  1. I've used Google Earth for this and also this website http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/map_input
  2. I agree with the above statement, but caching takes me so many neat places that having a camera with most of the time makes it more enjoyable for me (and I think cache owners and fellow cachers) I totally recommend the Canon Powershot cameras, the Image Stabilization really improved quality of all my point and shoot shots over previous cameras. I stuff an a570 in my geobag or even pocket and try to take time to shoot...glad that if it goes missing it can be replaced for around $100 Also recently I found you can install some opensource software on a chip and get advanced DSLR like function from your Canon point and Shoot (check before you buy a new camera, not all models are supported) http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/CHDK I did this and now can play with features like bracketing, HDR and remote control
  3. Still haven't found what I'm looking for by U2 A Million Miles Away - Smithereens Oh No Not You Again (another micro in a pine tree) - The Rolling Stones Mad Man of Europe - Cheap Trick (my choices are subconsciously jaded by a DNF last night apparently :-)
  4. Hi Cachinator, are you looking for a map with geocache icons on it? similar to this one http://www.geocaching.com/map/default.aspx...;zm=13&mt=m To see a map like this - log on to geocaching.com - on the left click on Hide & Seek a Cache - type in a city name in the by Address field (skentucky NY) and click Go - Then near the top of the page click on Search for caches with Google Maps
  5. Close to what you asked for...this GreaseMonkey script will show you the coords of the center of the google map ...and could have been setup on on your other computer http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/11327
  6. Could be. I've never seen 'em. Nope, says Lock & Lock on the top of the cover
  7. Thanks for this CITO handbook, it will help us make our CITO better! I was wondering what the group thinks about this idea...placing a cache in the area to encourage people to come to the CITO From the FLA handbook: Place and, in your submission for approval, request that the Geocache be published on the day of the CITO event I was thinking of publishing the cache the day AFTER the event...and giving coords to the cache at signin or at the prize drawing if we have one...this way everyone attending the cache could effectively share a FTF? Otherwise I could see some FTF hounds finding the cache but not coming to the CITO? Thoughts? A minor comment, but when we published our event, the reviewer mentioned we should really publish events at least 2 weeks in advance...we were off by a day or two. thanks again
  8. Is this related to the problem where some bugs don't have a "View Map" link even tho they have been logged several times??? Some examples: Fast and Moose Racer (currently in hands has no link) http://www.geocaching.com/track/details.aspx?tracker=TB2JZN1 Wally is an other example (currently in cache) http://www.geocaching.com/track/details.aspx?tracker=TB2K556 And then if you go to the History for the cache Wally is in, it shows zero miles logged (not true of course)
  9. Sorry, lost track of this thread. This must have been a temporary special. I haven't seen these in any other store than Shopko (Have checked Target, Wallyworld and Cub) and I have not seen them back in Shopko since the OP But here is a pic
  10. http://www.amazon.com/Gamma-Plastics-Vittl...1017&sr=8-2 I think this is the type of lid you are talking about. I've seen this in one cache so far...it was actually hanging in a pine tree, much more fun for the group to find than a film canister!! We were like 3TF, Weirdest original contents ever. One item was a new in package hair crimping tool!
  11. Very cool, I want to plant a treasure chest as the final for a pirate themed cache...have the chest, but my plan was to find a rubbermaid or loc n loc tub big enough to hold the chest...figuring no matter where I place it I'll have to protect it from the rain & snow. Are you planning to do that?
  12. Another problem with hitting the Needs Maint button is this attribute tends to not get reset. I've recently noticed some perfectly good hides are not on my hitlist because they are marked as Need Maintenance. A PM to the owner got one reset, but another is owned by someone who hasn't cached in 2 years....Is there a way for someone else to reset the NM attribute? (guess I'll have to change my Pocket Queries)
  13. I agree with this...Add a Nano Classification...searching for a nano seems different than searching for a film canister or altoids or pill bottle... I appreciate caches that callout that they are nanos
  14. Positive reinforcement is a good technique too. I recently got a note from a cache owner mentioning how much she enjoyed our groups logs especially as compared to the typical TFTC (we tend to embellish what really happened, keeps logging fun, but I hope no logs are ever used as evidence in future litigation :-) ), was a nice note to get ! She did have an ulterior motive, this was an infrequently found cache and she was wondering about a particular geocoin...Anyway it taught me that I should really try to look for and log all trackables listed in the cache (this cache was packed with stuff and had 3 or 4 TBs, so we didn't even notice a missing geocoin)
  15. While I'm not convinced the standard Folgers canisters make good cache containers in all situations, I thought I'd mention that you can now buy Folgers Gourmet ground coffee (11 oz) in a Lock n Lock container...should be handy for small size cache containers. Noticed this while shopping at Shopko in Minnesota. Likely a short term promotion. Maybe someone who works for Folgers is a big Geocaching fan :-)
  16. One other note, if you can find a palm TX it has wireless support...could come in handy, if you get stuck you can head to a coffee shop and read the latest logs...or even do some logging tjm
  17. This one is just taking off http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=207416 But I agree, I'd like to hear from people what works well and not so well for TB races thanks
  18. Definitely fun caching in deep snow, have even brought snowshoes on a few caching trips. But, usually try to stick to caches that claim to be winter friendly. It would be great to find even those buried in snow...a metal detector would be great, but bulky for long hikes. I've wondered if a handheld metal detector would work well for geocaching...anyone have any experience? http://www.amazon.com/Shipping-American-Ha...E/dp/B000EVIEEY
  19. Oops, sorry about that, I meant London, England. It looks like a plan has been formed on the United Kingdom category (sorry for double posting, didn't think of that one right away) (GCR57T or GC10NNQ are about 3-4 miles away) Check out that thread here thanks for the help! Happy New Year.
  20. Thanks much everyone. Geocachers are great! London Letterbox & Travel bug xchange was suggested to me earlier by a somewhat local cacher... but as hinted by the sigh above, is currently in a state of disrepair. It looks like Evelinas Children Hospital is nearly as close and easy to find. So she'll have one or possibly two caches to try for and some contact names as a backup plan. Evelinas Children Hospital is empty of trackables. If anyone wants to send some bugs or coins to the US, I suggest dropping them in that cache this weekend. Thanks again! Happy New Year!
  21. Hi MrsB One location is 97 Cromwell Road London, SW7 4DN, United Kingdom Thanks and Merry Christmas and Happy New Year
  22. Hi All, My daughter is heading to London very soon, however she will be GPSr-less. Could anyone point us to a TB hotel she could find /access easily without a GPS? We'd like to drop a bug and see where it goes. I've already contacted one cache owner in the area who has many finds, he was from too far away to help, although we found one cache which happened to be muggled the next day :-( I'm still pretty green in my geocaching, but have seen TB hotels in the US which are pretty much obvious (at truckstops for example) and are protected from muggles by a combo lock ...thought maybe something like that would be available. thanks for any advice

  24. With a little messing around you could do that with GSAK Geocaching Swiss Army Knife http://www.gsak.net/ (I think, have only used this software a tiny bit (hmm, hope this post doesn't violate any forum ettiquette)) From their forum http://gsak.net/board/index.php?showtopic=...amp;#entry61921 costs $25 and pretty much requires you be a premium member
  25. My Nieces and Nephew on their first Geocaching outing earlier this month. My Nephew is normally a video game kind of kid, but he has taken to geocaching...It was a hard choice between this shot and another where he was so focused on the leading us to the cache we almost couldn't keep up to him. Here's to a Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and Happy New Year to all. Hope you can be with your loved ones as well.
