  1. I've seen that too. Depends on how you built the file. For example, if I use MacCaching then export gpx, it imports as waypoints with no data. No clue why. What I did today that worked was to export as GPX v1.0 from GSAK (under VMware Fusion) to my shared desktop, then copied to \garmin\GPX via the Mac (I can't get my Fusion VM to see the Oregon 200 via usb for some reason so I need to do it the long way). If you don't use GSAK, just unzip the pocket query (double click it in downloads, it'll make a folder in downloads containing the gpx files - one for the query, one for its waypoints) you can just drag+drop the gpx files natively on the mac onto the drives the garmin automounts as. Works very reliably.
  2. Saw the upgrade in the Market and gave it a try. Some thoughts: it's faster like the gui change seems better behaved in low cell reception areas But...... still can't grab/note/drop trackables via the app. Ugh. it would be helpful if your nearest caches had the direction (N/NE/S etc.) next to the distance Only nit I've seen is that way out in the sticks in low cell areas I saw a few times where it wouldn't let me click on the post logs button at all. Going in/out of the nearest cache page seemed to fix it, but I suspect that was just a coincidence. Guessing I was in a very borderline area. That said, seems like a nice improvement so far. And, most important, thanks for letting us provide feedback HERE in regular forums, rather in that incomprehensibly lame and unfriendly (to me, at least) "feedback" site you used to force us to.
  3. Thanks for posting !!!! I'd never even heard of winebottler. Current GSAK works fine for me under it as a standalone app (Snow Leopard on a original/old white MacBook). I created a bunch of databases and it seems to act normally. Haven't installed any add-on macros yet, but from what I've seen so far I don't expect any problems there. One thing I haven't figured out yet is how to update GSAK to beta versions within a bottled app. Most of my downloaded macros need latest/greatest beta patches added to GSAK, so I'm expecting that will be a problem. Eventually Clyde will update the app in its released form and I'll just re-bottle it. Sure 'seems' faster to me than running Win7 under Fusion, but it might be having all the system ram available. Definitely faster in terms of workflow for my normal case where I'm downloading overlapping queries and reducing the data down to the union of all the unique caches and waypoints. Needing to drag an exported GPX file probably won't be too painful. Thanks again !
  4. GSAK runs under Winebottler and man it's snappy fast. Sure seems faster than running under Fusion/Win7 although some features aren't there in terms of usability (no drag+drop of gpx into the app). I haven't quite figured out how to do a beta upgrade of GSAK from therein in order to run the most recent version of some challenge cache macros, but it definitely works for me on an original white MacBook under Snow Leopard.
  5. I have a MacBook running current Snow Leopard and updated my VM environment to Windows-7 under current Fusion. Unfortunately I can't seem to find a way to get the VM to see my Oregon 200 disk or SD card any more. With Fusion 'off', connecting the Oregon to the MacBook mounts automatically both with and without a powered usb hub. With Fusion/Windows7 running, the Oregon never goes into disk mode. It bypasses it eventually and just powers up ala being a powered (not battery) device. I tried to force the usb to mount, but Fusion says all usb devices in use. I've tried reinstalling VMware Tools, including removing/adding back the usb stuff. Once in a while I get a 'connect to mac or windows' popup in which I answered windows, but then it's gone for certain as long as Fusion is up. I'm thinking Fusion's usb subsystem is brain-dead, but their web site and support are legendary awful. Anybody have any ideas ? I'd really hate to have to use my netbook just to get gsak capabilities. (and before folks try to talk me into lesser Mac software, please don't. I'm staying with gsak). Thanks.
  6. Breathtakingly stupid and not even borderline amusing. Not offensive in the least.
  7. If you archived it, it's not a find until you UN-archive it, in my opinion. Now whether you delete their logs etc is up to you. My normal inclination is to be lenient if it seemed benign and they were polite, but I wouldn't think twice about deleting it if they inflicted any attitude on you.
  8. There are several ways to solve it. Actually one (creative Google searching) isn't really "solving it" I suppose but it will get you to the solution quickest. I solved it doing the simple math with pencil and paper, admittedly taking too much time. It's not really that hard. What you have to do is look at the puzzle and relax a little. There is one number with only one possible answer. There is another number with only two possible answers. The hint helps bound the problem so it's less brute force trial and error needed. FWIW, in the past I've solved similar puzzles by writing a little program that automated everything, which for me was more of a fun exercise than going back to 3rd grade math class. But this time I just did it on paper. If it's still fun, keep digging away at it. When it gets frustrating, put it down for a few days.
  9. If you're in DC, you might want to examine the Metro maps vs. the caching maps and see what you can get without driving. The Metro should get you at a minimum DC (a zillion virtuals), VA, and MD. Given wheels, WV is a bit further but there looked like a nice area around Harpers Ferry. Gettysburg is pretty cool if you haven't been there (PA) You could also go north on 95 and get PA/DE/NJ pretty quickly with many just over the state lines. Beware the high tolls on the bridge on 95. Come with cash (not cache, $$$$).
  10. With all due respect to the nice folks from the Warren area, but why would 'that' location be picked over the many possible locations in the rest of the country ? It's pretty far from airports and big cities. Has to be pretty expensive to get to unless you go US Air to Pittsburgh and do a whole lot of driving. How are the yearly sites picked ? Just curious.... (disclaimer - grew up near Valley Forge and I'm an Eagles/Phils fan, so you know how THAT goes vs. western PA :-)
  11. Have to agree with sandbag holders. I found one for $20 with the mount for my Verizon Fascinate and much to my surprise the gooseneck ball fits the Garmin Nuvi and Oregon units we have too. Had zero luck trying to get the Oregon or Nuvi to stick to the dash or windshield. The sandbag worked great with both mounts. I got mine at https://www.arkon.com/shopsite_sc/store/html/index.html (the SM412 fits the Fascinate) and basically got the phone mount thrown in for free, as the price for the sandbag alone was a steal in my opinion.
  12. Robert - thank you so much for an enlightened and reasoned approach to what's ok vs. not. I get so tired of forum participants with no clue claiming that mysterious double-secret rules+regulations are being violated and chiming in regarding whether folks may say something on the forums. Too many rules. Too many people trying to control a 'hobby'. It is so refreshing to have a common sense approach based on facts. Thanks !!!
  13. I'd suggest that unless somebody cooks up a GSAK macro to automate figuring out where the heck we are in the complicated scenario, you're not going to get a whole lot of nibbles. Some. Not many. To even make it possible, you'd need to lat/lon polygons for each city+town. Seems like a lot to set up.
  14. I still haven't found anything better than GSAK. I run Win7 using VMware Fusion on the Macbook.
  15. My experience has been that force closes were symptomatic of a bad upgrade. You might try deleting the app, then reinstalling clean. Worked for me a few updates ago.
  16. Patience would be my first idea. Things sit normally for a while. Second idea would be for to do a search on local caches nearest that one, then see who has found those recently who looks like a very active cacher local to the area. Email them and ask them to stop over to the cache in question and grab your coin and get it moving again. Most people are nice and would do something like that for you.
  17. Upload the track to RunKeeper and it'll give you an estimated calorie burn rate. I know they track Heart Rate data for some devices, not sure if that includes the Garmin ANT devices. I might add that RunKeeperPro is free until the end of the month. I downloaded it for my Verizon Fascinate (Galaxy S) and it works fine. Used it to track a few walks I went on. RunKeeper also shows you the height/speed info you ask as well as your track overlaid on google maps and the like. Pretty cool.
  18. "All" the logs might be a bit tough, but even my Oregon 200 can do paperless and 1000 caches in it. No special software needed to load GPX files to it, although GSAK makes life simpler for certain. FWIW, I'd suggest you buy something a little more modern than the Oregon 200 so you get a good basemap and possibly Chirp support if you go Garmin. Cost isn't that much more. If I had it to do over, I'd have waited for a sale on the 300 probably.
  19. if you spend a few bucks at Cache-advance.com they can make you an outside decal with the same number (or a TB magnet).
  20. Depending on your email software, you could spam filter it based on keywords or the like. You'd still get the mail, but you wouldn't have to see it.
  21. Semi-unrelated, but Cache Advance does a nice job in my opinion. I had some car TB decals and a magnet made to match my previously purchased (too small) TB number. Very inexpensive. Nice quality.
  22. I picked up a Motorola P513 micro usb car charger for $5.82 delivered from Amazon (really) which works fine on my Verizon Fascinate, so I don't worry much about battery life. The Galaxy has pretty good power management capabilities. Even with heavy use I've never come close to running out of battery (if I run without GPS enabled of course). Using it with c:geo or the official Geo app is very nice, especially with integration to Google Nav. The Oregon 200 blows the phone away for caching once you get out of the car of course. Locks better. Holds lock better under trees. No worries about rain or dropping it.

  24. Nope - there are none here. And the slugs are as big as panthers. And all the roads fell into Puget Sound. And the local football and baseball teams are HORRIBLE. At least one of the above is true.
  25. I know you're semi-out $20 but the whole thing just is somehow hilarious to me as a casual reader. Imagine the difficulty of the cache if one eats it, but I suppose that would invalidate the cache as no travelling caches are permitted any more :-)
