  1. As a newbie to caching, I took my Grandkids with me, and afterwards explained the general concept to my 36 year old son(Their Father). Roughly I said it equated to letterboxing (which he knew of) with a GPSr. After a small discussion, he pronounced his view as, 'Orienteering for Trainspotters'. Has anybody got a better/funnier three word summation of the game? By the way, he has since started caching with his family, and really enjoys it.
  2. Martin (talkytoaster) pre-loaded these maps onto a microSD card for me yesterday. They arrived this morning, and were loaded into my Garmin Dakota 20. I turned the unit on, and hey presto, there they were. What a thoroughly decent chap he is.
  3. If I can help, I would be pleased to do so. Only a newbie with 12 caches found. I ('Treasure hunt') cache with my grandchildren in England regards, Brian
  4. Yes, I too am using a car satnav (Garmin 1440). I bought it only recently for the car. While I was downloading updates, I discovered geocaching. Similar results as yourself. Found 6 out of 7 I am waiting for a month or so to see if my grandkids lose interest, before looking at the new E trex models, for their paperless capability. Enjoy your new hobby.
  5. And I thought "muggle" was already a code word Indeed it is. However, on our 1st search,we saw some frogs in the undergrowth. I suggested that they say that in order that, I/we can carry on searching. (Seemingly for frogs)
  6. I only discovered geocaching last week, and thought I would try it with my Grandchildren. Two of them visited me on Monday, and went on their 1st 'Treasure hunt.' They loved it when we found the 'treasure'. Another two visited on Wednesday, although the eldest was not interested. We only had time enough to search for 2 caches, and found both. The dissinterested child was gutted, when he found he'd missed out. As it happens, tomorrow we're going to the airshow. (We had already planned to go, before I discovered caching) They demanded, 'Grandad, can we go on a treasure hunt, while we're there?' And so, if you are in the gardens, and come across; 2 Grandparents, 4 parents, and 5 children, just say hello, and ask' 'Have you seen any frogs' (Thats our codeword if muggles are passing) P.S. If you get to the caches before us, can you leave something pink for the girls.
  7. While searching for my 1st cache with 2 Grandchildren, I saw a number of frogs in the undergrowth. I told them what a muggle was. I gave them a code to tell me if any were passing, while I was searching in the undergrowth. They now just say, 'Can you see any frogs Grandad?' Obviously this won't work if you are on your own
  8. I'm a newbie myself, but I have downloaded caches in the same way. I found mine in my favourites. Maybe you should try there 1st. If that doesn't work, perhaps try custom POI's. Let us know the result, for other members who may want to know. Good luck with it.
  9. WOW, WOW, and again, WOW I posted my query less than 24 hours ago, and have had 6 pertinent replies. I haven't even searched for my 1st cache yet (Manchester weather, you know. It's only rained twice this week: once for 4 days, and once for 3 days) Even with this weather, I would have been out at the weekend, had I had a waterproof GPS. Already, I am beginning to think I should have taken up snorting coke, or something less addictive than caching appears to be. I've been browsing the forums, and been amazed at the level of interest in a pastime that, one week ago, I had never heard of. Also the help that is freely offered by all is truely delightful. What a great community I have been blessed to become a part of.
  10. As a complete newbie, in the UK, can I ask how much Premium Membership costs in £'s sterling, and does my bank stiff me in addition to that price? Also, What is the best way to pay Thanks to all, in anticipation.
