming our new reviewer ROTSIP who will soon be taking over reviewing for South Africa from me. Wondering who ROTSIP is? Well, wonder no more - he's chosen to be open about his identity, but will keep his player and reviewer accounts seperate. He's Rodney Pistorius of rodnjoan. Rodney - a big welcome, and I hope you enjoy working with the great SA geo-community as much as I have.
  22. I've decided to stand down from reviewing and I'll soon be announcing who your new reviewer will be. Despite my best intentions to retire early, I've been overtaken by that dreaded dirty word "work" and need to free up my time to focus on (hopefully) making a buck or two to fill in the big hole left in my retirement planning by the recession. I'll still be around for a while to ensure a smooth transition, and I have yet to decide whether I'll remain a relief reviewer or retire completely from reviewing. I'd like to take this opportunity to say a big THANK YOU to the wonderful South African geo-community. It's been a pleasure working with you, I've made many geo-friends, and enjoyed it thoroughly.
  23. I've had that too. It's likely that they used the wrong GC-Code, and a quick email to the cacher will get it sorted out. This log from Alaska was the FTF on one of our most challenging caches - huh? Easily fixed, and the log was changed to an entertaining note...
  24. Recent Guidelines update For the "weird" cachers out there - now you can hide a cache on your own private planet...
