  1. Hi, Boudica. I'm pretty sure the scripts can be used in chrome and opera, but as I'm a firefox user it's what I know, so you need to start with firefox, then install the greasemonkey addon, restart firefox and install the 2 scripts, the Google Maps one and the Ordnance Survey one. Next time you visit a geocaching.com map page you should have the extra maps as options on the right hand side dropdown. Good luck I see i didn't realise you had to be using firefox, never tried anything other than windows IE. But now typing this on newly installed firefox browser. Thank you very much Frosty(ies) that's very nice seeing the OS maps, I love OS maps, what else can I do ?
  2. 3. Have you also downloaded GPS Status app - I don't understand the technicalities behind it but it was recommended to me and certainly helped. Saying that this does sometimes still happen I have got used to it being a down side to my phone it normally jumps back to the correct distance soon enough. It once said I was 5K miles away! I use a galaxy S but a friend uses a supposedly 'less smart' version of the galaxy and has no such problems! 4. On the cache description page on the phone, scroll down to between the description and hint fields (if there is one) and there you find Waypoints and an 'add waypoint' button. Hit that then modify the co-ords displayed and save adding names or notes etc as you wish.
  3. Please help an ignoramus. How do you install greasemonkey scripts, they just error whenever I have tried to investigate? One bonus of the map change for me is I discovered you can import gpx files to google earth and they then display the caches with the cache name beside. Its looks a bit messy but I much prefer it to having to click on the icon to see which cache is which as you have had to do with the GS maps, a simple click on caches then shows the description. I am sure you all knew this but I like it. The other issue is that it doesn't seem to show found caches as smileys but as I haven't an awful lot it isn't an issue for me to remember what I have or haven't found. Another site I have used for a while is Gmap pedometer, based on google maps, allows you to easily track a path, it indicates you can export your track as a gpx but I cannot find a way to import gpx then you could use it to do what alot seem to want, easily see the milage for a certain cache or series. Anyone know if this is possible or can I do this easily with another map setup.
  4. I just turned on radio 4 and heard the tail end of a discussion about geocaching on 'PM' about 5.40 will have to listen again!! All I heard was a woman talking about trying to find a cache on 29 Feb.
  5. looks like the maps are being fixed/altered/played with. According to this link
  6. Am I right in thinking GS describes cache size in volume, if so its inferring they prefer listings based on the actual cache size not the total size. I have seen some listings that go along the lines of cache size listed as micro/? but in the description it explains that you are looking for a camouflaged micro, eg: bison in a log, which gives you some idea that you are not necessarily looking for a micro sized 'thing'. Personally I do use the size to help determine what to look for and where to look so it all depends on how sneaky you want it to be. I think both arguments outlined above are valid for different people depending on how, with who and why they cache and how they filter the caches to look for. So, as seems par for the course in this game, I doubt you will please everyone. If people pick caches purely by filtering out '?' and micros and dont read descriptions they might miss out on what sounds like a fun hide, equally those who don't read the description might be misled in what they are hunting for, both scenarios are determined by user choice and error and not yours IMHO. BTW I have had a similar idea.
  7. Not bothered contributing to this before because I had nothing helpful to say and don't find it particularly bothersome, I am sure there are others who feel the same way, but to reassure tptb that is happening to more users than those posted I am doing so now. I don't have any technical knowledge nor do I know how to take screen captures to illustrate the issues, but I have been seeing the avatar scrambling since the problem first arose, I notice it about once a week (could be happening more often I just don't spot it) mostly avatars but occasionally on posted photos. Whenever I have noticed it seems to only be scrambling of images that are meant to be on that page they just appear in the wrong place. I use windows IE v8 and XP. Most recently today it was in an OT thread 'I love my car', where gitchee-gummees avatar appeared instead of Planets teardrop van - as I said its not bothersome but that time it did confuse me as to why planet tows gitchee gummee and calls them her little guy.
  8. I nearly bought one of those thinking it would make a fun traveller, factory shop counter, everyone in the queue stared in disgust, then tried them themselves, they all made the same noise though, pigs, cats, dogs! I got quite attached to jumbo and didn't want to let him go, buddha misses his friend, now he seems to be stuck (or missing ) edit:sp
  9. Oh I like those tricks, its true hidden things always relax their guard when you aren't frantically trying to find them - or at home if I have been searching for something if & ask for help they suddenly appear under your nose - perhaps I should rope passing muggles in on the act. My only trick is take someone with better geosense than me along. My husband (not a keen cacher) sometimes lets me get one or to if we are on a drive somewhere new then always goes 'Is it over there in that tree/hole/under that pile etc' while I am still trying to work out what direction I am sposed to be going, ruins all my fun
  10. I'm with Happy Humphrey on this, we may all be able to find out information before hand, or when we reach our destination, for ourselves, but if someone has already done the research or has the local knowledge its always nice if they can share it, which is obviously all Moote wants to do, I know I would appreciate it. I have never attended an event, camping or otherwise, but its always good when cache pages mention nearby refreshment options and especially parking. I know when I set out a nice country series in my favourite place to walk (as so many series setters seem to say) I will make sure I give info on local amenities and in particular parking details even if it seems blatently obvious. If it where I walk often and I know the place I want other people to enjoy it too, I don't want them wasting half and hour, annoying the local farmer or spending the walk worrying about whether they will have a mirror swiped off by passing tractors. So many times I have driven round in circles trying to find a safe place to leave the car for a couple of hours and end up squeezing it onto a verge only to find when we leave there is a good spot down the road, yes I could have tried harder but if the CO already knows a good spot, let people know, if there isn't one let us know that too, then we can work around it. Sorry that ended up being a rant about 'expecting' certain details didn't it, which wasn't what I intended, I don't expect my hand held at all, but all the same - If you have it, share your knowledge, its free and much appreciated especially by those who aren't local.
  11. That sounds like a good idea seen as Garmin seem to have effectively stolen opencaching off you anyway.
  12. Wow congratulations you must be a lovely Mum to have such a lovely son. When are you going on your trip of a lifetime?
  13. I know skin so soft is highly recomended as a human insect repellent, as I am mosquitos favourite foodstuff I have been wanting to try it for ages but whenever I come accross an avon lady they find out its so popular its sold out.
  14. Ah I see Geobain might have answered my question - if I show up on the audit log but haven't logged it or something and a cache then goes missing then the CO might jump to the conclusion that it was me that stole it (really they do that? they must do). Actually the one I have found might well be missing but it was the sea not me!
  15. I keep seeing this thing with the audit logs come up, why does anyone find it necesary to not show up, it seems to be because some PM CO's find fault with people looking at their caches. Whats that all about? As to PMO caches round here - we have 1 within my immediate caching zone, I have found it (eventually!!) but I looked at it regulary when I DNF it (multiple more times than I recorded ) to see if I could glean any more clues and often check back to see if anyone else has, the idea that the CO might take umbrage with this seems rather odd.
  16. IMHO I would get premium membership hands down, even if only for three months for $10 to see if you get the benefits. As a phone user I got the app but didn't really rate it over others on the market I am afraid, it has a long lag, super drains the battery, just isn't as user friendly and crashes more. I thought a long time about PM and was hesitant at first about as I wasn't sure there were many benefits to a phone cacher. I caved and got 3 months initially and find pocket queries are so much simpler than using data/wifi to download caches. I get much more value out of the PM than the app (I barely ever use it although if I were to be transported out of my normal area by spaceship I guess it might come in handy) I now am able to have all the caches I am likely to want to search for in my immediate area stored for off network use anytime I like with free apps whether c:geo, geobeagle or whatever your choice.
  17. Just realised you wanted natural remedies, I doubt the bombs are natural, we were beyond caring by then. I never came across a method of killing off the eggs that was, but I do remember a method for catching them which cropped up a lot. Placing a bowl of soapy water under a light, the light and warmth attract them and they drown in the soapy water, apparently.
  18. No real idea about preventing them getting on her in the first place, we used to use frontline but since we had an infestation in the house and thus it appeared frontline no longer seemed to work, (our dog is 16 and we thought perhaps the spot on treatments weren't working anymore kind of like over use of anitbiotics??!! we don't really know ) we moved on to flea collars and haven't had a problem since. As for the house infestation we tried all sorts of treatments and the one that worked for us was flea bombs. Kind of like a candle, if I remember rightly you light them, they sort of flare up like a firework then die back to smoulder, you leave the house for 2 hours, go back open up the windows and leave again and its safe to return in half an hour. You need to make sure you have enough to cover the area of the house, ours is only small so we managed with 2 but it will depend. Both me and the dog suffer from flea allergies, the bombs weren't that cheap but it was so worth it. They claim to kill the eggs as well which seems to be the problem with most other treatments. Apparently warmth and vibration (hoovering particulary) will revive long laid eggs even well after the original culprits are long gone. So the worst spot in our house seemed to be the pc tower sitting on the carpet. And as for ticks - urgh - so glad our dog doesn't seem to attract them even though we regularly cache near deer and sheep - just the idea of them makes me feel queasy - nasty biting swelling spiders - he has only ever had one on his snout, it was incredibly hard to get rid of with a tick remover as he wasn't keen (understatement) on us prodding him there, so we had to use less approved/safe methods, we called it his pet but that still didn't make me able to look at him till we got rid.
  19. [quote name='The Real Boudica.' In the GS app from NiraD's advice in another thread 'When viewing the cache description, select either of the following: Navigate to Geocache > Map > Menu > Add Waypoint Navigate to Geocache > Compass > Menu > Destination > Add Waypoint... ' Waypoint is the term for new co-ordinates.
  20. Hi jammy dodgers. Other ways are: In c:geo on the cache listing page between the description and hint fields you will see waypoints - hit this and you can add the new co-ordinates here. In the GS app from NiraD's advice in another thread 'When viewing the cache description, select either of the following: Navigate to Geocache > Map > Menu > Add Waypoint Navigate to Geocache > Compass > Menu > Destination > Add Waypoint... ' It took me a little while to work my way around cgeo to start with but then preferred it to GS app but recently have enjoyed using geobeagle especially for its preservation of battery life - but only since I got premium membership - I found it was pretty cumbersome to use without pocket queries, although now thinking about it I haven't tried to put new waypoints in that one and can't see a way to do so - Mmm anyone know?
  21. Some will argue that if the checklist data appeared elsewhere then other searchers wouldn't see it (but hey thats their problem if they don't read the whole page (barring those without phones or paperless gps)) but on the other hand it could be made anonymous which might remove the percieved reluctance to post NM logs? Edit to say that on second thoughts I guess it would be quite easy to figure out the offending finder.
  22. This would be a great addition, currently I use http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/ when I want to know rough distances but its a bit of a pain having both screens open. I assume that this is based on google maps so it shouldn't be so hard to implement if someone has already managed it. (says a programming dullard)
  23. I'm not particularly inventive when it comes to picking screen names and always end up regretting the choices I make so didn't want to use any others from the past. I have an interest in the Boudica legends and a friend who shares that interest often calls me as Boudica had just phoned me up. Unfortunately that was already taken , I got very indignant with the pc, hence I was then 'THE REAL BOUDICA' in shouty capitals. I soon changed the capitals as it seemed too loud when I saw it on the forums (and by then I was feeeling less put out) and had to add the '.' as the website didn't accept that non capitalised boudicas were very different to capitalised ones.
  24. I am assuming you have a gps of some sort other than the phone?? Why not just use the phone app to get the cache info and the gps for hunting or is that stating the obvious
