  1. Terrain Navigator(TN) by Maptech, 1:24,000 or 1:100,000 Topos. TN has many tools and will interface with GPS units. Find TN at Maptech.com
  2. I'm using a Garmin Map76S with a GA 27C external antenna. Slip a piece of cloth under the magnetic base of the antenna, tighten screws. Pin the antenna to the back of coat collar and run the wire under the coat to GPS. Accuracy is improved and the GPS can be placed in a pocket.
  3. The MAP76S does double duty for me. I use it for near shore navigation and inland(BlueChart and Topo). The tide tables, and sun & moon data are very useful. The compass is used when stationary or moving slowly. The external antenna(27C)is an avantage on the road or under a dense forest canopy. When the antenna is in use the GPS can be carried in a pocket. The 76S has many navigation data display options. Try TVNAV.COM for a good price.
  4. Tom,This comment is not worthy of a reply. Keep up the good work. You have done a great service for promoting Geocaching here in NJ. Thanks again.
  5. Here's a good source for outdoor/geocaching gear. Try WWW.ACTIONGEAR.COM .
  6. Go "all-out"! Get a pack from WWW.Blackhawkindustries.com Buy good quality the first time. This is top quality gear designed for military use. This is not used surplus junk. These packs are the latest design and made of the best materials. I use two Blackhawk packs.
  7. Magnetic declination is the angular difference between the Magnetic North Pole and the True North Pole. To convert Magnetic direction to True direction ADD West declination to the magnetic compass heading, for East declination subtract declination from the magnetic compass heading. Do the opposite to convert True direction to Magnetic direction. Deviation is error within the compass that can be measured and a correction can be applied. Many types of hand-held compasses have a built in correction scale permitting the compass direction to give TRUE direction instead of MAGNETIC direction for convenience in using maps or charts that are True North-up. As a rule use True direction on maps and charts.
  8. I have a piece of cloth on the base of an antenna that I pin to the back of my collar. The antenna wire passes under my coat to the 76S in my pocket. The antenna wire cannot become tangled in the brush. The antenna amplifies signal strength producing increased accuracy under a dense forest canopy. Detach antenna from the coat collar and mount it to your car top using the magnetic base.
  9. If you see fresh deer roadkill, post the coordinates quickly. "Kill'em and grill'em the're delicious. This is the start of a new GPS game where the cache is fresh venison.
  10. I'm using a Garmin Map76S GPS that I've loaded with Garmin MapSource Topo(topo maps) and BlueChart(nautical charts)that are available from Garmin for Garmin GPS units. No external memory chip required.
  11. No problem with the compass in my Garmin 76S. Even a magnetic compass must be held horizontal to the ground! No need to recalibrate on battery change.
  12. Thanks for all the fun seeking your caches! I enjoyed the guided tour of the Pinelands.
  13. I've navigated using BlueChart through intracoastal and offshore waters. No complaints-it's an excellent handheld GPS. The charts are detailed and accurate. Aids to navigation represented and information is provided. It can be used as a primary or back-up unit. I don't get underway without it!

  15. I've been using the "76S" for the past five months with MapSource Topo and BlueChart. I also use Maptech Terrain Navigator and Chart Navigator on my PC interfaced with the Map76S. When on the road or under a dense forest canopy an external antenna is attached. The EPE is usually less than 20 feet without signal loss. The unit fits perfectly in my pocket. I can operate the "76S" held in either hand. This GPS will support most any navigation need with an array of user options. I have no need for highway directions. I've navigated through the forest, intracoastal and offshore waters day and night without a problem. Garmin has provided timely product support when requested.

  21. I'm using a 76S with BlueChart. No complaints. Works fine. The chart display is easy to read and use.The BlueChart Map page is detailed showing Navigation aids, depth, and Data fields. Other navigation pages display Compass heading and Highway. The 76S has Tide tables and Sun and Moon data. I don't get underway without the 76S!
  22. Inorder to have multiple maps in the 76S download different MapSource maps at the same time. If you download separately one map will erace the other. I'm currently using BlueChart and United States Topo in the Garmin 76S that were downloaded together. The maps cannot be used concurrently. The user must select the map to display.
