  1. ... you have one year to pass the code. But by then the code reqiurement should be gone. Then you will not need to take the code test.

I've not been following this development. The code requirement is expected to go away?

Just for General bands or for all amateur bands?

    The ARRL has proposed:

To drop the code requirement for all but the extra class.

Reintroduce the Novice as an entry level no-code limited HF + VHF and UHF license.

Current techs and tech plus moved to general class, with no additional testing.

    Extra class- no changes.

Proposed changes to the licensing structure can be found on the ARRL website here: (news story: ARRL to Propose New Entry-Level License, Code-Free HF Access)

  2. Interesting idea?:

I propose that all current types of witness posts be made obsolete by putting them underground.

    Solution:

Part 1:  Instead of an above-ground witness post, develop one that can be installed (hammered) into the ground, right next to the disk's cement monumentation.  This underground witness post would be either a specialized piece of metal, or a plastic stake containing a simple passive (non-powered) bit of circuitry (some kind of inductor, perhaps) that would signal a specialized metal detector.

Part 2:  Make a specialized 'metal' detector that specifically detects this type of underground witness post.

An underground witness post, in conjunction with the PID's lat-lon coordinates (with GPS-derived coordinates in the NGS database in the case of non-horizontally-adjusted stations) would be sufficient to find the mark!

With this combination, all marks could be put underground for better security.  Instead of having to be spotted visually, the can be 'seen' by the detector.  The specialized target could even be installed in the cement monumentation.

:P Isn't the point of witness posts to make the mark easier to find? If you have to have special equipment just to find the witness post, you might as well have special equipment that locates the mark as well!

  3. This unit actually isn't all that big :

    Weight & Dimensions

    13 oz./.81 lb., 3.25 H x 6.5 W x 2.0 D in.

    368,5 g, 8,26 h x 16,51 l x 5,1 p (cm)

My question, which I couldn't seem to find the answer to, is whether or not it's battery operated. If it has to be plugged in, that would really limit you while caching!

  4. Now I understand that ExpertGPS does not maintain the maps database. They link to a Microsoft site (the name of which escapes me), but I was hoping for better maps than what I've seen thus far. What's your experience?

The maps provided as a free service of Microsoft's Terraserver. The maps are produced by the USGS, and many have not been updated for years. Most of the topographic mapping programs out there use the same maps (or digital equivalents) in their software.

If you have a beef with the maps, you need to contact the people that make them. You can also become involved with updating the maps. Read these links:

Usgs - The National Map, Formerly USGS Earth Science Corps

U.s. Geological Survey Earth Science Corps (the link in this post has changed- refer to the first thread to see the new web address)

  5. ...the software can only be installed on a single computer or network.

I've even burned copies for friends and they have installed the program with no probs.

 The issue isn't whether or not it will work, the issue is whether or not it's legal. Burning copies of the software for friends is in clear violation of the copywrite or licence agreement.

  6. Well, there are several different Mapsource products available for the Legend. Any of them will give you much more detailed maps for your GPS than the built-in basemap. Topo will give you topographic maps, and Metroguide will give you street maps. The Mapsource program also lets you manage your waypoints, routes, tracks, etc. on your computer.

Mapsource Metroguide will create turn by turn routes on your PC, which you can then download to your Legend. (since the Legend does not autoroute, the routing must be done on your PC before you leave for your trip.)

I personally use MapSource Roads and Recreation (which isn't available anymore). I found a copy on Ebay for about half of the new price. I have found it very useful when "in the field" since the built in basemap lacks detail.

You can view what the maps look like at using the Garmin MapSourse Map Viewer.

  7. Just to add some more info, BMGPX will convert county datasheets from the NGS into GPX format. They WILL NOT have any GC.com logs included! (this is a frequently asked question). There may also be some marks in your data that are not listed on GC.com.

  8. My favorite situation ocurrs when some of the maps have the cache on one side of the river, and other maps have the cache on the other side, and the nearest bridge is 5 miles away.

  9. I can see my own logs, but say I find a benchmark I want to go find, and I want to see logs that others have written about it?

There is an good chance that you are not seeing any "found" logs simply because they have not been found and logged by any cachers!

  10. Ummm, now that Garmin is using a new format to save files, how do I convert them????  ;)  GPSbabel won't recognize the new format.

Within MapSource, you can export as a MPS file too off the File menu. Didn't try it to see if there was anything that didn't get saved, but it's worth a shot.

You also have EasyMPS (see posts above) and I'm sure GPSBabel will do the same. Once GPSBabel does it, I hope that it's added as an option to GSAK too.

    robertlipe????

  11. EasyGPS is a waypoint management program. GSAK, on the other hand is a geocache management program.

GSAK is specifically taylored to geocachers, to use the Geocaching.com's pocket queries to their fullest extent. It enables you to filter caches by distance, difficulty, owner, etc, and export the data to a variety of mapping programs, or to your GPSr.

Download both for free and try them out. You will find GSAK much more powerful for managing geocaching data. You must be a premium member (and receive GPX pocket queries) to realize its full potential though.

  12. Some USB implementations can't support NMEA output and with the GPS18 I understand it does not output NMEA but outputs data using the Garmin USB interface/protocol?

So with the GPS18 if one wants NMEA support then it is either the GPS18 PC or GPS18 LVC versions but it appears all the 3 GPS18 version can be configured to output binary phase data.

    Cheers, Kerry.

    Yes, it appears that way.

    Quote from http://www.garmin.com/products/gps18oem/index.jsp

The GPS 18 is offered in three different cable configurations: A-style USB, DB-9 pin serial with 12-volt cigarette lighter adapter (PC), or bare wire (LVC). The PC and LVC versions both default to output data in the industry standard NMEA 0183 data format, but may also be user programmed to output data in the GARMIN proprietary format. The USB version produces data only in the GARMIN proprietary format. All three versions of the GPS 18 come complete with non-volatile memory for storage of configuration information, a real-time clock, and raw measurement output data for sophisticated customer applications. The LVC version additionally provides a pulse-per-second logic level output whose rising edge is aligned to the UTC second within 1 microsecond. The USB 2.0 full-speed version of the GPS18 is also compatible with USB 1.1 full-speed hosts.
  13. This is not a find, yet.  Think I'll try next week when I head that direction if the home owner is agreeable.

HK0501 Benchmark Log. <_< Was disappointed that I could not see HK0501.

Since there is a house on top of the mark, how usable is this mark in the real world? I'm assuming you can't put any surveying equipment over the mark, so isn't this mark pretty much useless? (until the house is removed?)

  14. Added ability for the user to associate file links or Internet addresses with waypoints, routes, and tracks. These links will be exported to text and DXF files when a file export is performed.

I wonder if this will work with GSAK (GPSBabel) imported waypoints?
