  1. Terrain Navigator software is a good investment. If you plan to spend many days outdoors, Maptech will enable you to navigate with confidence. The tools will print detailed Topo maps to your custom specifications and help manage Waypoints,Tracks, and Routes. Paper 7.5min USGS TOPO maps can cost $5.00 each.

  3. The Garmin MAP76S and Map76 will use MapSource America's BlueChart that provides detailed electronic charts for predefined regions in the US. The 76 provides Tide tables, Sun and Moon data, and navigation aids. I'm using BlueChart with a 76S. The coastal and offshore navigation functions are a pleasure to use. The GPS V is designed for different user functions.

  5. Garmin 76 GPS with GA 27C Low Profile antenna: WAAS technology with amplified satellite signals. I've used this combination for over a year. The 76 has many nav functions. Try WWW.TVNAV.COM for actual price.
  6. May I suggest a better method of cutting your way through dense vegetetion ? Try using tree pruning loppers. In tight spots there is often not enough room to swing that machete. Lopper shears will do the job. Check out WWW.floriantools.com for quality cutting tools. The rachet-cut loppers are my choice. Hedge shears work well on thick Briars.
  7. I'm using a Garmin GA 27C Low Profile Antenna with a Garmin Map76S GPS. The antenna amplifies the satellite signal that results in improved accuracy and performance of the GPS. I seldom experience problems with dense vegetation causing lost signal reception. I pin the antenna to the back of my collar with the wire under my jacket. The antenna will not become tangled when I'm doing serious bushwacking. The GPS can be carried in a pocket when the antenna is in use.
  8. There is distance "OFF COURSE" in the Map76S. Select MENU in the a Map, Compass or Highway Page, Setuup Page Layout(number of rows), then CHANGE DATA FIELDS, Press Enter Twice, then select "OFF COURSE". I used this in my Compass Page layout while navigating on Tracks last Sunday. The E- compass must be held in a horizontal position to work properly. The unit held vertically for best signal reception. I've used the 76S with Blue Chart and Mapsource Topo... works great! Activate the Heading line from Map page, Setup map, tab to-Other, Heading line--ON. It will take some practice to utilize the full capability. 10. Check the setting on the "speed filter". Go to Main Menu... then... Setup...units...at the bottom...Speed Filter... try..."Auto" setting to speed corrections. This is the option on the Map76S.(GPS111 ?) The MAP 76S is two seconds to correct position and direction. Without changing position and the Electronic Compass on, any change horizontal direction of the GPS, will record as a heading change.
  11. I'm using a Garmin GA 27C Low Profile GPS Antenna. When the antenna is attached to the back of my collar, the GPS can be carried inside a pocket. The signal is amplified by the antenna providing improved accuracy and performance under a dense forest canopy. HINT: TRY AN ANTENNA

  13. I use a GA 27C Low profile GPS antenna with a Garmin 76. The antenna is pinned to the back of my collar facing the sky. I can report the signal strength is improved over-all and the signal is seldom lost even under a dense forest canopy. The recorded tracks are rarely broken.Under conditions that affect signal reception; the external antenna will improve accuracy by amplifing signals of minimal strength. When using the GPS on a boat where the sky and horizon is unobstructed, I don't think the external antenna is of much advantage. 14. I use a GA 27C Low Profile GPS Antenna on a Garmin 76 to improve signal strength in dense vegetation. The antenna amplifies the signal significantly - stronger signals that are seldom lost. I pin the antenna to the rear of my coat collar facing the sky. The antenna and wire doesn't get tangled in the brush and the GPS can be placed inside a pocket. The antenna does decrease battery life. Possibly an external antenna could help improve signal strength in your area.
  15. was a Birthday gift. I tried the Garmin 12CX when SA was active and thought the GPS was some kind of "toy". I had been using Furuno LC90 LORAN C for years, onboard commertial fishing vessels, which is very accurate. I gave the GPS another test after the SA was discontinued and found the GPS accurate enough for practical use. Later started using Maptech software with the handheld GPS for hunting, hiking, and for backup navigation on boats. Geocaching a new outdoor interest.
  16. I believe that if a scientific study were done to determine the frequency of fire support accidents; it would find the rate is lower today than any time in history. Also the collateral damage has been kept to a minimum increasing risk to our military personnel. Our soldiers are dedicated professionls that have taken courage and skill to a new level. Never before has such a small force had such affect, with such speed, on our enemies.
  17. I set my GPS to True and set the declination correction (W+,E-) to True on my magnetic compass so that the compass is indicating True direction that corresponds to the map( USGS 7.5 Min Quad). My GPS,compass, and map all set to True direction. No more conversion to be done from compass to map or vice versa. The topo maps will provide Mag declination and the yearly correction to use. Grid North(GN) may differ from True North and is another correction may be necessary depending on user needs. Is anyone using MILS instead of degrees? (6400 Mils=360 Degrees) I use my compass often in many applications in combination with the GPS when land navigating.
  18. Enter units in GPS then change setting to convert.

  20. The USGS Topographic maps and Maptech software that I am using is NAD-27 map datum. I set my GPS and map software to NAD-27 when I use those maps. When using WGS-84 coordinates on a NAD-27 maps, there will be a constant position error. I set my GPS and map software to WGS-84 when entering WGS-84 coordinates. The GPS and map software will convert WGS-84 coordinates to NAD-27 when the GPS and map software settings are changed to NAD-27. Using this procedure WGS-84 coordinates can be accurately displayed on NAD-27 maps. (I think)
  21. If the Foreward Observer is located near the the target when he is requesting artillery fire support, "danger close" is a waring to the Fire Direction Center the observer is close to the target. Then FDC will report "Angle T" to the observer Do you remember "Angle T"? Did you serve as a Foreward Observer? Army,or Marines? If so, I'm sure you are an expert in Land Navigation.

  23. Location: Somers Point on the coast near Longport and Ocean City in southern NJ. I have been fortunate to find a few caches by tneigel through this area and in the Pine Barrens. I'm sure the Geocachers nearby would enjoy the quiet isolation and challenging quest for tneigel caches hidden among the "pines".
  24. I have been using an external antenna(Garmin GA 27C Low profile) with a Map76 to boost signal strength under the forest canopy. No lost signals and improved accuracy-good results. The GPS can be put inside your pocket. There is less battery life. The antenna has a magnetic base that allows attachment to the roof of a vehicle for GPS use while driving.
