  1. LOL I'm just an attention seeker. Honestly though your experiences with paypal just go to show everyone what they are really like. I've never known a company like them for bitng the hand that feeds them. I hope the therapy goes well - you should ask if they will give you a discount if they can help you out with your geocoin addiction at the same time
  2. I do hope your post was for everyones benefit and not directed at me. All i did was copy their AUP from the site. Paypal are well renowned for the heavy handed approach and lack of customer service. I guess your post should serve as a warning to anyone considering using them as a payment option for pre-sales. My heart goes out to you for having to go through all that.
  3. Paypal will never know its a pre-sale unless someone blows the whistle on the coin maker. But once that happens then the coin maker doesn't have a leg to stand on if they are outside the 20 day limit. I agree though that its hit and miss whether people bother reporting anything to paypal. Most people aren't aware of the AUP. It seems that some people use it to stick a knife in the ribs of some of the reliable manufacturers but don't bother with those who are stretching the whole pre-order thing out.
  4. Is that the case all the time? You can use Paypal for pre-sales subject to some stringent conditions - that it looks like most people are flouting. Here is an extract from the Paypal Acceptable Use Policy: Anyone using paypal to accept payment for an item that won't be delivered within 20 days risks having their account frozen or closed and a hefty fine for breaching the AUP for receiving payments.
  5. Done - image uploaded and page changed to hopefully make more sense.
  6. We don't do pre-sales ourselves becuase of several reasons, most of which have already been mentioned in posts above. In reply to the OP we have not seen any delays in the mint we use and their productivity has and still is spot on. I can't comment on why some companies are experiencing these problems as I do not know their circumstances but so far we've not noticed any slow down or delays from China. Communication is the key though if there are delays especially if you have customers who have paid upfront expecting their product on a certain date - its good business sense and common courtesy after all.
  7. Just checked on the openmapsource website and there isn't one already available to download so someone needs to compile one from there. If Martin can manage to compile one (not sure how much work it involves) I can certainly give it a home for everyone to download it from. Ian
  8. The updated files are being updated as I type this. Thanks for compiling them for eveyone. Link: http://www.ukgeocachers.co.uk/garminoverlays/index.php Ian
  9. Thanks for the heads up Birdman. I am now much wiser - having googled the word 'torrent' I can understand what Deci means about one of the posts above. I've obviously had a sheltered upbringing LOL.
  10. A little confused OpenStreetMap is opensource mapping data that is free the exchange and use. Is OpenStreetMAp available via BitTorrent? No idea what BitTorrent is but you can find out more about it here: http://www.openstreetmap.org/

  12. Guilty as charged - I don't know if a passing mod would be able to split the thread or not. Be very, very carefull with buying "second hand" software on e-bay as it is very easy to get burnt. Use all the normal common sense check like their feedback score etc and read the ads very carefully. You can havign said that pick up a bargain if you are carefull. Ian
  13. You can see a pic of it here Emma, http://www.geocoincollection.com/cointrade...=918&page=1
  14. Whilst I know that there are nefarious characters out there - do not underestimate the nievity of an ex-muggle (newbie cacher). I think that often its an education issue with new cachers. The trackable item logging on geocaching.com is confusing at best and whilst people can find out about caching from lots of different places geocaching.com doesn't seem to be going out of its way to promote trackable items and more importantly what to do with them. Lots of new cachers pick up geocoins thinking that they are a lucky geoswag find. Kathy has had two phone calls in the shop this year alone from new cachers who have not known what to do with geocoins that they have found. One was even confused by the fact that he couldn't activate it as it seemed to be attached to someone elses account If we've had two contact us how many haven't bothered and just pocketed coins thinking they were fair game. There is a feature on the geocaching.com website that allows you to print out a little leaflet to attach to a trackable item that has a little bit of info about how to log it as a find and to highlight the fact that it isn't just another trade item. I strongly urge everyone who releases any sort of trackable item into the wild to laminate a sheet with info or your contact details on it to attach to the thing to prevent any confusion with newly ex-muggles.
  15. I totally agree they are awesome and really easy to install. I'll add a list of Garmin models that they are known to work with. If anyone is using the maps with a GPS that isn't on the list could you please drop me a line and I will update the GPS list. If anyone wants to find them they can be downloaded from here: http://www.ukgeocachers.co.uk/garminoverlays/index.php Ian
  16. Just uploaded the countor one onto my Colorado and what a difference it has completely transformed the map into a usefull tool now that looks superb with the contour lines. Many thanks for the maps. I have sent a reply to your e-mail and the files are on the server now.
  17. OK, rather than upload them to one of my other domains and hosting services which would skew my webstats, I have uploded the files to Diino and Airset, details below: http://talkytoaster.diinoweb.com/files/ File Name: 080702-UK-GMAPSUPP.zip contains 080702-UK-GMAPSUPP.IMG Size: 41,020KB Description: UK Maps (No Contours) Alternate Link: https://www.airsetpublic.com/files/080702-U...?i=OYXyLFlbEpYE File Name: 080702-UK+Contours-GMAPSUPP.zip contains 080702-UK+Contours-GMAPSUPP.IMG Size: 141,644KB Description: UK Maps (With Contours) Alternate Link: https://www.airsetpublic.com/files/080702-U...?i=cdARiCzmRWdW Please Note: Both these services have limited connectivity and/or bandwidth restrictions so please only download the files if you plan to use them. Download the file you are interested in, unzip it, and save the unzipped file as GMAPSUPP.IMG and then upload it to your Garmin [make sure you have sufficient storage space first]. I use these maps on a Garmin GPSmap60c [non-contour version of map @ 40MB] and an Etrex Legend Hcx [the version with contour data too @ 140MB]. If you have any issues or questions feel free to e-mail me via geocaching.com. If there is sufficient interest then I will make these available on a dedicated hosting service and update the maps at least twice a month. Otherwise if anyone is willing to offer a place to permanently host them then that would be great. Regards, Martin Many thanks for that. I'd be happy to offer up permament storage space for them on our server if you like as we have bags of space. Ian
  18. Same here, I'd be very interested in both if you can arrange it please. Ian
  19. Thinking the same thing myself - well since you can't blatantly cache advertise on here why not I'll be listening in, hopefully she gets on.

  22. I'm midway through setting up a geocaching social networking site that will hopefully make it easy to find local cachers, form caching groups and advertise events.
  23. LOL good point, I was thinking more along the lines of Big Vern with a GPS and a shotgun preventing muggles from finding his hidden cache
  24. A very enjoyable read, its nice to see the press getting most of the story right every now and again. They mentioned all the pertinent points and it seems that articles are going from strength to strength. Now if only Viz could do a geocaching special.....
