  1. Yep, I've got a backpack with a change of clothes, and hiking boots, and another backpack loaded with trade items, and my two GPSr's - ready to go at a moment's notice. Tim
  2. I received my Return Receipt on 9.15.03 and also got a phone call from Bear Advertising. After explaining that there were TWO Grand Prize Coupons in the Brazilian Treasure, the young lady I spoke with said they would get back to me about what I had won. Yesterday, my name showed up on the prize page at the Magellan site saying I had won a SporTrak Color - I can't wait for it to get here. Does anyone else think it is strange that Magellan/Thales/Bear Advertising started awarding prizes BEFORE the cutoff date to submit your Grand Prize Coupon? I would have thought they would have waiting until the deadline to submit your coupons (9.30.03) and then put them all in a drawing. Guess that's not how they did it - like it was pre-determined which treasure would be awarded which prize...
  3. Just last Friday morning, there was a -9 whose center was 1.4 km from where I work, followed 3 minutes later by a -2 centered 24.8 km away. By the time it was time to go outside and watch, I had 4 people with me wanting to know what we were doing and how to find out more. I just barely caught the tail end of the -9, but Buthc saw it all. I did see all the -2, and it was a lot brighter than I had anticipated. Had a great time and now we keep an eye on the website for more flares so we can go outside to see them.
  4. I drove from Warren, OH to Killington, VT for the 2002 GPS Gold Rush - 1100 miles round trip! Luckily, I was able to claim a nice pair of Bolle sunglasses and some DeLorme Street Atlas software. Sure wish they'd have the Gold Rush again!
  5. The Brazilian Treasure in Pittsburgh also had multiple Grand Prize coupons - after Sir Cache-A-Lot took his for being FTF, I ALSO took a Grand Prize coupon. Cache-A-Lot was standing right next to me when I pulled it from the pack and I showed it to him! I still haven't gotten my Return Receipt from when I mailed it. I am curious to see if Magellan awards the same prize for me that Sir Cache-A-Lot was awarded. Is anyone else missing from the list of prize winners??? Tim
  6. I emailed Promotion Mechanics and Amanda from Magellan/Thales, asking what the breakdown of the Grand Prizes were - i.e how many of each prize were going to be given away, but I never heard anything back. I was under the assumption that all the Grand Prize coupons would be placed in a drawing after the September 30 cutoff to submit them. I guess, since Dru Morgan already got his SporTrak Color, that they are just randomly sending out Grand Prizes as they receive Grand Prize coupons.
  7. Hey, Lep, does that mean that the coords for the original cache will be released and then a second cache will be placed later in the Magellan contest? Also, is the original cache somewhere that we have enough info to find? [This message was edited by TimInOhio on August 17, 2003 at 11:24 PM.]
  8. Is there a way to determine the current number of GeoCaches out there? I am setting up a little GeoCaching adventure for my upcoming family reunion and it would be nice to give everyone a little background. Thanks in advance. TimInOhio
  9. Check out these caches: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=825cb555-271d-4ea4-bd8d-ad210c31d539 http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=5e08d6ed-70b6-40bd-9dd3-9bcf10616ac9 http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=9233c587-8831-4e07-b499-d43c6adeab90 TimInOhio
  10. Does anyone have any info on the GPS Goldrush? The website hasn't been updated since shortly after the 2002 Goldrush. I emailed the guy that is listed as the admin of the website, but no reply. Has anyone heard of any other commercial (i.e. prizes) caches, other than Magellan? Thanks. TimInOhio
  11. I am thinking about placing my first cache (a multi-cache, at that) and I am looking for any advice. Also, I have in mind a few locations that I want to look at on a map and be able to get the coords for, without physically going there. Is there a site that will let me do that? Thanks in advance. Tim
  12. NiceFamily, There have been two placed in the last 3 days in your neck of the woods: Lightening Bug Re-Lit (GCGF6W) Just Off I-77 (GCGEXM) I drove from Warren to be the first to find each of these. I'm not sure where exactly you are located, but they both should be fairly close to you. Have fun. Tim
  13. To echo what Team Lawrence said above, I flew on USAir from Las Vegas to Pittsburgh just the other day (7/2/03). There was a guy across the aisle from me that was using a GPS receiver right up against the window and he kept excitedly showing his travelling companion what I assume to have been our speed and such. She was less than enthused. The flight crew, however, said nothing to him about it.
  14. Does anyone have any info on this year's GPS Goldrush? The site www.GPSGoldRush.com says check back in early 2003. I made the trip from Ohio for last year's Goldrush and am looking forward to this year's. If anyone has any info, let me know. Thanks. Tim
  15. I have decided that maybe ExpertGPS is the way to go, but I have a question. If I don't have Internet access when I will be mapping, is there a way to download and save the appropriate maps so ExpertGPS can show my routes on a topo map? I will be downloading ExpertGPS tonight, but I am wondering if I can map without net access. Thanks in advance... Tim
  16. Say I have a collection of coordinates and I want to input them into my laptop and see a map of all those coordinates relative to my current position. Everytime I turn around I see another program for GPS maps etc., and I am curious as to what programs are recommended and which are not. Any advice you all can give a newbie would ge greatly appreciated. Thanks... Tim
