  1. I had installed Expert GPS back in October and never used it. When I went to use it, a dialog box came up saying the 14 day trail was over. Ok, no problem I'll just uninstall and download it again. First problem, no un-install feature (strange for a eval copy) OK then, go to add/remove programs and uninstall it from there. Its not listed. Ok, delete the files and folders, go into the registry and remove all references to it then download a new copy. Next problem came up after installing the new copy. I ran it and it still tells me that the 14 day trail is over and that I need to register it in order to continue using it. I have emailed TopoGrafix last night for help. but in the mean time, does anyone know any way around this? I would like to start to do these conversions ASAP. BTW I’m not trying to bootleg the software just trying to see if it does the track to route conversion cleanly if so then I’ll buy it. Thanks again for the advice! 2. Could not find the National Geographic Topo CD covering my area on Ebay, and since I have Garmin Topo and DeLorme's Topo 2 and 3. I have a new question: Is National Geographic's Topo that much better that DeLorme's TOPO USA to justified spending the $100 Buckaroos to buy the Map data just to get this feature; or since I'm only wanting to convert Tracks into Routes are there any other Utilities in the Shareware/freeware realm that can do this? 6. jfitzpat, I’m looking to take existing Tracks that I have uploaded into Mapsource and Delorme’s Topo and convert them into routes that I can edited The background on this is over last 3 months Team Banzai has been trail mapping in a local state forest, we now have over 200 miles of trails in the form of tracks. I want to take these tracks convert them into routes so that they can be edited to create trail maps including only the parts of the trail that are rideable. I also want to the same with 50 or so tracks made while doing Road cycling and are somewhat long being in the 50 to 100 mile range. So a quick click and convert is the only way I see of doing this in my lifetime. I have active, and saved tacks for each ride. I have made some great maps from the active tracks. But now I want to edit and splice them together resulting routes GPS and mapping software independent. Thanks for your quick reply! 7. Thanks, but EasyGPS only does the transfer of waypoints and route but not the conversion of a track to a route. BB edited to remove large pic file [This message was edited by Buckaroo Banzai on April 06, 2002 at 04:19 PM.]
  8. I could not find any information in searching of the Forums for software that can convert a track into a route. Are there any waypoint management programs capable of doing the conversion? If there are, how to they handle the waypoint limits and does anyone have first hand experience with this conversion? Thanks in advance. 9. I’ve hunted a few on my Mt. Bike, but found that while it works out ok while getting near the cache, you do have to get off the bike when closing in. At that point it feels like you're Lewis and Clark in the backcountry dragging your bike over whatever nature between you and the cache. I have also left the bike on the ground and off the trail to continue the search. But beware, waypoint the bike unless you want to add finding your bike to your hunt . The first time out with the bike, it took me longer to find the bike that the cache. Strange how the woods look completely different when tracking back!

  11. BassoonPilot, I thought it was minor as well, until I started getting the hate emails (and the names I've been called from my fellow caches, I will not name anyone) Well I stood my ground (forgetting to battle only the important issues, and this is not one of them.) and have seen not all into the sport are sportmen (or sportwomen). I'll make this my last post on this subject matter, and go back to caching and enjoying the sport. Please, no more hate emails! 12. Zuckerruebensirup, quote: you've misinterpreted my words I may have! And you're right I had no ill intent to stir the pot, and I honestly felt that was the message being conveyed. Friends and Colleagues who know me personally know that is not the way I am. I have been taken back on the posting and emails I have received sinceI posted that I don't log online all of my finds. You would think I was OSAMA bin Banzai As you asked, I would recommend wording for the survey as follows: Choices: 1. All finds should be logged online. I believe that Geocaching is a partnership between the hider and finder and without making an online log entree I am not playing in good faith. 2. It's the courteous thing to do but, and I'm courteous. Hey, if you choose not to, thats ok too. 3. That's what the physical logbook is for. I've done my part by writing in the logbook no other notification is needed. 4. If I update the online log for my find, it is my decision. If I don't I'm still a Geocacher and am play in good faith. 5. None of the above. Post your answer below. Your Thoughts? BB

  14. I've had good results with DeLorme's Topo 2 and 3. For ~$100 you can have Topo maps of the whole US. The detail is not great but it works. I also found that I wanted Topo information while riding, so I use Gramin's Mapsource TOPO (~$100)for "heads up display" of the trail. Keeps you from riding into that swamp at trail's end I have been looking at MapTech Terrain Navigator to provide better detail for hard copy, the cost is ~$130 per area of corverage and cannot be downloaded into your GPS. If cost is not a problem I would recommend that you go for MapTech Terrain Navigator and then Garmin for downloading into the GPS12. If cost is a concern and you only one to buy one package then National Geographic TOPO, DeLorme, or Garmin should do the trick. There are also other very good options in the other posts. These do not provide turnkey solutions, but most act more like middleware, providing the interface between your GPS, Computer, and the source of map data your using (user selectable).

  16. You ask for no name calling but the spin in the servey sure does a lot of name calling if your view is diffrent than your's
  17. Then why the Log book in the Cache? quote: This is a geek game, isn't it? Funny, never look at it that way. I Geocache to bring together my love of the Outdoors, Mt. Biking, software development, Cartography, etc... Look it's a game, but why the hostile responses to my posting regarding how I take part in it? I could understand this type of response if I when out of my way to offended some of the posters on this forum or if I was trolling (I am not). If did inadvertently offend then I would like to take this time to apologize. BTW I have been registered as a Cacher for a while and just changed by ID. My reason was that I wanted to take a more active part in it and adopt this nick name. I have not become a member yet. Judging from the replies I've gotten it looks like I may not be welcomed in joining the Geocaching Family. edited to remove large pic file [This message was edited by Buckaroo Banzai on April 06, 2002 at 04:13 PM.]
  18. Clatmandu, Very good point, in this case the online log must be used. I can see that there is no other choice and I'll say it would be truly irresponsible for a Geocacher not leaving an audit trail for a TB! I have not had the chance to find a travel bug yet, the last one near me was found and sent on its way before I could get to it. On a diffrent note I do remember a thread that discussed the lose of travel bugs. Can these MIAs be tracked down by their log enteries? 20. I log the find in the cache's logbook. quote:I realize that there is no ‘requirement’ to log our finds online (with the exception of travel bugs), but in my opinion, unless a person has a valid excuse for not doing so, it’s rather thoughtless and selfish of them not to. And why is it thoughtless and selfish? If a cache owner visits a cache to restock and insures that cache is in good shape (and some do not, BTW in some of these cases I have not gotten responses to my emails letting an owner know that their cache is growing protozoa, or is just a bunch of rusty junk) then those who have found the cache will be known to the owner . quote:Irresponsible Geocachers placing a cache in a National Park or Burying on Public land, now that's an Irresponsible Geocacher. Not writing an online log, now your reaching . Geocaching is a hobby that I have decided not to keep score or to show off my results. The cache owner and myself know that I found a cache. Sorry for the rant, but there is no need to be call people names and look down on others who enjoy playing the game some what different that you do. I take exception with being called an Irresponsible Geocache along with being thoughtless and selfish because I don't enter a find online. Now go out and do some caching! edited to remove large pic file [This message was edited by Buckaroo Banzai on April 06, 2002 at 04:12 PM.]
  21. I've lurked and cached and have not logged all of my finds. Its the zen in me. If a found cache is not logged, it's still a found cache. BB http://www.banzai-institute.com

  24. I have not had any problems with either the Vista or Legend, I own both. I been happy with the job they have done in the Jet Car, my Mt. and Road Bikes, as well as on Hiking adventures with the HHC. Great size and weight, I never leave the Banzai Institute without one of them! I did have an issue with the total memory in the Legend, and upgraded to the Vista for it's 24 mb. Now I always have map I need (Topo, R&R, or MG). Buckaroo....
