  1. How accurate are the coordinates from the topo maps? Say I’m looking at a topo map and record the coordinates to a valley next to a river. Are they on the money or have a tolerance of plus or minus so much? Planning where to stalk this Saturday bow hunting and was wondering if I could make it to the spot I’m picking from the topo map. Thank you Jay
  2. Found this place while yahooing looking up information on which GPS to buy and where to buy it. From there I had to find out what the heck this cache thing was. Made an account to ask questions about GPS and did a search for caches near my house. To my surprise there were many in my little town. Did a quick look by my self on the way home from work and found nothing. Then after church last Sunday I stopped with 2 of my boys for another look. My son found it. We were amazed and wish we had more time to invest. They are asking me everyday if we can go hunting for them. Thinking of many ways to hide our own and in what places to hide them. This is something we all can do together and do it just about any place from what I see. So we’ll be getting more and more involved. I’m making up a hunters one that I’ll plant deep in the woods and a fishing one that I’ll put out at some waterway. Jay
  3. Candy, breads, or any other processed carbs are only a quick fix and then you come down hard. Want energy from carbs eat natural unprocessed foods. They stay with you longer and are good for you. As for proteins while I’m in the woods, Venison jerky. No fat all meat. NEVER had a protien bar that I wanted to have again.
  4. Thank you. I'll already looked those sites over without much luck.
  5. I did some searching here and hunting the web for CT Topo maps. I’m looking for an alternative to paying a hundred bucks so my feet don’t get wet crossing streams. Since the picture on the Legend when I bought it showed trees I thought that would be what was included as a map. NOT! Major roads are it. I found some sites to make your own but was wondering if I could get one someone else already made or from another source. I’m just interested in CT. Any help? Thank you Jay
  6. I also have a TB etiquette question. What if anything do you leave when taking a TB? I wasn’t prepared when I found my first cache with my boys and it contained a TB. I would have liked to take it and move to another Cache but wasn’t sure what to do so I just logged we found the cache and left everything as is. After seeing this post I’m glad I didn’t take it. Since I would think it would be great to see my TB going over the pond. Make a trip over and back would really be something. Jay
  7. To all you GPS Nuts out there. Thank You. This is not only a great tool that will help me out with many of my outdoor activities. It’s also something new I can share with my children. I had a great time with my boys looking for a Cache and a few Benchmarks. We found them all and had a great time doing it. They started immediately thinking of things to put in a Cache, places to hide one, what to hide them in, and wanting to look for more. My daughter already is getting on my case because the boys got to go find some and she didn’t. So I’m printing out a few more close to home to find with her in between the many activities my kids are already involved in. This seems like it’s going to be a great little hobby. I’ll get to spend more time outdoors and with my kids. We can also add it to just about any thing we go do since this is all over the place. So I just wanted to say THANK YOU to all that have made this possible for us. Jay
  8. Thank for the warm welcome people. I can’t wait to start. And since I fish for Stripers mostly up in and around Stonington, bow hunt in many towns on the west side of the state, and love to float tube while fishing for smallies down the upper Housy I’ll be doing all bordering states. It’s been pouring here forever. Haven’t had a chance to get outside to give this another try. What I meant by “off the mark” is the GPS seems to be off by way too much. The unit states that it’s accurate to12 feet in my yard. Clear view of the sky. I try to track my steps back around the house and down the street or make a few Waypoints and try to get back to them and I’m 100 feet from where I made them. The pointer arrow also seems to be pointing the wrong way. When I switch to the navigation page I can follow my tracks and get to the Waypoints. I’m bringing the unit back to the store at lunchtime and getting it replaced. Even if I have something set wrong I would feel much better knowing no one has had any issues with my NEW unit before I bought it. Airmapper, thanks for trying to shield me from any veteran abuse. LOL No need. If I’m being a dumbass just say so and smack me. I’ll wake up.
  9. Just wanted to say hello before I bomb you all with questions. Just bought my first GPS. A Garmin Legend. I’m having a few issues already. Seems to be off the mark. I am going to play with it tonight when I get home and possibly return it for a new one tomorrow. I found someone else’s info in it and figure it must have been returned for some reason. It would make me feel better knowing I have a brand new one and not a slightly used one. Anyways I live in Middlebury CT. I bike (with motor), fish, hunt, and just about anything else outdoors I find time to do. I have 4 kids. So much for extra time. LOL Right now we have a very good Striper run going on and it’s bow season for deer here in CT. Came out in the wrong spot from the woods a week ago and then had to follow another boat to go fishing in the fog the next day. So a GPS seemed like the thing to get. While looking up some info on them I came across this place. The hiding new and hunting for caches seems very fun. I can’t wait to figure out how to use my new toy to get started. With all my time in the woods I should be able to stash some little goodies. Are there many here from CT? Jay
