  1. I use a Canon 400D or a Canon 40D depending on where I start from. The 400d is what upgraded from for the 40d. It makes it easier because people see and think you just out taking pictures, not looking for a macro in the urban jungle.
  2. First, you have to understand a letterbox hybrid is a different animal than a pure letterbox. If you want to understand letterboxing go to the letterboxing sites with an open mind, not preconceptions from geocaching. For one thing, many boxing enthusiasts consider all trade items trash. They don't want it in their boxes. Ever. Hybrids are part geocache and part letterbox. Some folks like them. Others, like myself, don't see the two hobbies as perfect meshes. I've gotten rid of my hybrids and made them pretty much one or the other. We've got two still listed as hybrids and they do have stamps, but don't have boxing-style clues or listed elsewhere. I just been too lazy to get a friendly reviewer to switch them over to traditionals, yet. For pure letterboxes, it's part of the hobby. While you don't strictly need a signature stamp, it is part of the hobby. For hybrids, you don't really need a stamp though it's part of the fun. Ok. so if its on gc.com, chances are its got both and I could almost treat it like a traditional. Having hte stamp makes it fun
  3. I went to the Letterboxing.org site and looked at the caches here. Are the typical letterbox hybrids just a stamp in addition to a box o swag. Or a completely different way of doing them? Do I need to make/buy a stamp to do these?
  4. PITA or PETA is all fine and good but can we get back to tracking the ducks? I wonder if the zoologists would help us here. If the duck already has a radio coller maybe we could buy a receiver to tell the Clams where to find the duck and retrieve the code that is tatooed some place under its feathers. You think they would help? I must say I dont agree with geoducks, but its its a cache, I'll try to find it once Proud member of PITA Edited for Big ooops, misspell of duck
  5. where are you trying to upload the picture to? A cache page? a log?
  6. Careful. There are a number of PITA members here on the forusm. You don't want to get them riled. Not trying to say anything bad about PITA. They do some good. Just trying to get ducks off the list of things to tag for the sake of geocaching Maybe PITA does, PETA does not. P.I.T.A. is appropriate. That is funny, so then I will not offend PETA. I am a memeber of PITA, Ask my wife Me - "Can we stop here for a cache?" Wife -" your a Pain In the a**." PITA for short I really get my terms messed up quite a bit here, but this is way too funny

  8. uh, maybe you're just too sweet and innocent, but that's kind of a code among a certain subset of people. please don't make me have to explain it to you. I'm all ears. Big, long, furry ears And there I was picturing you as a Knight in Shining White Armour! (I'm sure there's a big Hamster in there somewhere keeping this post on topic ) OMG I think I found my new avitar, or just one for today LOL
  9. Geoducks, must be hard to track those down, especially during migrating season, and where do you keep the activation code? Are we tatooing ducks now to make our sport more enjoyable? Although I am not a member of PITA. I think we need to make a stand now and not let the practice of geoducks continue. Poor little things Expect this to land in Ot soon (edited for editing's sake)
  10. At the moment a solid 8. That's because there are soo many green boxes in my local map and not enough smileys. Once I tame this land of the "cache a plenty" then my obsession should drop to about 3.14 ( Like pi too but that was another thread). Like weeds, you got to take them out as the crop up or you'll never keep up
  11. There are a ton of caches that don't even have a log. They are Virtual caches. So this would be good there to. So like every other cache out there, there are pros and cons, some may like it and some may hate it. If you dont like it, dont seek it. Unless your OCD will not let you leave a green box in your local map, then you have you own demons to fight
  12. I think it was a site called bored.com (or something like that) and there was a link to geocaching.com. this was 2001. I looked for one near me and in Feb of 2001, there might have been 100 on all of LI. (thats a stretch I think) Me and my wife went looking for one and could not find it(found it years later) and gave up. In 2004, I was in Texas for a training and the training got boring. I had my garmin emap with me and rembered geocaching and checked it out. I found 7 that trip and was hooked for the summer. I move to PA in 2005 and went out once or twice and lost interest again. I was at 48 finds. I think 100 was a milestone that people still commented on. April 2008, I got my 300t. It had all the things I needed to cache and I didnt have to bring my palm pilot or print outs. I was on another training trip, this time in Omaha and hit 2 caches out there. I came back home and have hit almost 100 in the last month. I hope to stick around for more than the summer this time :D edited because I wanted to
  13. But, you're the one who wanted to use geotagging to "prove" they were there. Either you care if the log is a fake, or you don't. The only person allowed to take both sides of an issue simultaneously is John McCain. I meant that as a counter to your point about cheating on the EXIf data. I really dont care. I have been to a lot of caches where I have to send a picture of myself at a location, why cant I have a cache where you can take a picture from any angle at that location. And, to prove(or imply) that the picture was taken at GZ, the geotagging of the picture would be required. As a photographer in another hobby, I know there are hundreds of angles that can be taken of the same vase of flowers, each would be different but all at the same place. If you want o go through the trouble of putting in a false tag, and show me a picture taken in Hawaii when the cache is in Kansas (best I can think of at the moment), its up to you. I can delete it or give credit for the comedy of the picture. It would be funny to take the micro container, and say, put it in the nose of Washington @ MT Rushmore for a cache in MD. It would be fun. There are a lot of creative people. But we have strayed a bit, partially my fault. One of the Q's have been answered. Yes the data is retained (Tested it myself). Would I be/Am I the only person that puts it in thier gallery shots? Not really important. Making it part of a cache requirement is not a major twist on the game. But I may do a cache like that, just to make things different. But if locationless caches we all the rage, this would be good to use there as well I know I am jumping around a bit on my stance. But I am seeing some good points in some of the comments and adapting I really just wanted to know if anyone used them or cared.
  14. Since most geotagging is done after the fact, that would be incredibly easy to fake. And nobody fakes real logs? I bet there are tons of people who say they find it and dont. And I bet alot dont get caught. If you want to cheat that fine, its your game. With that said there are limited angels that you can take pictures of the cache. If I have a cache near a farm and your picture shows a skyscraper, its an obvious fake.
  15. I might have just made part of my next mystery cache. And that would be a tough puzzle. . . if it was 2003. Today, it's just one more entry on the "list of the obvious things to look for", along with text in white font, text hidden as an html comment, alt text, micro images, etc., etc., etc. Firefox ExIf Viewer Extension I was only thinking in a Prove you were there type of cache, wher eyou have to send the geotagged picture. I tested out the exit data and saw it was retained Very few cameras can geotag. I believe it's patented and restricted to a single manufacturer... right? On the other hand, anyone with access to decent image editing software (Photoshop, Paint Shop, etc.) can edit the EXIF tags after the fact. You dont even need that. As long as your GPS and camera have their time synced, there are a few free apps out there that will add the tags to them. I think EasyGPS will do it judging from Isonzo Karst's posted link

  18. Thats how I handle it as well. I leave the old ones in there. Nano or otherwise where I can not add logs, I'll put out a maintenance note
  19. Does anyone geotag their cache photos? I plan on doing it, I'm just not sure if GC.com keeps that part of the EXIF data. If you have geotagged your photos on GC, please send me the link to the log so I can see if my app will pick up the Geotag. If this has been covered, please ignore the post and point me in the right place
  20. Mercerburg PA, from my home 1 mile - 1 (placed by me) 5 miles - 16 (3 placed by me) 10 miles - 127 (gave up counting mine) 25 miles - 596 50 Miles - 1627 100 Miles - 8433
  21. I have a few nano's out there, but I also have an equal number(over kill? yes) waiting in the car with new clean logs, so if one fills up, its just a quick drive by to replace and move on. Nano's have a place and most of them are urban
  22. I like macros, if they improve function of the original code. The GSAK macros rock. I always get my photo terms and my geoterms confused. Rephrase - I don't mind the micros
  23. I cant say I hate the macros, I have several out there myself. They help me get out of the office an hour a day. With that said, the swag does usually suck in the larger containers. I usually dont take any. If my daughter is with me, I end up taking some trinket she likes and leaving an extra sig item or two. I think swag wise, my favorites are the sig items. I have to start looking for more of those....when I get a regular container that is
