  1. Thanks! I'm sure I have done that in the past, but I could not remember how to do it. I have been racking my brain trying to remember. Now I can sleep at night..... Thanks again!
  2. Thanks, but that will not work. The pointer will always point to the destination, but how I get there is not fixed. I could wander 2 km to the left, but the GPS simply points to my destination. The whole point is to stay on a set course, so I know I am on track and we know what areas have been searched. There is often search teams on either side of me and if we wander off course, areas are missed. While its possible to build a course, it is time consuming. I was hoping for a quicker, easier way.
  3. I am a member of the local Ground Search and Rescue group, and I am often assigned a task that involves searching along a specified heading for some time/distance. It is very difficult to stay on course when traveling on a side slope shooting with a compass. I can make a route with the 60csx, but it is a bit tedious having to set 2 different waypoints and build a route to follow. The 60csx manual states that you can "sight n' go" by aiming the GPS and following the "course" set. But the actual course line moves around with you. This may keep you on your heading, but not on course. Is there a way of quickly aiming and shooting a course that is fixed without having to set two waypoints and navigating between them? Thanks for your help.
  4. I am heading to Hawaii in a couple weeks and I was wondering if the TOPO maps for the US are road routable? I have Topo Canada, and it seems to route, but I also have metroguide loaded and it might be reading that data as well. Also, if I buy the Metroguide US data, it has a note that Hawaii is unconfirmed data. Does that make it reliable? Has anyone used it? In short, I would rather have the US Topo, but I need it to be routable. Thanks!
  5. PROPER TICK REMOVAL - Many industrial and wilderness first aid organizations (I am a First Aid Instructor for OFA, OEC, Red Cross) recommend using a short piece of straw with a piece of thread tied around the straw with a overhand knot (as if you were starting to tie your shoes). Slide the straw under the ticks body so that it is pushing against the ticks mouth (with the tick inside the straw). Slide the thread down the straw until it comes off at the bottom. Slowly tighten the thread using the straw to guide it around the front of the ticks head. Tighten the knot gently and pull up on the thread hard enough to cause the skin to lift slightly. Maintain this pressure until the tick lets go. If the tick has not let go in about one minute - increase the pull and wait another minute. This is the only method that will not cause a tick to possible vomit into your underlying tissue. Happy Tick Hunting! I want to die like my grandfather did, peacefully in his sleep. Not screaming and yelling like the passengers in his car.
  6. GPSR's, laptop computer, navigational software, 3 people and a geocache that was either improperly entered into the geocache website or they copied the info incorrectly resulted in these three people getting completely lost in Strathcona Park last weekend. Campbell River Search and Rescue was called out to look for them at 11:30 Sunday night (June 15/03). They were located about noon Monday by a search team that was looking along a ridge at 1700m elevation. Cold, wet, tired, and very blistered feet all three were helicoptered off the mountain. Anyone know what cache they were looking for? Here is the news article: Lost Geocachers I want to die like my grandfather did, peacefully in his sleep. Trading Fair

Why do some people think that it's fair to trade McDonalds happy meal toys for t-shirts, hats, geocoins and other cool stuff. I was just at a multi-cache that had all this really cool stuff in it just 7 visits ago. Now it's an ad for McDonalds. Why can't people just not trade or try to leave the cache better than before? If we all try to make a cache better, think of how great the caches could become! I'm so dissapointed in some people right now... I want to die like my grandfather did, peacefully in his sleep. 8. Every year I hear people talk about the best way to remove a tick. I am sure these people are trying to be very helpfull, but there is much "false information" that gets passed around and perpetuates the problem. So this year I am being proactive and posting the "preferred" method of removing a tick. This method prevents the tick from vomiting its stomach contents into your blood stream before you can remove it. For obvious reasons, if the tick had a disease, vomiting would be bad. Tools Needed: a drinking straw a 12" piece of good thread 1. Gently slide the straw under the tick until it comes to a stop against the ticks head and with the ticks body inside the straw. 2. Tie an overhand knot around the straw with the thread. (An overhand knot is how most people start tying their shoe laces - right over left) 3. Slowly slide the thread down the straw until it comes off at the bottom - next to the ticks head. 4. Tighten the knot keeping the straw in place to force the thread in front of the ticks head. Only move to the next step if the thread is between the skin and the ticks head. 5. Apply steady pressure to the thread pulling at a right angle to the skin. Do not yank or tug on the thread! 6. The skin should be lifted by the steady pull of the thread on the tick. If the skin is still level, apply more pressure. 7. Most ticks will release in less than 30 seconds, but some of the tougher ticks can hold on for up to 5 minutes. 8. When the tick releases, you can place it in a film canister and take it to your health unit for testing if you are concerned. Match sticks, vaseline, tweezers, etc. can all cause the tick to vomit before removal. Place a short piece of straw and a piece of thread in your first aid kit and have fun! 9. I have used the straw and thread method quite succesfully in the past. Just be aware that in can take up to 3-5 minutes for the tick to release. Just keep pulling with steady pressure (until the skin is also pulled up) and the tick will eventually lose its grip. Most times the tick will release in about 20-30 seconds. Depending on how long the tick is in place, you may have a significant red area form where the tick was embedded, just be sure that it does not get larger over the following couple days. 10. I figured it would be handy to have the co-ordinates for places of interest on Vancouver Island so you would know how far away you were and/or help find the right location. To date I have not recieved a single waypoint to add to my website. I guess this idea is a bust. On to the next idea..... I want to die like my grandfather did, peacefully in his sleep. 11. Try gpscentral.ca - they are in Calgary and have good prices. I want to die like my grandfather did, peacefully in his sleep. Not screaming and yelling like the passengers in his car.
  12. I am not very impressed with the accuracy of the map that came installed on my Garmin Legend. The few marine markers that it shows on the water can be way out of place (check out the white Nav Aid at Horseshoe bay - wrong side of the bay). They also have roads in my area listed as towns. Lakes around here have the wrong name or they are misspelled. The highway to Courtenay has been in place for 5 years & the highway to Campbell River has been in place for almost 2. These are still not on the update. This is one small 100sqkm area with a terrible number of mistakes. Are the topos going to be any better? I want to die like my grandfather did, peacefully in his sleep. Not screaming and yelling like the passengers in his car.
  13. I am trying to create a website that will list waypoints of interest on Vancouver Island. For example, I have listed the Mt. Cain ski area co-ordinates for the highway exit, parking area, and top T-Bar lift. I also have a few of the BC Ferry slips listed. What I am looking for is some help. Do you have waypoints or co-ordinates for interesting or usefull places on Vancouver Island? Please send them to me and I will post them on my website. (I'm new at webpages so dont expect anything fancy). If anyone is travelling they can look and see if the place there headed to is listed on my website and use the info to know exactly where they are headed! Anyway - Have a look and email me if you want to contribute! (I will post your name next to your contribution) PLEASE SEND IN UTM FORMAT - THANKS SkydiverBC's Geocaching Homepage I want to die like my grandfather did, peacefully in his sleep. 14. We would need to have a BIG, BIG, BIG, Bonfire! Are we talking the ocean or the Puntledge? I have polar bear swimmed before and it can be tough to warm up again. Perhaps new years day would be better(warmer)? Isn't there a swim at the spit on new years? Then we could all find a pub (are they open new years?) and meet one another. 15. On the Navigation page of my Legend, at the top right of the compass are the numbers "5.00 km". I assume this is a guide for how far off course you become from your established track. My question is.... Is it possible to change this to a lower number? Also.... Here is a repeating problem and I don't know why its happening, it's hard to explain but I will try. When I leave Campbell River and drive to Mt. Washington on Vancouver Island I have selected "GOTO" a waypoint on the mountain. I get an accurate arrow pointing on the navigation page with a course pointer arrow. Now, in order to get to the mountain, I must drive 20 km to the left side of the mountain as well as 4 km past it before turning right onto the Mountain road and heading straight for the summit. (for simplicity, imagine my route as the two short sides of a tiangle and the original track the long side of the triangle) As I continue my drive up toward the summit, the course pointer continues to point in the direction of the original track, way off to the left of my destination. The basic pointer does point at my target correctly. Why does this difference occur? I want to die like my grandfather did, peacefully in his sleep. 16. I was very impressed by the view of the Sayward Lakes Chain. Birds I View I want to die like my grandfather did, peacefully in his sleep. Not screaming and yelling like the passengers in his car.
  17. Can someone please confirm that Vancouver Islands quiltcache was recieved? I mailed them long ago and have seen nothing with regards to there arrival. Just want to make sure that all is well with Canada Post... I want to die like my grandfather did, peacefully in his sleep. Not screaming and yelling like the passengers in his car.

  19. I propose we have the event at Newcastle Island as was the original plan. I dont believe i will camp over (still to early to be certain) but will try to make a day trip out of it to meet a few people. Lets plan the next get together much earlier and perhaps somewhere where people can spend a few days in the wilderness. I want to die like my grandfather did, peacefully in his sleep. 20. First, is Sept 1st a long weekend? (if not why not Sat night?)(if it is, than forget I asked) Second, There is presently a fire ban on the island, will this effect the ability to cook?(walk on ferry restricts alot of camping equipment) Third, (I'm not trying to be a downer, I REALLY want something like this to happen) but i have been to newcastle island, and am thinking that getting people out into what Vancouver Island really has to offer might be better? I know its handy for you, but a few people have suggested bringing a trailer to camp in, I use a tent, but after you include thermarests, pillows, sleeeping bag, tarps, cook-stove, food, cooler etc.... its gets to be a quite a haul for a walk on ferry. I'm willing to go anywhere (on VI) for a geocaching weekend, and I would happily spend 3 or 4 days camping and exploring, but it would be very nice to use a car so that I may bring some camping equipment and sleep in reasonable comfort. Once again I stress... I AM NOT TRYING TO BE NEGATIVE, I am only trying to discuss what might be best for the geocaching community as a whole, we want as many people as possible to attend. What about Buttle lake in Strathcona Park? Rock-climbing at Crest Creek, Hiking to Myra Falls, canoeing, swimming, suntanning, and if we put two groups on each site, it wont cost much. This is the type of place I think would bring people together for a whole weekend. If not for the weekend you have planned, then I think we should set it up for next year. Suggestions, Comments, Please let me know. geocaching@telus.net I want to die like my grandfather did, peacefully in his sleep. Not screaming and yelling like the passengers in his car.

  24. Deep Woods Off for Sportsman - 28.5% deet. I was working in the Northwest Territories were the mosquitoes are close to the size of a quarter. Men working on the CANOL Pipepline (americans) in 1940 something were actually going crazy from the bugs. Well Deep woods off for Sportsmen worked for me very, very well. People I was hiking withg were using Skin-So-Soft and other creams with deet but none of them worked as well as my spray. Also, the Canadian military did some experiments with Deet and bugs and determined that approx. 35% deet was the maximum effectiveness point. This means the "BOB's 100% DEET" is no better than a product with 35% deet. Deep woods off for Sportsmen is 28.5% and works great. I want to die like my grandfather did, peacefully in his sleep.
