  1. Take a look at my Quache Quest Qualgary GCYWV3. It might be something like what you are looking for. http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...&Submit6=Go
  2. There were a number of them - now considered locationless or moving caches and no longer accepted. Here's one of them: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...33-d606ea485737
  3. Seems to me here’s a fellow who thoroughly enjoys placing caches. The caches could appeal to a wide spectrum of seekers. He’s merrily going along contributing to the geocaching community, feeling good, and then…. a brick wall. No explanations. No contact. What would your response be? … and then of the first 7 responses, 5 had to make what they thought to be clever comments about geocide – shame on you and the rest of the clever geocide ‘raters’ as well. Does it have something to do with cache saturation? If so, an explanation from the powers that be, at the very least, would have been nice. edited for spelling
  4. I’m in favor of a separate, searchable ‘simple’ puzzle cache icon – one where the final coordinates are determined with some benchwork where no additional visits are needed. Just solve the puzzle and you go and find that puppy. I feel that a lot of puzzle aficionados would welcome it, especially if traveling to unfamiliar or new territory.
  5. Congratulations. ............. and now all you've gotta do is put a cache there
  6. I'm not from that area but the following cachers seem to be active nearby and by nearby I mean 60 to 80km. Who knows, you might get lucky. VictorEcho - south of Swan hills Belfrypotters - south of Swan hills bearff - Slave Lake
  7. geobc, Thanks for the alternate solution. A local cacher has also suggested it. As to the Ram Mount, it also caused some grief until I made a slight modification with the good ol' Dremel. I cut back on the two ridges on the cradle and the GPS pops in and out quite nicely and is still very secure in its mount..
  8. I’ve done a few roadtrips now without my car and used the Garmin bean-bag mount on rental vehicles and wife’s auto. What a pain in the butt it was inserting and removing the 60CSx using the 12v cigar adaptor in conjuction with the cradle/mount. I’m sure if have used one, you know what I’m talking about. It’s awkward. The 12v. wire kept getting in the way of the cradle. (The wrist-strap also kept getting in the way so that the GPS would not seat properly but that was minor). I made a few sweet modifications with a Dremel tool; primarily to accommodate the 12v. power cord –it’s what was causing most of my grief. After the modifications, the unit still ‘clicks’ very securely into the cradle. I’m pretty sure it will not come off with even with severe road bounce. I’m sure you could also cut the other side down and still have the GPS secure in its now slimmer cradle. This will probably work for the windshield mounts as well. I thought I might share this with you. Here's what I've done:
  9. It would be a handy feature, though, (to delete a photo from a log) for cache owners. I’ve had occasions where the photo was a spoiler and it would have been nice to be able to delete it. As it stands now, you have to contact the cacher who submitted the log in order to delete it and hope that they act on it in a timely fashion.
  10. Good folks, it’s been a blast, but it’s time for me to move on to other things. It seems as if most of my leisure pursuits (other than my good old standby – fishing) last about five years and my “passion for cachin’” has waned considerably. I’m not getting out of caching completely but will spend considerably less time doing so. I feel that I would be providing a disservice to you by not devoting as much time to cache maintenance, etc as I feel I should be. To that end, I will be archiving most of my caches. My initial thoughts are to keep the ones around the Glenmore Reservoir. Caches less than one year old will stay until their one year anniversary. For my older caches, I am hoping to have them wrapped up by the end September of 2007. I’m open to any thoughts or ideas how to accomplish this with the least amount of angst for cache seekers. I’m thinking that if I “temporarily disable” the listings for a couple of months, this would flag them for those using pocket queries and also “post a note” for those who may have them on their watch lists. Any other ideas?
  11. Are we hiccupping (sp) again???
  12. Cache Advance, Cache Effect, and Cache Tech have done yeoman service for us in Alberta. I realy appreciate their time and effort.
  13. I tried a set of those lithiums in my 76s and they did last longer than regular alkalines. Was amazed at how long the battery meter showed full strength, but when it decided to die, it died quick and without warning. I remember looking at the battery level about 5 minutes before this and it had just come off the full mark. With alkalines and rehcargeables, i do get the low battery warning and several more minutes of use after that before having to replace them. I use them as well and they do seem to last longer than the regular alkalines. I have been using the Titanium version as well. Also, lithium batteries work better in cold temps than alkaline batteries. BTW, digital cameras tend to eat AA batts like kids and candy. I use the lithiums in my Garmin V, a 4-pack is down to $5.25 on base. Be aware though, that the Energizer lithium E2 (when brand new) may shut your 60CSx down until the voltage drops to below 1.6volts. (unless Garmin has done something to overcome this glittch recently). I do like them for winter caching.
  14. I’ve had the “lost satellite reception” problem since February with the 60CSx interfaced with laptop running nRoute.. The interval of notification seems to vary for me. Last week it seemed to be about every 20 minutes. Prior to that it was about 35 minutes. On other occasions, it seemed to vary randomly. My suspicion also led me to believe it may have had something to do with downloading tracks…. Have learned to live with it but it is aggravating. I haven’t noticed the degredation in signal reception but also haven’t looked. I’ll keep an eye on it next time I’m out.
  15. Caching and fishing, they are the same thing. Right on, CYBret and briansnat! Fishing was my passion. I had a EagleNav Sport to mark hotspots on the lake before I knew of geocaching. On day back in 2002 while discussing fishing in of all places, my dentist’s chair, he mentioned and article he had read about the use of handheld GPS’s and something called “confluencing”. After returning home and doing some “AltaVista-ing” discovered geocaching too. Found my first cache with that Eagle. The rest is history. The parallels between the two leisure activities are wonderful.
  16. Up here in the north country, good quality graphite pencils work the best. I place two short pencils (full pencil cut in half) and a pencil sharpener in my caches. Many of the dollar store pencils have such poor quality graphite in them that they cannot be sharpened properly. More often than not, the mechanical pencils need the skills of a mechanic to fix after a while. Full size pencils tend to poke holes in ziplocks and also create problems when trying to re-stuff a cache container. Pens tend to freeze in the winter. It’s also been my experience that should a cachelog become wet, you can still read the entries that were written in pencil but the ones in ink often bleed to the point of being unreadable.
  17. If Garmin is reading this, when are you going to get "Real-Time Tracking" as found on page 59 of the user's manual of MapSource working with the 60CSx???? I would certainly hope that it would be through the USB connection rather than the serial connection. Neither the Garmin mode nor the NMEA mode is accomplishing this to date.
  18. Unless I'm doing something wrong, MapSource does seem to limit the total number of maps you can place in 'mapset' to 1050 maps. That 'mapset' can include maps from the different mapping programs (I used TopoCanada v2 and City Select NA v7)
  19. Don't do what I did. Instructions in the owner's manual says, "Slide the tray cover back to OPEN, then lift to remove or insert the micoSD card." I "lifted" the tray cover right out of the CSx. THE TRAY COVER JUST HINGES TO AN UPRIGHT POSITION; the microSD basically falls out. Uh oh. I did manage to to get the cover back in place. Phew.
  20. Don't bother with 1GB. There seems to be some limitation as to how many maps can be included in a 'mapset' in MapSource. I purchased a 512MB microSD and I tried including BC, Alberta, and Saskatchewan in one 'mapset' using TopoCanada. It would have included 1729 maps utilizing 463MB of memory. I got an error message indicating that I had 679 too many maps. Doing the math, the magic number seem to be 1050 maps maximum in a 'mapset'. Through some experimentation, I have confirmed that 1050 maps is the maximum.

  22. I, too, puchased the 512MB transflash. It seems as if you can only load 1000 maps into a mapset in MapSource. I was using Topo Canada and wanted to get BC, Alberta, and Saskatchewan on to the card. It worked out to about 1500+ maps and can't recall how much free memory was left over. MapSource came back with a message that there were too many maps in the set. Ended up with 984 maps using 289.6MB of the 512. Seems to be a bit of a waste. Encountered another glitch after loading City Select v2. The computer couldn't read the TopoCanada files (I said TopoCanada was not installed). I had to re-install TopoCanada to get everything back in order again. I've created a mapset that has both TopoCanada maps and City Select maps combined but have not had a chance to see how they download in the CSx yet.

    Parks Canada

In the meantime, what is the “right” thing to do when seeking established caches in National Parks? We seem to be left in limbo. Do we continue with the status quo until official notification is placed? Down the road, should it survive, I can foresee geocaching to be an activity akin to fishing in National Parks - rules, regulations, and licenses - to try to ensure proper stewardship of the land and resources, which after all, is Parks Canada’s mandate. Do some of the fishing regulations tee me off? Yes, at times, but in the long run I feel that they do more good than harm. I’ve learned to live with them. Does the present draft policy on geocaching rankle me, you bet. Hopefully though, through education and working with the parties concerned we can come up with something that will be acceptable by all. Perhaps not ideal, but workable. I close by asking again, what is the “right” thing to be doing on the presently posted caches.
  24. On a cachepedition into Saskatchewan back in 2003 this sunset presented itself after finding Sandcastles GC1566. A great hike and a bonus sunset.
