Interesting. Why would somebody place a Premium Only cache? I have done a couple both here and overseas and don't see any reason why I would place one. Just asking.
In my case, it's out of respect for landowners who have given permission for caches at sensitive locations on their property.
I never used to have any PMO caches because in principle I don't like them - but out of necessity, now I have some.
Have I had problems before - yup.
Has PMO stopped such problems - yup.

Maybe we can track down cachers in the UK and US who have worked with their respective agencies to see if we can proactively provide SANParks with a policy which marries the current Groundspeak guidelines with a SANParks policy? We should not need to reinvent the wheel.
I think that boat has sailed. The TMNP have had their discussion and the policy is made. I also think they will be less tough particularly than the US, where many Parks have banned caching altogether. It was suggested to TMNP that we could get other South African Park representatives (that already have working relationships with geocachers) could give input. They seem to want to make their own policies. Considering the uniqueness of the fynbos system, different spread of endangered fauna and flora, I think they justified to have a unique approach.
I agree that they need a unique approach. Over the years I've read most of the significant American and British parks agreements, and there's no "one size fits all" solution.

The decision has been taken in principle at the highest level to embrace geocaching across the breadth of Sanparks, including Kruger, but I understand that there's still a lot of work to be done on the practicalities, which might devolve down to individual parks...?? Dunno.
"The policy is made" - refers to TMNP only. I am not aware of a national policy. Perhaps they have developed their own policies whilst awaiting national guidance.
Sounds good. I reckon that TMNP is probably the best park to pioneer something like this. Either way, I'm thrilled to see what evolves into the future, and I'll be a very happy (read drunk) cacher the day that I can hide a physical container in the Kruger Park again!!

Update:
At last things seem to be moving! I had a brief discussion with one of the top brass and they have at last decided to create a policy for placing geocaches in the park. They have given me the name of an official who will be responsible for liaising with geocachers. I am in the process of making contact with said person. It looks like all current caches may need to be reviewed. If some caches need to be archived, I feel it is best to do what they want, otherwise we probably will lose any right to place caches in the TMNP area.

Yes, it's wonderful that things are happening at last.
The highest levels of SANPARKS are at last embracing geocaching as something that fits in with their future strategies. What a refreshing change from the exceptionally narrow-minded views that I had to deal with five years ago.
And, there's likely to be more good news in the future too, but we must be patient. The wheels are turning, albeit not very quickly yet...
Big thanks CapeDoc, surreptitious007 and others for your efforts - the previously insurmountable obstacles are now not so formidable anymore!!

Between some bad weather, and being out of the country for a few days, that hasn't happened (yet), but watch this space... Blue Swallow is one of our favourite stomping grounds and your cache is very much on our radar!!

I think they're horrible.
There's plenty resources to (unnecessarily) fiddle with things like this which aren't broken, but there's no resources to do the minor changes which could so easily have made challenges a success. Disappointing.

You'll see that it was created in 2007, and if you scroll down to her very 1st geocache find you'll see it was in 2005 - wow.
Fortunately, her father was already quite an experienced geocacher in 2007, and helped her write (and date) her logs accordingly, which will hopefully avoid her being branded as a cheat and a fraud.
Looking at the profile of the parents of the cacher in question - well, the good doctor (I assume his father) doesn't have that level of experience. And I assume that the cacher was unaware that there was a gallery waiting to brand him a fraud, else he'd have been more careful with dating his logs. Maybe, being a youngster (I presume), he might not be highly computer literate yet?

You don't, and I'm quite sure he didn't travel to all those places in one day.
As I said, please dig a bit deeper. It took me 30 seconds to work out what's happened.
Do I believe he found those caches? Oh yes.

On the surface it looks bogus, but dig a bit deeper....
If that log was on one of my caches, I'd view it as genuine.

Stairway to somewhere, but where...??
This cache has been around for quite a long time, and is less than 100 kms from my home.
It's one of the very best caches we've ever found.

Gorgeous Gorge Event V4.00 is recruiting suckers attendees
Unlike the previous Croc Gorge hikes which were "top-down", this one is a "bottom-up" hike. Not knowing how much "up" is possible, the plan is to only climb halfway up, have a picnic and a swim at Rockpools, then go back down - should take 4-5 hours. If that works out OK, we might attempt something braver next time - LOL!!

See your pic above - the "steps" just beyond the spillway are the fish ladder - to allow fish to swim upstream over the wall.

How ironic I ask that and had FTF on the last 4. They could have gone sooner however they are all in a place where nobody could go due to it been hunting season. If it wasn't for the slight problem of quizzing bullets they may have gone sooner. But I believe there is one that might have lasted longer in this series called the rubbing post.
Call that 3, not 4..... but well done nevertheless!!

How many caches are there on the Cape Peninsula? Please don't get too technical about the definition of peninsula, I just need a good guess.
It is for a newspaper article and fairly urgent.
About 640 (10% of all the caches in South Africa).
And I've found so few of them....

What fond memories this brings back.....
Jan 2011, four old fuddy-duddies, and a wonderful "POWER-TRAIL" of caches across Simonsberg and Swartkop Ridge.
This outing with great friends is one of the special memories I'll nurture for ever - thanks mates!!
If you're going to do both Simonsberg and Swartkop Ridge, then make sure that you allow enough time to be able take it easy and enjoy the outing, and take lots of water with. I envy you guys. I'd do that hike again anyday if I could - ENJOY!!
