  1. I have been using an external antenna(Garmin GA 27C Low profile) with a Map76 to boost signal strength under the forest canopy. No lost signals and improved accuracy-good results. The GPS can be put inside your pocket. There is less battery life. The antenna has a magnetic base that allows attachment to the roof of a vehicle for GPS use while driving.
  2. I've been using Maptech Terrain Navigator for the past year. The maps are 1;24,000 topo seemless that will allow you to up/dn load waypionts, tracks and routes. Maps may be printed in large scale with GPS data displayed. There are many features that allow data management: search, file, determine distance and area, multiple screens, and view in 3-D. I also use CDMCOX.com software for aerial photo maps that will display GPS data.
  3. Topo maps are oriented toward True north. The setting on my GPS is set to True for direction. My magnetic compass is adjusted to compensate for magnetic declination to give True direction using an offset on the numeric scale. All azmuths used are True. No need to convert form true(map) to magnetic for magnetic compass or mag to true to use compass direction on map. I use my magnetic compass often in many different applications. You must calculate current magnetic declination using data given on the map that is being used. Of course one must be alert to any conditions that may infulence the accuracy magnetic compass.
  4. Change setting to METRIC. Then convert meters to feet. (1 meter =1.1yd = 3.3 feet). Find 10% of # meters,and add the 10% to meters, total = yards, then 3x= feet. For example, convert 40 meters to feet... 40m + 4(10% of 40m)=44yd x 3ft = 132ft 1m = 1.1yd = 3.3ft (close enough for Horseshoes and Handgrenades)
  5. Try using metric setting on the GPS. Then convert: 1 meter= 3.3 feet, convert 1 meter= 1.1 yards, convert metric to english then add 10%.
  6. Try using metric setting on the GPS. Then convert: 1 meter= 3.3 feet, convert 1 meter= 1.1 yards, convert metric to english then add 10%.
