  1. I'd suggest the original poster since they're new learn how to search via the maps. There's a cache 'at the top' of Crystal about a quarter mile from the gondola. Just did it this afternoon. Searching via maps (play with the road/terrain/satellite overlays) is really effective. Searching along a route also helps lots.
  2. If you don't get it in time, there's a sale at REI this weekend for $249 new with free shipping.
  3. Cool beans! Is it available in a Slackware tarball, or will I have to convert DEB/RPM files, or compile from source? Rather than expecting folks to do it for you, you 'could' take 30 seconds and look at the link above, which answers your question.
  4. You're beyond tilting at windmills. There is zero business reason for them. It would be nice, but changing what you do as a consumer expecting that miracle seems silly to me. You'd wait forever. Given the open source nature of the Linux browsers, there should be nothing stopping a developer from doing cool stuff, assuming said developer (1) has an itch to scratch (2) the time and inclination to work the issue and (3) the skill set. My assessment is nobody really cares enough in the open source community. Re: the previous comments about GS and MS products, I use Firefox exclusively and I'm not aware of me being stopped from using GS features as a result on WinXP, Win7, Mac, Linux, or Android. [...Linux user since April 1992 so I've used almost all of the major distros since almost Linux day-one...]
  5. What exactly is it going to take for you guys to actually HIDE THE IGNORE LIST ? You have now released SEVEN broken 2.0.x versions, all without this most basic of features. Would you at least make a commitment of 'when' you are going to fix this issue ? The silence is deafening.
  6. Being a Garmin person, I really didn't understand the DeLorme-centric nature of this product, as well as the compute/memory requirements (don't have a fast enough computer regardless) so I'd like to resell my very gently used copy. Purchased for $79.95 and would like to get as close to that as possible plus something agreeable for shipping. I'm in the Seattle area so if you're nearby we could arrange a handoff if that makes is helpful. IM or email me please if you have interest. Thanks.
  7. Good advice. I've got bugs that stay in circulation and I still only hear from them once every three months. Sometimes way longer. I have only had a couple cases where people had a TB and didn't release it. I try to email politely reminding them and they generally send a response along the lines of "oops - we totally forgot to release it" or the like, and they almost always 'do' release the bug relatively quickly thereafter. Sometimes it takes more effort and I offer to reimburse them if they US Mail the bug back to me. Sometimes the finder is a new cacher who either doesn't get out there much, or pretty much disappeared shortly after picking up my TB or coin. I had less luck then. I had one case where somebody was obviously an active cacher who was simply refusing to release the bug in their possession. The way I got that moved was the change the name of the TB to "THIS BUG WAS STOLEN BY xxxxxx" so that it appeared that way on their profile page every time they logged in. Amazing how quickly the bug was released. :-) Yes, I changed the name back promptly afterward.
  8. Do a search for Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan and there are a number not found there too. One in Afghanistan unfound since 7/4/2006 - http://coord.info/GCWZK8 Another in Iraq unfound since 7/3/2005 - http://coord.info/GCJWE5 One in Iran unfound since 2/22/2005 - http://coord.info/GCMXZB
  9. I'm on the far-from-home stretch on the WA County Challenge and have just the eight counties in far eastern WA to do. Home is Federal Way so I feel the need to plan a bit for these due to distance. I've done a little fiddling with custom queries and S+T and it looks like Whitman/Columbia/Garfield/Asotin (plus jumping over to Lewistown ID) can be done in a reasonable loop that seems like a nice drive. Spokane Co is of course easy. Pend Oreille and Stephens don't look too bad from Spokane. Ferry County is my concern. I would like to avoid needing to go all the way up above Grand Coulee for "CJ and Bird's Treasure" (http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=0a5716a9-e453-49e6-8fb3-0a73483c033b#). Is it simpler to do one of the many up near Kettle Falls on the Ferry County side ? Any suggestions ?
  10. With all due respect, you guys are WAY out there in paranoia crazyland. If you need to bug your kids, you have bigger problems than worrying absurdly about their safety in a one in ten million abduction fear. They're far more likely to get hit by a car or fall out of a tree or something.
  11. I have to call 'baloney' on almost all of your comments above. I see no difference between using my phone to bring up the website in a browser and beating the heck out of the geocaching.com website versus and running a different app on the same phone grabbing the same data via the same web interface. Claiming web scraping is somehow harmful is ludicrous. It might be against the TOS, but claiming it's harmful to the site is ludicrous. [...and yes, I tried c:geo and 'still' bought and use the needs-a-lot-of-work official android app anyway...]
  12. From the wiki: sigh - I remember now. I use a mac. Deleting stuff doesn't delete unless you empty the trash. Duh.
  13. It's been so long since I updated my Oregon 200 that I've forgotten the answer. I have basically nothing extra on the unit itself (NW Trails for Washington is under 3MB) but the unit shows as only 1.9MB free. How can I clean up the unit to make enough room to update ? How much free space does an Oregon 200 have normally ?
  14. I have a Nuvi 1390 (if I remember right) and I used it as a caching GPSr for a little while. I very quickly reached the conclusion that it's just not the right tool for out in the woods caching. It works, but it just didn't have the right 'flow' so to speak for caching. I tend to work off the map and NW Trails, or off the compass/distance screens. Nothing really comparable on the car unit. Also seemed to lose lock pretty easily and recover rather slowly. I battled it for a couple weeks then bought a Oregon 200 handheld.
  15. is the next version going to 'ignore' our ignore lists again ? I know it's on the list. Looking for a commitment re: 'when'. Thanks.
  16. The ignore list is still 'not' being ignored. Given you guys cooked up a quick update, I'm very disappointed you didn't work this very obvious (and really basic/annoying) bug.
  17. I have a Oregon-200 and it's a fine unit. Certainly a steal for under $100 if it's in good condition. All you need to do is add the Ibycus maps to it (use the SD card) and you're all set.
  18. I 'do' see that too often on my Verizon Fascinate, but only in bouncy coverage areas. I guess I'd like to know how the app communicates with the server from a geek standpoint (anybody have a sniffer that can figure it out?). In the usual case communicating via web browser via the same weak connection works ok. My only significant complaint with the v2 android app is the known bug where your ignore list is not being ignored. That something so obvious got through makes me worry about their QA to say the least. Also not pleased a patch for that one hasn't been released. I really don't want to wait months for a minor-minor release bugfix. From a feature set perspective, the official app needs to be able to grab/log/drop trackables. I'd like to see the 'find nearbly caches' always sort by distance rather than making me hit multiple buttons to do so. The nearby caches should show which direction they are from you. Other than that, it's reasonably ok at this point. Certainly better than the v1 app.
  19. Agree. To minimize the $$$ suggest you pick up a used GPS from somebody. You should be able to find a paperless real GPS for under $150 used if you look around a little. Check the Garage Sale forums here. For example, a eTrex Legend (not paperless) is $60. If you can go higher, you can get great stuff for $200 these days. Look online at GPS City or REI. Reason I suggest this is water. You can get a GPS rained on without fear. Your iPod Touch will likely get ruined eventually by either rain or dropping it. Handheld GPSRs are very hard to break. Last reason I'd suggest picking up a cheap used one (or borrowing one) is for you to decide on which interface you like. I started with a eTrex yellow ($100) and moved up to a eTrex Legend ($200) which I used for several years. I updated to a Oregon 200 ($250) to go to touchscreen and paperless about 18 months ago. I didn't want to deal with all the buttons and modes etc. on the Delorme model. I found the simplicity of the Garmin to be what I was looking for. So if you get a cheapie used (?) GPS to get started, you're out a minimum amount of money until you know you want to get more serious and look into more serious (ie, expensive) hardware.
  20. Currently I use Streets+Trips 2005 to plan my caching runs. I cook up GSAK queries, export the pertinent data, import into S+T, add items as route waypoints, and have S+T optimize the stops. Works ok I suppose although there are a lot of steps. I'm also interested in generating custom maps (maps of my hides/finds, custom overlays of trails such as NW Trails maps, etc). Is there 'one' software package that can do all that ? It seems that folks eventually buy Delorme Topo for the mapping stuff, but there are so many versions. I've seen folks with 5.0, 8.0 USA, and current seems to be 9.0 North America. Reviews complain about the user interface. S+T has updated too, but reviews are horrid. What I want to do is: overlay custom maps (such as NW Trails) import waypoints from a GSAK export overlay custom images, grids, etc. build routes based on waypoints - and optimize the stops Seems to me that Topo and S+T are each optimized for their main uses. Does either handle the list above ? Assuming no, and assuming I just add Topo, which version should I get ? Topo-8 US is $27 on Amazon. Topo-9 NorthAmerica is $67. Any differences in terms of functionality worth 40 bucks ? I'd "ideally" like to run on a Mac given a choice, but will stick with Win7 if that's what it takes. Lastly my GPS is a Garmin Oregon 200 if that matters. Looking for suggestions and ideally 'why'. Thanks....
  21. Agree. I tried to update mine and it failed, then I updated the version of the GenUploadStats (I think) macro and it all worked fine again.
  22. GSAK is indeed up there with pull-tabs on beer :-) It runs ok under Winebottler if you want to go that way. Runs better under Parallels/Fusion in my opinion. I haven't found anything remotely close in terms of functionality with all the fabulous macros people have cooked up. Money well spent for me at least. The real issue I have is lack of any good Mac mapping/planning packages ala Topo or Streets+Trips, which are forcing me into running Windows virtualized anyway on the MacBook. Other than Quicken, all my Windows apps are for caching at this point.
  23. My local area is plagued by some pretty horrible quality hides by a couple particular cachers. I've added their caches as they pop up into my ignore list, and the website correctly hides them from view. Unfortunately, the official android app 2.01 doesn't appear to be filtering out the ignore list. I can't find any place where I could have set my preferences to display them (is there), so I'm guessing there's a bug in the official droid app. Can anybody else confirm if they have the same problem ? Thanks...
  24. Agree. I find it BEYOND confusing, as well as beyond annoying. It seems to be intentionally confusing. What I'm looking for is 'one' pass that gets me into all state + national lands in the state of Washington (excluding the National Parks which I find somewhat self-evident). What's the price/day or week or year to do that? Reading the non-authoritative web pages, I have zero clue what I need to go where. I don't KNOW (nor care) who manages which particular set of trails or parking areas or trailheads. That shouldn't be the users' problem. Making you register for a non-transferable permit tied to one vehicle is simple greed. In most cases you take 'one' vehicle. You should get to pick whichever vehicle you want to use that day. The whole thing is either simple greed, or pathetically lame, or both.
  25. Doubt the number means too much. Check the release date. One of mine (LINK) is still alive. Released 9/7/2002.
