Could we have an option to *not* have permalinks? When I go to my list of caches and click on one of them, it takes me to my most recent log for that cache. I don't go back to caches I've found to read my old logs, I go to them to see who else has found them and read what they've written.
It was also awkward maneuvering around: an owner asked me to edit a log on his cache and to get to it took more clicks than it used to. I used to just go to My Cache Page, click on the cache, scroll to my post and edit it. Now I go to My Cache Page, click on the cache, go to my most recent log, click on the cache, go to the cache page, scroll to my post and edit it.
Please can we have an option to disable this??

Looking for a place to start the search sucks. I didn't get into this activity to navigate roads, I got into it to hike and seek little containers hidden wherever.
If you have to leave the parking coords out of your cache page to make it more challenging, you didn't do a very good job hiding your cache.

I think you're kidding yourselves if you think any productive conversation can come out of this forum without some kind of peace-making happening.
Your looking for ways to make this work without acknowledging the damage that's been done is short-sighted. No one is going to believe that new "rules" will help when they're still hurting from the whole fracas. I predict your "variation" on the game will get a very cold reception.
And I still want an apology from the pirates for the ruckus they've caused.

Let's hear an apology from the pirates first for all the bother they've caused.

Heh, I just looked at the cache in question again and someone else came after me and found it. So now I'm on a mission. I *will* find that cache, or it'll kill me.One thing I've discovered: the second I believe the cache isn't there, I may as well write my NF log.
As long as you believe it's there you WILL find it.
Good luck!

I like to have as much information as possible before I set off after a cache. I don't enjoy navigating in the car and so I'm one of those (rare?) people who appreciates parking coords.
I also base my decision on whether and when to look for a cache on the cache description. Poor spelling and grammar make me hesitate (if you can't be bothered to use spell-check, how careful are you going to be with your site selection and cache maintenance?) and clues like "our first hide" and "we just wanted to set one" make me especially leery.
Not that I won't look for these caches, but I tend to wait and see what others find first. Some first-timers set excellent caches and some "classic" cachers set lame ones and you can only decide for yourself-- but I'll sit back and wait a while when presented with "Their are some kewl views for photo's. If you see the stump you went to far."

Good point. It could be stated that any cache greater than a 4 on either difficulty or terrain can not be pirated, since it does add another level to the cache while it is in the "looted" stage. OR if the cache hider is notified prior to the pirating, the cache page itself could be updated with the pertinent information in the description so that the next person would have to be willing to settle for "TNLNSL" or to spend the extra effort to recover the loot from the pirates.
I would like to state for the record that I am in no way collaborating with Ju66l3r in fine-tuning the theivery the pirates are indulging in. I believe Ju66l3r has missed the point of my post which is that "pirate caching" is a nuisance and using other people's caches to play your own game without the express permission of the cache owner is thoughtless and can lead to all sorts of problems.

I still think that the rules as they are listed at piratecaching.com (and have been applied in at least 3 cases) make a solid start for a valid addition to geocaching.I hope this doesn't become a common variant and I'll tell ya why. I recently revisited a cache with some friends. It was only a two mile hike in but this cache was after another two mile hike and rock climb. I was pretty beat. I can only imagine my disgust when finding the second cache and realizing I had another hike and find ahead of me when all I wanted to do was sign the book and get back to the car. I wouldn't feel like I could walk away and NOT get the pirate cache: I'd feel the need to set the cache straight by restoring the contents.
Perhaps these work better with quick and easy finds. I really hope they don't take off around here...

How do I drop off a TB in a cache? I liked that I could just select it out of my inventory.

As someone who enjoys creating variants on this game (Finders Keepers, Scavenger Hunt, Fox Hunt) I've been trying to decide how the pirates went wrong in what COULD have been an interesting variant on geocaching. And the best I can figure out is that you guys broke trust. We have certain expectations when we set and seek caches and the pirates messed with that too much. We weren't expecting it and when we said we didn't like it, the pirates didn't respect that: they just directed us to their rules to show us it was really okay.
Well, it wasn't okay. And the pirates haven't done much to repair the broken trust as far as I can tell.
In order for this to have worked I think there needed to be some announcement that the pirates were coming to our area and give people a chance to decide if they wanted to participate or not.
But that seems like it wouldn't have been fun for the pirates. Which makes me wonder what their real motivation is...
quote:
It's ironical for someone to comment on the actions of others when he, himself, has setup the architecture for these misguided intentions to spawn these pirate games.Could it be that all this is a personal vendetta against Jeremy? I suspect so. In which case, you've alienated any moderate people who may have agreed with your arguments against gc.com and brought together folks who normally wouldn't agree with each other.
GC.com may lose some people to that N site but it's hardly going to weaken them.
The Pirates have done little except ruin another "variant" on the game and made themselves unwelcome, to boot.
Oh, and next time you want to "punish" Jeremy leave the rest of us out of it.

August 27 by Peanut Butter Brigade (0 found) [owner of cache]Thanks to everyone for leaving extra trinkets behind in our cache. The geocaching pirate emailed us with coordinates for a cache filled with new loot. Chorse found that for us today, and she'll be placing the contents in our Dragonfly Pond cache this evening.
Chorse, you deserve a round of applause!
clap clap CLAP CLAP clap clap CLAP CLAP clap
Bravo!!!!
Granted, this is just one log of the three but it sounds like the owner was happier with the cacher who restored the contents of his/her cache than the pirates for providing a "new dimension" to the game.
Maybe what the "official" pirates are doing doesn't deserve the lynching most cachers are working up to but they've sailed out into uncharted seas and must face the consequences.
The pirates may be having fun with this but the fact remains that most of the owners of the caches are displeased with the pirates actions. You can talk all you like about how this is "adding something to the game" but until you can SHOW the cache owners this, you're just going to be wasting your breath.
Would I be furious if one of my caches was looted? No. Would I be put out at the extra work it created? Yes. I have enough to do already: please don't make me go out and check my caches if it's not necessary. (And don't tell me it wouldn't be necessary: any responsible cache owner checks on her cache when something goes awry.)

This game is open enough for a cacher to be creative without breaking the community's trust.

It's comical to watch everyone who gets really upset about these things, since when it is done correctly there's little difference between a "pirated cache" and a "multi-cache" AND the prize is bigger (and there's still "booty" for the kids). As BrianSnat said, if I'd wanted to set a multi-cache, I'd've done so.
The effect the pirates are having on ME is making me re-think how elaborate I want to make my caches. I didn't put all that work into my caches just so some scummy pirate could mess with it.
If it's possible to join in the private topic, I'd very much like to, please.

I couldn't help sending them an email. It probably won't help but I had to say something.
I titled it "Where's the Blood?"
"I mean, what's the challenge in plundering
caches? Are you guys bored with finding them? Then set a few!
You're cowards. There's no risk here, no daring
required on your part. Someone finds you, what
will they do? Nothing.
All you're doing is creating a nuisance.
Whoo-hoo! Way to go big manly pirates!
The true adventurers pity you.

Should a geocoin or travel bug (traveler) be placed in a cache by someone other than the traveler's owner with a note that it be saved for someone specific who is not, in someway identified in the traveler's instructions?Yes.

Is a geocoin or travel bug (traveler) fair game once it has been placed in a cache that is not an intermediate or final destination as designated by the traveler owner?Of course. Unless it has someone else's name on it.

If you found this traveler would recording its number, leaving it in a cache, then logging it as a find feel like a "real" find to you?I assume you mean leaving it in the same cache in which you discovered it. It probably wouldn't feel like a "real" find but them's the breaks.
quote:
Would you feel denied if you could not take the traveler to place in another cache or otherwise be consistent with the traveler owner's instructions? That's mostly why I don't collect TB. If they don't have their destinations attached to them it's impossible to know what to do with them. If I know the TBs destination or goal ahead of time AND I can further it to its goal, I will take it. Otherwise I leave it for someone else.
quote:
Does the recipient have the obligation to beat the competition to the cache?Nope. It's theirs and they can come collect it at their convenience. Could take hours, could take months. Doesn't matter. If it's clearly labelled for someone else, it's not mine to take.
Also, this is loaded question. If it has their name on it, how could they have "competition" for it? Do you have "competition" for your birthday presents??

A great cache has passed from our midst. Let us bow our heads for a moment to remember all those special caches that through park regulations, plundering or neglect have been lost to us.

Geocaching by Bike?

Don't forget this. I got mine a couple weeks ago and it's made biking while caching *much* easier. No more riding one-handed down a rocky slope or watching the GPS fly out of a pocket when I hit a rough patch.
