  1. See bold, really? How do you do this, I have it but haven't really got my head right round GSAK as yet but as I live on the coast that would be handy, circles for pqs don't work quite right when you are on the edge. Check out this pdf file GSAK101. It shows you some basics of pocket queries and GSAK, including polygon filtering. The guy that created the pdf does a bunch of events for learning about pocket queries and GSAK, if he ever holds one near you, it would be worth attending. Edit to add: The section on polygon filters begins on page 31 of the pdf file. Thank you Tom Toad, I had used the 101 guide from the GSAK website but once I got past actually getting the PQs on to GSAK and back into a sorted GPX file I decided I had learnt enough for the day, I did notice they referenced a 201 guide at the end but figured I had all the knowledge I needed for now. But that link looks great, it has piccys. Will give it a go. ps as I had seen a 101 guide before, I wasn't actually sure if knowchad was being reeaallly sarcastic
  2. Correct! Had another word with the fixer last night and that was what was going on. I guess as the screen brightness seems to be the the thing that drains battery most, the fact that it didn't work meant the power lasted. I have found similar with my SamsungGS in the caching field. Geobeagle uses the screen time out rather than other apps I have used which keep the screen active and the battery lasts soooo much longer. On the plus side fixer said it was a very simple job to mend. Hopefully I can avoid using his services as I instantly obtained a good robust case with a deep lip around the screen although I have been very careful with it so far, my worst fear is dropping it off a bridge rather than on the ground, there is something in the subconcious about holding it suspended over water which makes you grab it back and treat it like you would a baby, I wish could attach a wrist strap.
  3. See bold, really? How do you do this, I have it but haven't really got my head right round GSAK as yet but as I live on the coast that would be handy, circles for pqs don't work quite right when you are on the edge. On a side note since I have been looking at caches on the live map on my phone, I have got so used to being able to touch the icon and see the info, I have noticed myself trying to do this with paper maps when driving, I keep poking the page and nothing happens . It would be great if there was an interactive map that would tell you with a touch what that historic site you have just passed is or what that symbol mean rather than having to flick to the key or google the are and guess at the landmark. I wonder..........
  4. I don't think it would be bad at all, these things happen, others have stumbled on them before. As long as you understand the game and respect the pieces, which you will do now you know about it. Even if it might feel feel like cheating it would be definately cool for you if it was the final co-ordinates to a particularly evil puzzle multi (I can't do puzzles ) but makes sure you make a note of the GC cache number when you find it so you can log it and come back to tell all (not all, I mean not the final location then we could all cheat and that would be bad).
  5. Err no, I myself might not be that technically minded but I know an iphone when I see it, and it did it when it was in our house waiting to be dropped back to its owner too. Something else must have been going on then, every time the alarm went off, they shut the phone down (or thought they did), the next morning off went the foghorn again. I guess not being able to see anything on the screen makes it hard to know but I was just trying answer the question you posed - not much and not long.
  6. Am I missing something addisonbr? I think you are in the camp of 'we should try and promote geocaching in as, environmentally friendly, leave no trace, light, as we can to avoid land managers banning it'? If so why was it you started this thread that highlights the damage/impact/(insert whichever word you feel appropriate)? I think I have gathered that it wasn't you who first spotted the tracks visibility and advertised the fact, just brought it to the forums? And I know ignoring issues doesn't make them go away but creating a 7 page thread for any land manager to read? & Yes I also realise you could never have known it would rumble on this long... For what its worth (not much I know ), as a complete outsider from the uk knowing nothing about desert, nor likely to ever come to this particular part of the world, some of the responders that can't see what a bad impression their responses might give to land managers from anywhere in the world, who, on first hearing about geocaching from a potential CO, might happen upon these forums in an attempt to find out more about the game they ahve been convinced by said CO is so very low impact, have to be living in cloud cuckoo land. Its not about this particular example, its the image that flaunting/dismissing the result gives. Although I also realise I am about to push it back to the top of the thread list to a more prominent position
  7. In th UK here but a friend of ours had his screen crack. Was told he could get it repaired for £120, now he is a farmhand (why would a farmer take an I phone to work with him you ask, so did I!) and it was pretty busted up all over anyway so he decided not to bother and just replace it. We were then chatting to another mate who initially trained in PC repairs, he was getting more and more people wanting him to fix their laptops, so he did some more training, and now people want him to fix their phones. Not having the experience in itty bitty things like this he was intrigued and said if the bloke didn't mind he would like to have a go. £6 for the replacement screen and an hour of his time to work it out and replace it. Unfortunately for this little phone it turned out the LCD underneath had also been damaged in the drop (again only £20 odd to buy replacement) and while the second mate was willing to have a go at this the first had already set his heart on a blackberry!! You Tube searches show how to do most things! Edit: the funny thing was that with the screen out of action you couldn't do anything with the phone and he had his distinctivly loud alarm set for 5.30am with over ride for power off. So until second mate fixed it he was rudely awoken every morning with a foghorn
  8. What you really mean Mr Lifeboat is you want a way to sit in front of your pc and gloat - easily! If you were out there hiding more caches you could collect even more favourite points! And I wouldn't be sitting here trying to decide where me and Bessie should go today.
  9. Well done, I have never understood why people are often so reluctant to admit they were wrong when challenged, and I am not being sarcastic, many on these forums seem unable to understand mistakes are made/when they should give up . I haven't hid any caches yet, I am sure will, but part of the reason is because the KB and guidelines seem to need fine toothcombing to ensure they are completely understood, I have to do enough of that for work. Carry on thinking up different ideas for caches.
  10. quote name='DazDnFamily' 4. Geocache placements do not deface or destroy public or private property. quote name='DazDnFamily' The Alien Head series of caches has a thread running on this forum, with clear photographic evidence of a blatant violation of a rule, and nobody from GS had cracked down to correct it. (Which in this case means acrhiving those caches, or someone with a rake fixing the newly made trails out there.) If this cache was denied for breaking a rule, how is that one not being dealt with? snip This is pretty well black and white.
  11. Not really as you have already logged that you destroyed the logbook!! However I understand the reluctance to put a shared usb in your laptop. No idea if this is considered adequate though, I wouldn't be able to log it I don't have a laptop and I aint dragging an extension cable and desktop out there.
  12. What a load of twaddle! The cache in question was a 35mm with room for a small pencil. ALSO, Bring you own pen should be on the page, IT IS NOT A HINT! Fair enough! In your situation it may have been a load of bunkum!, in my experience it has actually given a hint to what you are or are not looking for
  13. Oh definately, thats a good one, I have to try and hold back on the babble, the glazed eyes are becoming too obvious. On a slightly side note I was out yesterday with a friend and bumped into a couple Bessie works with, she says 'hello, what are you up to?' (we had our suspicions, hanging around a cache site) wife says 'Well I am out for a walk, HE is doing something weird!' At which we point we gave him a hint She went on to clarify that she thought it was great as she could never get him out of the house before, having a small baby now it is a definate bonus to her, apparently he works with GIS and mapping so once discovered he was quickly hooked.
  14. If you're talking about what I think you're talking about then go to the forum (click here and scroll right to the bottom and there's a legend on the right hand side. EDIT: and I think (but may be wrong) that any of those icons which look like they have a bit of paper clipped to the top right are threads which you've posted to. Oh yes, thank you, I obviously get sidetracked before I get down there!
  15. Oh and BYOP isn't always a stupid hint as it can give an idea of the cache size. If its listed as a micro this could be a film canister with a tiny pencil in it but BYOP might suggest you are looking for a nano. And just to be a bit more helpful, for the OP, in case you didn't know, listings as micros are generally film canisters or anything smaller, what is referred to as nanos in the forum and elsewhere, are much smaller even the size of a pencil rubber but as yet there is no size listing for them, so BYOP, might mean 'this ones tiny'!.
  16. FTF - first to find LTB/LTC or TTB/TTC - Left travelbug/coin or took travelbug coin Are my contributions because I would like to ask another question. I would like to know what the icon to the left of each forum thread listing mean, can't find an explanation anywhere, have been wondering for a while but didn't think it worth starting a new thread for.
  17. I found one where you had to then move on to get the key to unlock it, actually a bunch of about 30 keys and only 1 fit, thankfully we started at the right end! Another where you had to move on to find a tool box to get into the cache, which you needed 2 of the tools, used simultaneously, that would have been tricky if I had been on my own. I and all other finders think these were great caches and something a little out of the ordinary. Another one I have done was like Don B's. Not much point in pointing you in the direction of the cache pages as you have no idea of the style from them. They were all a complete suprise which added to the fun. I can't imagine that anyone finding either of the first two I mention would have taken the tools but you just can't judge people on your own standards. The tools would be useful, the keys less so, so the tips about having the tools hiding place on the way out from the cache is a very good idea to try and reduce the accidental or otherwise ruin of your hide. Edited as I was trying to be careful not to give the game away for any determined cheaters, but I nearly did, almost. Gulp.
  18. I took the sun cream out of my bag in middle of October. Only to find I needed it still!! Not that I am complaining. Still finding that natural nylon fleece lined jacket is too dadgum hot for walking. Ooh didn't realise that wasn't allowed wondered what dadgum represented, cant we have an english filter.
  19. I am still new to this. When I first started I picked up a travel bug. Valdemars Bee http://www.geocaching.com/track/details.aspx?guid=09a918e7-69bf-410b-a481-1788e630cf67 I loved the idea of TBs, so on finding my first one I excitedly picked it up , but once I had it, and got home and saw its mission and purpose, I felt very nervous . It has quite a personal mission and I was terrified, like other before, and no doubt after, me of not placing it somewhere it got lost or stolen, Also I didn't see how I could possible help its mission. I know once it is placed and out of the owners hands and ours we have to let them go, but still, we care. So I was delighted to see that after just a few 'handlers' he has made the first part of his mission by pure chance. Which at the end of the day is all they have, if i hadn't put him where I did and so on........... So 'Good luck Valdemar!'
  20. Would it work/help/make it more legal if you checked with individual cachers before uploading the video of them?
  21. i would have thought that people are a unlikely to log a bug as 'missing' incorrectly as only people who are really interested in the trackables are going to utilise the system. I would never mark mising unless I was absolutely certain. It will happen, but less often than some anticipate. Would this enable you to see how many trackables have gone missing from a particular cache as well, by viewing past trackables you could then see the ghosts couldnt you? I doubt CO's would be keen on this idea but I have got a bit nervous about where I place the few I have moved. Then you could identify the 'safer' or more succesful caches if you wished to.
  22. Funnily enough I just worked out how to do this before seeing this thread feeling rather pleased with myself, I agree it is a workaround though, still feeling smug. Not having much involvement in databases before I found GSAK a bit daunting but help and instruction files certainly got me to manage the basics, incidently I use only a smart phone.
  23. I also downloaded the new manual for the app yesterday, its much clearer than the old one and quite humourous too It also has clear instructions for newbies on logging finds & trackables, different types of logs including when NM & NA logs should be used etc which might help clear up some of the issues with smartphone loggers (if they read it of course)
  24. Genuine question. "You agree that you will not use any robot, spider, scraper or other automated means to access the Site for any purpose without our express written permission." If you just used it with PQ's for cache pages and not the live map would that solve the scraping argument as you are not using a robot etc even if the app can? Doesn't address the issue that the live map is the feature most would like to see on the official app that might stop many using c:geo but.....
