  1. I have been using the Oregon 550T for a long time. The camera is a nice feature but not necessary. Once in a while I need it for an earth cache, virtual or a benchmark. I have used it to photo some interesting objects in the desert including several Desert Tortoises and some incredible Saguaro Cactus.

But yesterday I also went to Cabelas's and purchased the 450T for $299.99 to use for topo and for my wife when she goes geocaching with me. I had planned on buying just the 450 but they wanted $345 for that model. Today we found 32 caches using both units. It's more fun when we both have GPS's in our hand.

I've just ordered a 450 from the US on special @ $198. I will collect it on my next visit to the UK in August - can't wait....in the mean time I will use my Dakota 20 to guide me to you meet and greet in the Victoria falls on the 20th June!

  2. Greenmealie, I see that you have a couple of unfound caches there as well.

Maybe some guys will make a trip for those.

We look forward to you coming to Zimbabwe, please make contact. local knowledge and street wise wisdom can make a huge difference to a caching holiday success!

  3. If you want to encounter these magnificent animals put this cache on your bucket list. http://coord.info/GC35CAC

The Zambezi River has an abundant population of Hippos. The earlier comment that they "hate boats and will tip them" is not something that they do if you take care, respect their territory and never get between the hippo and the deep water. Canoeing and boating on the Zambezi is common and respect for the hippo is always given.

A few more hippo engaging caches are http://coord.info/GC35C5H, http://coord.info/GC3A4ZV and my favorite http://coord.info/GC35EZ8

  6. Some great caches in the Umfurudzi / Hippo Pools area in Zimbabwe have been laid recently. Anyone out there who is keen on a few FTF's. The 4x4 Club has a trip planned on the 18th April 2013 and I suspect that the geocachers amongst them will be zeroed in on a few good finds!

  9. Green Mealie also helped us out when we were in Zim in January, he's very passionate about geocaching, despite the lack of caches in Zim to find. I think he owns more than half the Zim listings, so not much for him to search for!

If you head through Harare give him a shout, I'm sure he will help out with a few of the out of the way caches.

He also volunteered to help with some maintenance on some caches we placed there, so if you are want to leave a physical container in a foreign land, this is the way to go about it.

  12. It's easy,

go onto geocaching.com - login with your user name

    go to hide and seek

find a cache you want to download to your gps

plug your gps into the computer using the usb cable - your gps should be off

the gps will start up showing "garmin" on the screen

On the page with the cache on there is a box that says " send to my gps"

    Click this icon

The computer will search for your gps

It will find the Dakota 20

Follow the instructions and the cache will go to your gps

    unplug the gps

Switch the gps on and go to geocache icon on the gps

You are now ready to get out there and find your cache. Remember it is paperless and all the cache detail is on your gps.

I think you need to be a premium member to get all the cache detail on the gps

    Hope this helps

The Dakota 20 rocks - enjoy!

  13. Create a pocket querry of the caches you want to go search for.

Connect your gps to your computer, when the folders for it show up drop the gpx file (this is the one created by the pocket querry) into the file named GPX on your gps folders.

And presto you should be ready to go.

Unhook the gps from the computer, power it on and make sure they are all there. I'm not sure of the maximum number of geocaches the Dakota will hold, so make sure not to exceed it.

    Hope this helps!
