I'll take "B" for $50, Alex. No recent Mac that I've seen has a PC-type serial connector. They used to have a round mini-din for MoDem's, but hey that was last century! Everthing's USB these days... well, just not our GPS cables!
  2. quote:Originally posted by Budophylus:DON'T DO IT!...they ripped us up, talking about how illegal it was to be doing this.... They'll go for any angle to sensationalize so that they get ratings... Anyway, be careful. I'm not going to cite threads or post links on this one, but I do feel we need to be cautious and careful not only when caching, but also when talking about caching. We've adopted the term, "Cache like you were never there". Meaning; we move limbs, not break them; step around the plants, not on them; replace the cache careufully and cover our tracks where apparent. This way if a reporter wants to show the bad side... well, there is no bad side. (And we don't cache at night) Just 2¢, but there's more where that came from
  3. For what it's worth, the GC report was pre-empted by the local station's fund drive. So perhaps, less press is good press? Anywho, here's a downloadable archive: GC on NPR 64kps 1.7Mb MP3
  4. quote:Originally posted by Markwell:Example: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?wp=GC33A7 That's so cool. I didn't know you could query via GC number inthe URL. I've been wasting typing and processing time going tot he "Find/Hide" page and searching for a Waypoint. Now I can just edit my URL w/ the GC I've got in my list or on my mapping application. Cool! (I was late to the party-if this has been active for a year or so, just smile and igore me) UPDATE: I just created a script that contains the URL then adds the GC variable so I can click my waypoints on my map and pull the cache page up in explorer. Oh, this is great! Wuhoo!
  5. quote:Originally posted by Stunod:Now please explain yourself...why in the world would you want to delete the cache instead of archiving it? I agree that I want to keep archived caches available for postarity's sake (and my find log, too However, I can also see the need to delete a cache IF it was NEVER approved in the first place. I have a suite of 6 from a zoo that were never approved, (the rules had changed, and I understand. I'm not bitter, really!) And yet they remain on my list of archived caches. There's 2¢, and I got more where that came from!
  6. If any of you are in the Middle Tennessee/ Nashville area, come cache w/ us!
  7. Yes, it is sick... and to illustrate that point with a nice graph, I'll shamelessly point to my local club's stats page which includes BruceS, JoGPS, Southpaw, and RobertLipe--all of which have 1000+ finds. mtgc.org/stats Dan Miller's Stats pages are more detailed, but I haven't gotten the Leader Board to load lately.
  8. quote:Originally posted by Marky:I use Safari... I'm the OTHER OSX/Safari user out here and I'm suprised how well it handles the layers and popups. The speed seems the same as OSX/IE6, but Safari *seems* much more stable. (I'm running Beta v62 w/ tabs) 2¢ Don't ask me. I'm not from around here...
  9. A number of 'Silver Bullet' micros have been placed by our local JoGPS. He uses these brass match tubes--they're durable, but rather expensive.($3 ea) I've ordered some of these cheaper, plastic versions--stay painted better, too. Don't ask me. 10. Uhm, I just wanted to see my updated sig... Hmmm, no change... curious.
  11. After careful deliberation (amongst myself?) I have chosen the following: 1)Team 5-oh!- Bumbles always bring smiles 2) CYBret- nice defamation of art 3) BrianSnat (old image!)- if it weren't for the tag, it would be cruel. But the tag makes it great! 4) Markwell- Innocence Abroad. Honorable Mention goes to Warm Fuzzies. For far too long I've looked at this character and seen a cartoon woman w/ elbow-high gloves and strapless evening dress... no serioulsy. Only after therapy did I realize those are FEET!! Sorry Fuzzy! Don't ask me. I'm not from around here...
  12. quote:Originally posted by Glisson:I signed up last night as a paying member here at Geocaching.com and I now have access to pocket Querries. Welcome to the club. Just going to mention GPSbabel is a great Import/Export tool for moving .loc files to MapSource or .xml to .gpx or whatever. gpsbabel.sourceforge.net Originally command line-only, the GUI makes it an everyday tool for me. Give it a try. Don't ask me. I'm not from around here...

  14. We don't night cache on purpose; but when traveling last summer, we stopped at dusk and searched along a greenway until dark. After a quick trip to Target for a Maglite and batteries, we returned to search and find the cache. It really made the cache-experience much more scary and so much more fun! [link=http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cachelog_details.asp?ID=78808&L=481564]Shhh, I hear something...[/link] Don't ask me. I'm not from around here...
  15. I'm in the same boat--I export GPX-to-HTML and copy to my (wife's) Dell Axim. It's fast, it's color, and it reads so much better than my Palm! BUT, ther is no "Find" feature... I am searching for a free/cheap browser. If I find one, I'll post the link. Good luck. Don't ask me. I'm not from around here...
  16. Satellite: New Location: Use Map: (point to your local region): 'Click-Stick' select and wait. Of course by now, it's found itself, both WAAS sats and the last transmission of Pioneer 10 My Legend just came back from a trip to Olathe, KS and it took a good 25minutes to find itself, but it did! Don't ask me. I'm not from around here...
  17. quote:Originally posted by Faderaven:got a Pocket PC. An Axim. Crud. As great as Plucker is, I found that you don't need Plucker on the Pocket PC--I use Pocket Internet Explorer. It works pretty well, and dang fast too. The big catch so far (there's always a catch) is PocketIE doesn't have a 'Find' function, so you can't search your list for specific waypoints or names. Dang! Don't ask me. I'm not from around here...
  18. No experience w/ the Geko, yet. But after a few hours playing w/ a Meridian and an eTrex, I chose the eTrex (twice, actually). I have a Legend and a Venture. They were easier to read and their menus made sense to me. Either way you go (It's a zesty battle not unlike Mac vs PC) I would suggest if you can, taste-testing both before choosing. Good luck! 19. quote:Originally posted by JetSkier:Thank you to everyone who participated in this discussion. I have redone the cache and made it a micro. http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?ID=55568 is the new one. I hope everyone enjoys it! JetSkier Oh, I like that idea very much. Often compromises fall short on both sides, but this is a facinating idea. Reminds me of a local webcam cache where you not only get your 'picture took', but also must find a physical cache w/ the URL for the camera image. ... and you don't have to worry about log books, either. Nicely done! Don't ask me. I'm not from around here...
  20. quote:Originally posted by Prime Suspect:Unless there's been a release I'm not aware of, Roads & Rec hasn't been updated in several years. Just got a Legend and happily d/l'd R&R at work, then drove home watching my progress on the map. (Cool!) But, when I went to turn into my neighborhood... it wasn't there! (Luckily, I knew where I lived.) How often do these maps get updated? Don't ask me. I'm not from around here...

(North of the white buildings, facing West) terraserver small pic Gee, I wonder how may decomissioned Blackbirds are out there? (I know of one more at Robbins AFB in GA, but it's in a hangar ) Don't ask me. I'm not from around here...
  22. I tried a similar setup w/ my Bronze G3 and VPC 3.0. I have an eTrex Venture w/ the PC-serial cable and a Serial-to-USB adaptor. Once booted up and connected, I could not get Windows 95 or Win2K to recognize the USB port as COM1 or COM2 (kept recognizing the Modem and the IrPorts only). So I upgraded to VPC v5 for OSX (It's quite fast compared to v3) and it recognizes my USB ports, but not the serial cable via adaptor. It appears that I still need to find and install the Windows driver for my Serial-to-USB adaptor. I thought it was a pass-through cable, but that does not appear to be the case. I plan to work more this weekend on setting this up. I'll let you know of my success. Don't ask me. I'm not from around here...
  23. quote:modern radio receivers generate internal signals at what is known as an "internal frequency." Those signals are mixed with the preamplified signal from the antenna, creating "beat" signals at the sum and the difference of the two frequencies. The difference signal is then processed further and the sum signal is usually filtered out. What that means is that there are somewhere within the receiver, at minimum, relatively high-energy signals at the intermediate frequency, the received frequency, the sum frequency, and the difference frequency, any of which might interfere with the avionics in some unpredictable way. So that's why I get a head ache when I listen to the radio! I thought I was just getting 'old'. (Maybe that's why the Co-pilot didn't wave the GPSr around for all to see, and he asked me to stow it when he left) Don't ask me. I'm not from around here...
  24. I recently returned from a trip where I was both able to use my GPSr and banned from it. I flew American and found that most flight attendants don't know what they are and the few that do associate them w/ Sept. 11 (it's reported that the hijacking pilots used hand-held GPSr's to find the Towers) Anyway, when the attendant asked me to switch it off, she said, "Those send out signals to satellites!". To which I replied, "Close, but not accurate. The receive signals only. They don't transmit. They're like an FM radio." She was wary and asked to take it to the cockpit and show the flight crew. A few minutes later she and the co-pilot returned. He (the co-pilot) was happy to let me use it and we ended up talking Geocaching for about 15 minutes. It was so cool to fire it up and see this: GPS in Flight (I did the quick math to determine we were going 0.8 Mach!) Don't ask me. I'm not from around here...

But here's a word of caution; today I tried the dollar.com link w/ the supplied code and got an $80 rate. Then for grins I ran the same rental w/o the code and got a $71 rate!? Try both ways before you commit--I just saved $9 for the slots!! (or gas ) Don't ask me. I'm not from around here...
